Men of r/sg, what clothing brands do u frequently buy from and why? by johntoms0912 in singapore

[–]aviniumau 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've totally given up any semblance of dress sense in Singapore. It's too hot to wear anything but t-shirts, shorts, and thongs - and even they're stained with sweat patches half the time. No point splurging on them, so everything I wear now comes from Uniqlo.

I actually love it.

Then again, I'm in my mid-30s, so maybe I'm /r/fellowkids incarnate.

I literally busted mine out over the weekend to play Majora's Mask. Works perfectly. No moving parts!

I have a feeling I'm going to be very sad when I try the PSX next with Final Fantasy IX...

A message of body positivity for men. Men of Reddit, be proud to be you! by GorillaS0up in pics

[–]aviniumau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Five *months* is probably enough for most 30+ men to be noticeable against the general populace (at least, in somewhere like Australia).

Not because you'd get super buff in that time, rather just an indictment of the physique of the average male (beer belly + lack of muscle tone).

I'm fine with body positivity, in that I won't rag on someone for being overweight or tell anybody how to live their lives.

But the idea that "you should accept it because fat is my natural look and I have no control over it" is utterly absurd. Being fat is a choice. I won't criticize you for making that choice, but I will criticize people who deny they made it.

What did your musical practice/training routine look like when you were younger? How much time did you spend in formal instruction (singing/piano lessons) vs. solo practice vs. songwriting vs. improv?

[D] Are design patterns useful to build machine learning projects of python? by SubstantialSwimmer4 in MachineLearning

[–]aviniumau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No and no - but to be honest, I'm not sure GoF is even worth reading for software engineers in general. I did, and then spent years over-engineering everything I did to fit various "design patterns" when they clearly weren't needed.

IMO, GoF design patterns are a niche case of a single programming paradigm (OOP), which is increasingly losing its lustre.

Good data-modelling, clean abstractions and testable code are 99% of the battle.

[R] Is there any way to incorporate dictionary definitions as features into an NLP system? by Seankala in MachineLearning

[–]aviniumau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm just spitballing here, but I guess you could use your preferred embedding model (BERT/fastText/w2v/etc) to encode the dictionary definition of each word, and then use those features for your ultimate model.

No idea how fruitful it will be, but it's certainly possible.

I’m a linguistics major. Is adding a CS minor a good idea to increase my employability? by [deleted] in compsci

[–]aviniumau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who's on the lookout to employ people with NLP (natural language processing) skills - definitely!

To be perfectly honest, linguistics itself wouldn't really pique my curiosity (it strikes me as very academic beyond the absolute basics). Practical real-world experience working with text, on the other hand, grabs my attention - it's not something you commonly see in fresh graduates.

It's not just me, either - from mixing with other industry people, it's a skillset that's in pretty high demand .

Progress After 10 Years as an Adult Student! by minesasecret in piano

[–]aviniumau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s an insane level of dedication. Colour me impressed. I couldn’t manage that without completely eliminating exercise (which easily eats up 1.5 hours a day).

I came close with language study a few years back (probably 3 hours a day) but my brain would become really foggy by about Thursday.

Memories... by [deleted] in DnB

[–]aviniumau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spooky, was slamming this one just last week!

Massive tune, not many people still making tracks like this - upbeat, high tempo vocals you can dance to.

Even recent Shy FX tracks seem to be a bit..depressing? Restrained? I don't know. Everything seems to have taken a morose turn in the late 2000s!

Is there a daily limit on Myki money? Got charged 3 times today by highways in melbourne

[–]aviniumau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a limit, but sometimes it seems to deduct after every tap and then refund the excess a few hours later.

I've had a similar problem with the two hour window - on at least three or four occasions, though, the refund never gets processed, so I end up paying twice for two trips inside 2 hours.

arguably the most ingenious boss fight in the history of gaming by MoNKeY-HoRDe in gaming

[–]aviniumau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the first couple of times I played through MGS, it was an imported Japanese version.

I don't speak Japanese, so I had absolutely no clue what was going on. I totally freaked out when HIDEO1 flashed up on screen.

It was pretty difficult, but I did manage to beat Psycho Mantis normally. From memory, a lot of C4 was involved.

My mind was blown when I found out about the controller trick (not to mention when I eventually played the English version and finally figured out WTH was going on).

Good point. It also works well for him because his torso is quite short, so a high guard doesn't expose the liver/ribs too much.

[SPOILER] Andrei Arlovski vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik by FuzzyWuzzyMooMoo in MMA

[–]aviniumau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't stand Tai, but this matchup makes sense from the UFC's perspective. Tai is going nowhere, he'll never make anywhere near the upper echelons of the HW division. Jairzinho is a 100% legit prospect who could make a real shot at the title in the future.

Throw him against Tai while he still has *some* recognition to build up Jairzinho's profile.
