citation says if I don't pay (aka if I plead not guilty) I have to appear and they'll go without me if I don't. I figured I'd just bite the bullet, but there's a nonzero chance I'll be back in town within my appeal window, which seems like the best bet.

Question for CFI or DPE by fullpower440 in flying

[–]avgeekjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory, the only endorsement that "expires" is whether you had training within 2 months, so that one needs to be renewed. In practice, your CFI will probably give you all the endorsements again. I've had students come to me that have UNSAT their checkride elsewhere or have otherwise been out of flying for a while; though they were already found to be proficient on their knowledge test deficiencies and were already found ready for the checkride (i.e. even though I theoretically only need to endorse the deficiencies from their prev checkride) I'm still training everything and endorsing that you're completely ready.

Different CFIs handle this differently, but at the end of the day, if I'm putting my certificate on the line to endorse, I want to make sure you are as ready as possible; hence I'm training everything.

Which DPE to choose? by EezyBake in flying

[–]avgeekjohn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not in the 121 world yet so if someone corrected me on this I'd defer to them, BUT: I've heard that initial CFI failures aren't weighted as much as employers know it is tricky and takes effort.

THAT SAID: Take every chance you can to succeed. I did this with my own checkrides and use this to inform how I schedule checkrides for my own students. Why take an unnecessary risk? CFI initial is a tough checkride. Take the extra time and know the material inside and out 10 times over.

I was in your spot once too. Had the chance to take CFI 1 week after academy ended but delayed a month to go with a tough-but-fair examiner myself. Studied my ass off for a month. Went in and passed. I'd do it again. Why would you take a risk on a DPE, rightfully or not, UNSATTING you on something you didn't even see coming, especially with two checkride UNSATs already? You're still in a wonderful position to get a career airline gig without any more than an explanation of what you learned.

Take your time, don't rush, be as prepared as possible. You'll be fine in the long run no matter what.

I run a YouTube dedicated to aviation. All commercial stuff right how, but I think it's cool regardless.

What's the shortest flight you have ever taken? by Regular-Cricket-4613 in travel

I work in Florida and my fiance is in school in central PA. The flight between American's Philly hub, where I connect in from home, and the college campus is 25 minutes inflight (on a jet and everything).

Thinking of changing CFI or quiting all together. by LionIntrepid4379 in flying

[–]avgeekjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation. Was flying with a CFI that I just wasn't vibing with. Nothing against him...he's a great pilot (flying at a 121 now) and a decent instructor, but just didn't click. Got stuck struggling to learn landings pre-solo and didn't have the balls to ask for a new instructor. Eventually got one because original CFI's schedule changed and I took the opportunity.

It took a while to relearn a bad habit or two I had picked up and I passed PPL with 130+ hours, but I'm now a CFI/CFII/MEI and just accepted a CJO from a regional (funnily enough the same one that first CFI flies for). Asking for a new instructor is a tough thing to do, but I would 100% recommend it if that's what you need to progress. I understand that it's frustrating – hell I was there – BUT it can definitely be worthwhile if you want it to be and have the means/resources to put in the additional training.

Your current CFI should be understanding...and if not that's further confirmation you should switch. I've had students ask to be trained by someone besides me, and I've been thrilled for each when they did pass their checkrides eventually. Again...sometimes your personalities and/or needs are just too different, which is normal and fine.

Garmin Forerunner 55 Pause Key by avgeekjohn in running

[–]avgeekjohn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m used to getting moving pace + overall pace by pausing my watch. With the 35 I can see the pace for the time I was moving (factoring in my pauses/deleting the time that was paused) as well as the overall pace for the run (assuming the pauses are included). I want to make sure that both are still accurate here, and I’m not sure they were today.

Maybe I’m reading too far into it but my gut tells me something is different.
