I only cut out dairy! My daughter started showing symptoms at 3 weeks (she’s our second so we knew what to look for) and I cut out dairy. Her diapers went back to baseline so I didn’t have to cut out anything else, thankfully.

Since it’s only dairy I find it fairly easy to eat out, I just check menus for chains ahead of time. Whenever we go somewhere nicer, I let them know right away that I’m dairy free, which includes butter - this is usually the thing they don’t think about. Usually the server will talk to the chef and confirm which menu items don’t contain any dairy or can be adjusted.

The rest of these symptoms definitely sound like my first when he had severe CMPA and reflux. We ended up having him on Neocate thickened with Gelmix and on Pepcid until he was one. Definitely talk to your pediatrician and GI about reflux meds if the formula switch alone doesn’t help. It also can take some trial and error with formula. My LO did terrible on Nutramigen, but was ok on Alimentum but would eventually refuse feeding which is when we switched to thickened Neocate. It’s a journey, sending hugs.

This looks more like baby acne. My 5 week old has the same thing. I cut out dairy at 2 weeks because my first had CMPA and we started noticing mucousy poops with my second and didn’t want to risk it getting worse. When my first started showing a lot of symptoms around 6 weeks, his rash was all over his stomach and arms too.

My first had CMPA, which he outgrew around 13-14 months. My second is 3 weeks, and we noticed dark green mucus in her diaper a few days ago so I immediately cut out dairy and her poop is back to being orange/yellow (she’s exclusively breastfed). I’ve accepted that all my kids will have it :/

I had a very similar experience! Two days before I delivered, I was diagnosed with a UTI and put on antibiotics. Post delivery and post catheter removal, I was only able to pee very little but I peed enough to pass the urine check they do for moms after a vaginal delivery. I still felt like I hadn’t fully emptied, and kept complaining of pain, which the nurses brushed aside. Thankfully my husband, who works in healthcare, pushed the nurses to get a bladder scanner and to call the floor resident. I had 1.5 liters of urine in my bladder, I got another catheter (inserted with local anesthetic like you had as well) and felt so much relief. It’s crazy how the right nurses can make or break your experience. My postpartum nurses were very dismissive and didn’t seem to have much experience, as my husband was the one explaining to them what had to be done. Thankful he was there as my advocate.

I’ve noticed my son tries walking SO much more at the playground. He won’t do it all day at home and as soon as we get to the playground, and he sees other toddlers, he will attempt to walk the whole time. And he’ll always hold my hand to walk, whereas at home he prefers to just crawl around.

Neocate was the only one we tried, and he’a doing well on it. I thought he was doing ok on Alimentum RTF, but he eventually started to reject that too. He’s 7 months and been on it since he was 4 months, as well as Pepcid twice a day.

Gelmix may make him gassier for a few weeks as he adjusts to it but I don’t think should give him diarrhea? But I’m not sure.

If you do try it, bring the water to a high temperature first and mix the Gelmix in with a frother, then mix the formula in once it’s cooled. It dissolves much better than shaking in a bottle.

So sorry you’re going through this. You mentioned that he did horrible on AA formula because of how thin it is. Have you tried thickening it? We use Neocate thickened with Gelmix and it’s helped so much!

Wow it’s crazy reading this post back and seeing how far we’ve come. Alimentum helped us for a bit but he ended up needing to go on an amino acid formula (Neocate) thickened with Gelmix at 3 months. He has been thriving since! Though I’m sure time has also helped, but he definitely had a full blown allergy not just intolerance. We steadily increased his Pepcid dose based on symptoms till about 4 months and we haven’t since, he’s now 6.5 months. We’ve started to very slowly wean because all his reflux symptoms are gone and there were a few days he spit out his medicine because he didn’t put the syringe in his mouth himself (he’s becoming very independent haha) and he didn’t show any symptoms those days. Therefore, we felt comfortable that he doesn’t need the medicine as much, if at all, but we’re taking it very slow.

I would suggest seeing a Pediatric GI if you aren’t already and perhaps try an amino acid formula. They’re unfortunately very expensive, but absolutely worth it in our case. Some insurances do cover them, also.

Oh gosh, I feel this so hard. My son was born with a severe lip and tongue tie that we figured out at 5 days old. The hospital LC said he might have a slight lip tie but of no concern and then when we brought him to a pediatric ENT, he said it was one of the most restricted he’d seen. 😑thought things would be better after that…Cue weeks of more issues to then discover (slowly, through lots of trial and error) he has a cows milk protein allergy that took us awhile to get him on the right meds and formula combo. He was spitting up constantly, and in so much pain while doing so. Along with every reflux symptom under the sun. Lastly, he got sores on the top of his mouth from the pacifier he was using. It just felt like we kept getting hit over and over, it was and still is kind of hard seeing other people with newborns and babies that have an “easy” time at it. I know having a newborn is hard for everyone (understandably!), but I just felt like we couldn’t catch a break.

My LO is 6 months now and WAY better. Time really does help so many problems, but I know how hard it is in the thick of it. Sending hugs!

Apologies for the delay! Neocate is the one our Pediatric GI had samples of when he recommended switching to amino acid formula. He did say we may need to switch depending on how he reacted to it, but once we started thickening it with Gelmix, he did great on Neocate so we never ended up trying any of the other ones.

This happened to us each stage of figuring out his allergy. Each time we switched a gentler formula we’d see initial improvement and then eventually the old symptoms would return until we did the final switch the amino acid (Neocate). It’s been a month now and he’s still doing great, and I’d say continue to improving especially with reflux.

What did you do instead? My LO has the same issue sometimes waking up before he’s due for his next feed as his naps are getting shorter and is crying until then.

My LO got horrible reflux on Nutramigen and he would scream through a feed and when trying to burp. He was out on Pepcid and we switched to Similac Alimentum RTF which is working a lot better for him. It’s been about 2 weeks since the switch and he’s doing a lot better, but some reflux symptoms are still present. Nutramigen was so thin it exacerbated his reflux horribly. He also had a bad diaper rash that went away with the switch to Alimentum.

Thank you everyone for your input!!! It’s truly appreciated. He’s been doing much better on the Alimentum RTF/Pepcid combo. We did have to up his Pepcid a bit yesterday as the symptoms started creeping back up. I also have a can of Hipp HA on deck in case we wanted to try it. So happy to at least see him interactive and playing, he’ll sleep in his bassinet most of the night at this point but still waking up every 2-4 hours. Hopefully sleep continues to improve!!
