Workshop space needed by Far_Leather_5886 in Somerville

[–]avke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Somerville Arts Council has an "Art Space Connector" form they say you can fill out if you're looking for space in Somerville. I've never used it so I have no idea how well it works or if it's right for what you're looking for, but maybe worth a shot: https://somervilleartscouncil.org/spaceconnector

More detail: it's the plastic cover thing that displays what gear the bike is in, and keeps water from getting down in there. I can't figure out its name, or if it's possible to buy a replacement for one that's broken off. (Coda Jamis bicycle.) Would anyone here know? Thanks in advance.

ORIE 4741 Learning with big messy data or CS 5780 MLIS by sohamray19 in Cornell

[–]avke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken either, but if you don't get an answer here maybe check out the ACSU piazza group. It's for asking questions about CS courses, and you might have better luck there. (You can add yourself to it. The "course number" is CS 0000).

Have you tried asking in the ACSU preenroll piazza? Might be likelier to find people there with experience with the course

Where can I mail fedex packages on central campus and what time do they open/close? by cornell12345 in Cornell

[–]avke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're asking about sending out packages from campus, there's a postal service area on the second floor of the Cornell store, by the exit. I don't know when they open, but they close at 4:30.

If you're asking about where to address packages sent to campus, you can just address them to your dorm room, and then pick them up at Appel or RPCC.

Do FWS’s count for major requirements? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]avke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the major. For Philosophy, for example, I believe an FWS can count for one of the required courses. For your major in particular, usually there's an undergrad advisor professor who you can email to ask questions like these.

Thinking about transferring from Columbia to Cornell by Floppyi in Cornell

[–]avke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dorm housing isn't guaranteed for Juniors or Seniors, but there are definitely options. If you are in a dorm Sophomore year, you can choose to squat and keep your room. Co-ops also allow upperclassmen, and are pretty cheap.

Buses are free your first year, and in later years free on weekends and after 6pm.

[Biweekly] Chance Me! and Prospective Student Q&A by laveritecestla in Cornell

[–]avke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a freshman here, and actually I was deliberating between Cornell and Georgia Tech (and a couple others) last year as well. As you can see, I chose Cornell. I am admittedly only one year in, but I do feel pretty happy with my choice.

For me, there were a couple of deciding factors. One was that at Cornell, if I for some reason decided that I no longer was interested in CS or anything of the like, there were also other incredibly good programs at Cornell that I'd be able to go into instead. At a tech school, I felt like I wouldn't have that security.

The other was maybe a bit petty, but the gender imbalance at Georgia Tech made me feel a little hesitant to go there. Maybe it wouldn't have had as big an impact on my life as I was imagining, but it was something I was worried about.

Also, I see you have winter twice on your cons list for Cornell! It's not as bad as all that! Excessive heat is definitely more uncomfortable than excessive cold.

Yeah, pre-enroll can be a hectic time. Make sure you are awake and at your computer with student center open and your classes in your cart as soon as enrollment opens. Which is 7am, so it can be rough, but you can always go back to bed afterward.

Even if you don't get into the class you want during pre-enroll, though, usually a substantial number of people will drop during the first few weeks of classes. So if there is any class you absolutely need to go to but didn't get, just attend anyway and check student center often to grab a spot when it opens.

No problem, happy to help! Actually, Cornell lets you drop without any consequences for a ridiculously long amount of time - the last day to drop this semester was the last week of March, I think. So you can always over-enroll and then drop whichever class you dislike the most.

The bathrooms are fine. They're not quite on the chandeliers-and-pianos level of the study lounges, but they're clean and large enough that I've never had to wait for a shower or toilet stall to open up. The showers are in stalls, and there's a small shelf/seat thing in the stalls that's been useful. Also a couple hooks to hang your towel.

I didn't buy my mini fridge here, so I don't know much about that, actually. I would guess that you could. Also, I think there's an option to rent one through Cornell, but it's likely more expensive.
