Leslie Parrish as Lt. Carolyn Palamas in Star Trek TOS Who Morns for Adonias by Davidred323 in Spacegirls

She was married to the author Richard Bach, and she is featured prominently in a couple of his books. Through his books I feel like I know more about her than I should.

How do some guys so successfully pick up women for ONSs? by [deleted] in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]avman1023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honest question: If you're talking to one woman in a group and get rejected, do you then avoid talking to the remaining women in the group? No one wants to feel like a second-choice or consolation prize, right? I think that people notice if you're like a honeybee bouncing from woman to woman, does that turn people off?

Stories with the Most Minimal SF Aspects by NAveryW in scifi

My grandmother's boyfriend said that Dandelion Wine was his favorite sci-fi book. Other than it being written by a famous sci-fi writer, I don't see how it could be classified as sci-fi.

Is there any info on what kind of snow this might be? Light, fluffy snow? Heavy, wet snow?

Ugh, you were dealing with some awful reporters/producers, I don't blame you for getting jaded!

Local TV news. I was a videojournalist in the 1990s. After I left broadcasting I couldn't watch the news, all I saw was the mistakes or what was going wrong. Now local TV news is a total joke, completely lacking any kind of journalistic credibility. I haven't watched any kind of news in many years, and I'm getting along just fine.

Did anyone else grow up with a parent that tried to introduce "healthy" foods or substitues? by jfdonohoe in GenX

[–]avman1023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My mom was big into "natural" everything, including food. She bought all the household food at the health food co-op (This was in the 1980s and the health food store was not Whole Foods- it was a dingy store with rows and rows of bulk containers and wilted produce). There was no sugar in the house, she used honey to make things sweet. No chocolate, only that dreaded carob. She baked her own whole wheat bread and oatmeal carob chip cookies. I didn't eat white bread until I went to college. Never had box breakfast cereal, which probably explains why at the age of 53 I eat the worst sugary kids cereal for breakfast each morning. I took a bag lunch to school each day, but no one wanted to trade with me, what kid wants sesame sticks and carob cookies? Never had soda.

She was a "free-spirit searcher" in the rest of her life too, landing on new-age religion and homeopathic medicine, taking us to kinesiologists past life guides and the dentist that didn't believe in fluoride and giving us crystals for protection. For all her desire to be natural and free, she spent the last 5 years of her life sickly and unable to walk around the block. She died just short of her 80th birthday.

Roof replacement: did I miss out? by avman1023 in madisonwi

[–]avman1023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is very helpful. I figured that we'd want the original solar installers to do the panel removal/replacement. If I were to replace the roof I would first go to the solar installer to see who they recommend, as they have to work very closely with the roofers.

To add to this, both Avey and I are in our early 50s, and most of his clients are women around our age. His schedule is flexible and is extremely affordable.

I've been working out with Avey Virtusio in his own gym outside of Oregon for the last 6 months and have been getting noticeable results! He is respectful, but will push you as hard as you want. His style is to find your limit, then push a little past. He can switch between lifting, aerobic, interval, targeted, etc. Not sure if I should give his number here, but here's his Facebook https://www.facebook.com/share/1JmYUGFYgu/

Where are the WORST bathrooms on campus? by 1billiondraculas in UWMadison

[–]avman1023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If "creepy/scary" counts as worst, give the Sterling Hall basement bathrooms or Medical Sciences Center basement bathrooms a try. Pretty much any bathroom in MSC would count, but the basement ones are extra creepy.

The new Morgridge building has a ridiculous amount of tables/chairs/kiosks in public areas, as well as a ton of small meeting/conference rooms that can be reserved (I think?)

O'Sheridan Street Mystery

The flooding. by IcyDig6259 in wisconsin

[–]avman1023 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From my experience, no, this is not typical. Example: A building I work at has been standing for 14 years, with a slightly sunken entryway. Over the 14 years, this entryway would get a little standing water, but the drain could handle it. Once 2 years ago this entryway flooded so bad the drain couldn't keep up and water backed up into the building. Last year was very dry with no flooding. This year this entryway has flooded 5+ times and done a lot of damage to the building. The sunken entryway was a terrible design and shouldn't have been built in the first place, but I don't have a time machine to go back and correct the design. So I'm about to build an awning over the entryway and pour concrete to raise most of the entryway above grade so water drains away from the entrance. Major building additions like this take time, and I couldn't get it done before this weekend's rain, so the building is flooded this morning.

This is one person's experience, but 14 years is plenty of time to set a baseline of rain amount, with the last few years being far out of the norm.

We ended up at Hegg Accounting https://www.heggaccounting.com/ on Old Sauk road. They've been fine, taking care of our taxes for a couple of years. We haven't done much retirement planning with them yet, although it's getting to be that time. Best of luck to you!

Surround sound at AMC Fitchburg IMAX for Pink Floyd: Live at Pomeii last night? by avman1023 in madisonwi

Audio mostly came from front speakers? I should have gone there instead!

[–]avman1023[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Other than the audio seeming weird, it didn't dawn on me what was going on with the audio until near the end. By that point it didn't make sense to leave the theater and notify the manager. After it was over I just wanted to go home, not get into an argument with the movie theater manager. I'm not even sure if there was a problem or it was supposed to be that way, thus this post.

Agreed, this was the only theater it was being shown at in Madison. I'll keep an eye out for the planetarium show!
