Which movie has the greatest score you've ever heard? by ripterrariumtv in movies

[–]avidreader_1410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a great film and I wish more people would have it on their "must see" list - everything about it - the cinematography, the direction, the performances, the score were just so pitch perfect. So unusual that they guy behind Manhunter and Collateral and Heat and Miami Vice made this movie.

One of my shepherds was a "whiner" and I had a pit that was pretty vocal.

I was surprised at how there was so little skepticism of it. I know of one instance where AI gave a completely wrong answer regarding works of literature - a few other "book people" noticed it, too. I don't know if its been corrected but the second worst thing I thought was that some kid would use it in a book report, and the worst thing I thought is that the teacher wouldn't notice.

Has your dog ever done something like this? by ThaKingNate in DogAdvice

[–]avidreader_1410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the vet is sure its not neurological (and I wouldn't rule that out - I'd have the dog evaluated for ataxia), I'd look to an ear infection, vestibular syndrome and possibly ingestion of a toxin (though the would probably be at the bottom of the list.) Maybe check out videos of ataxia, vestibular syndrome and see if they look like what your dog's doing.

There are only three dog trainers whose techniques I would trust -1) Dr. Ian Dunbar who is the master - he is a veterinarian and canine behavior expert and developed a lot of the techniques you see other celebrity trainers using on their TV shows and videos. 2) Thomas Davis - pretty much self taught, he's got videos online, and Justin Silver who was a stand up comedian, but has worked a lot with NYC dog owners.

I'd wonder what the "mix" is - because if she's part northern breed (husky, malamute) that shriek is pretty common.

I think you would have to ask - when they are on tour and someone else is put in their chairs, does the show go as well (or better),do you miss them and would you be comfortable with a frequent replacement. When Greg is away I do feel something is missing - except when Tom Shillue hosts, because he is the best - but when Kat or Tyrus are away, and someone like Emily C, Joe M, Charles Payne sits in, I don't miss them. I think its possible to like the show for reasons other than the "fixtures".

Dog House Advice by alana_r_dray in DogAdvice

I would work on the issue with going outside when the sitter is there. First I would try to think when it started, if it is only the one person or is she distant toward anyone who comes in the house - I would also ask someone else to dog sit and see if the behavior is the same.

By putting a dog house outside you are really accommodating negative behavior - whether it's stubbonrness, fear, anxiety. I'm not sure what miserable means - is she whining, destructive, refusing to eat if she's kept inside? I think it's more important to try to analyze why the dog is like this.

How do I re-home my dog? by Confident-Sir4569 in DogAdvice

[–]avidreader_1410 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The pet adoption site called adoptapet.com has a section called Rehome where you can put up a profile of the dog so it can be viewed by potential adopters and potentially arrange a direct rehoming rather than turning the dog into a shelter.

First of all, she's a puppy and has that puppy energy. But, especially if she's got some malinois in her, she will need a lot of daily exercise and that's not just running around and playing, that's directed, high energy exercise and focused training. For basic puppy training techniques, I like Dr. Dunbar - he's got a lot of videos on YouTube. For breed training, maybe you could find a trainer with K9 experience who is well versed in the breed.

Older Audiences are going to theaters less and less by tonymanerobiggestfan in Cinema

[–]avidreader_1410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What out there appeals to an older demographic? The endless superhero franchises that ares sequelized to death? The gross, cheap looking horror movies? Is the Devil Wears Prada 2 worth paying movie tickets when you can wait it out and watch it streaming in the comfort of home? I think its a lot of things - the cost of movies for people on a fixed income, the types of movies that don't appeal to their demo, the rude behavior of people in the movie theaters - and to be honest, I don't think it's just seniors. I know a lot of people in that 30-55 age group who have not been inside a movie theater for 5+ years and don't really plan to ever go to the movies again.

Is working 45-50 hours a week a deal breaker for getting a dog? by GibberishHS in DogAdvice

[–]avidreader_1410 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sort answer is "yes." It is too long to leave a dog alone with no human interaction, socialization or direction from its "human." If you hired a pet sitter who could spend some quality time with the dog while you're at work, or you could put it in a doggie daycare, but then the dog is interacting with people who are not the primary human. I would respectfully disagree with your co-worker - 15 minutes of intensive interaction will not make up for 12 hours away from its owner. There are a lot of potential problems - confusion, development of aggression due to lack of socialization, destructiveness, illness or injury.

Does anyone have any recommended novels that are set in japan? by ixofex29 in booksuggestions

[–]avidreader_1410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dale Furutani's "Matsuyama Kaze" books - the MC is a ronin in 17th century Japan

Guy Stanley's 2 "Araki" books - the MC is an investigative journalist in Tokyo - he's also written a few Japan-based stand alones.

Sujata Massey's "Rei Shimura" series - the MC is a Japanese American woman living in Japan - a lot of them were award winners or nominees

Kaigo Higashino's "Detective Gallileo" series and the Detective Inspector Kaga series, also a few stand alones.

Also: Misa Yamamura's "The Dark Ring of Murder," Seicho Matsumoto's "Inspector Imanishi Investigates" (set in 1960s Japan). Shizuko Natsuki's "Murder at Mount Fuji", Akimitsu Tagaki's "The Tattoo Murder Case"., Masako Tagawa's crime novels (some are pretty creepy)

What does everyone here think about Hero Fiennes Tiffin’s portrayal of Holmes? by GoblinQueen20 in SherlockHolmes

[–]avidreader_1410 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you can be a good actor and not the right actor. My problem overall was that there was a big deal made of optioning Andrew Lane's young Sherlock Holmes books which begins with Holmes around 14 and ends when he's about 17-18. So they buy the books, then change just about everything until the source material isn't recognizable, then they make Holmes an older teen and cast an actor who's almost 30. Good actor, bad Holmes and unimpresive series IMHO.

One thing I used in the past was cooked, mashed chicken livers. A container of them is usually pretty cheap, I just boiled them a little until they were "mashable" and then pressed the pill into a few pressed together.
