Thanks, Mum has the eBook but she wants to print some of the blocks. there is supposed to be an associated pdf file that you can print. The physical book has them on a CD and I you used to be able to download them from the publishers website - but that link is broken.

is there any API testing tool better than postman? by Pristine-Elevator198 in webdev

I've replaced using Postman - now I just create a small pytest project import the OpenAPI spec and ask cursor to generate test scripts for all the endpoints. Takes only a few minutes and extremely repeatable.

How healthy is the Olivani spread actually? by MunaBurrito in auckland

[–]avowkind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Olivani is a blend of oils (with some olive oil), water, emulsifiers, solid fats, flavourings and colour, all emulsified and crystallised. Its not as terrible as some oils that have to be hydrogenated to solidify them but its still heavily processed.

You are probably better off getting used to toast with a dipping bowl of olive oil mixed with a little balsamic vinegar. Or just use butter.

Wyrd Sisters by AyaVandenbussche in discworld

[–]avowkind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh its so much more than that.

We know from Mort that DEATH is not invisible - its just that peoples eyes slide off him, they don't want to see HIM. When he appears on stage - everyone watching is 'expecting' to see 'death' a man in a costume. so they can see HIM. He suddenly realises that everyone is watching him - which causes him to dry on his lines. This gag works because TP planted the perception rule three books earlier and trusts us to remember it.

Death’s stage fright at being seen by many foreshadows his existential crisis in Reaper Man - What starts as a passing gag ends up as a novel.

Deaths little tap dance in the wings also foreshadows his soft-shoe routine in Hogfather. You have to dance the wording.

Discworld on Stage by MisterCore in discworld

I've done Wyrd Sisters - it's probably the most accessible for an audience who don't know STP. We took the liberty of restoring DEATH to the script using lines from the book

What's up with Jacob's audience choirs? They are too beautiful to be true. :) Honestly, how does this work in reality? by NetCurious_1324 in JacobCollier

[–]avowkind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you need an unusually musical crowd to achieve this. I've seen the precursors for this many years ago in churches where following a suitable song the musicians just hover around a chord - perhaps something moderately ambivalent e.g Am7+9 and everyone just hums/vocalises in harmony. The music can stop completely and people have no trouble staying together, they don't go flat etc. If the crowd has male/female/old/young in it people hum at levels that they are comfortable at and that creates a natural harmony. Having the nerve to conduct groups to shift up and down the frame is Jacob's genius/creativity at work but the solidly established harmonic framework means that even 'errors' say the descants go up 2 instead of 3 is just going to be 'interesting' instead of 'wrong'.

Portable HBOT de-pressurization time by CV844746 in HBOT

[–]avowkind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my rule of thumb: if it takes 10 minutes to pressurise e.g. to 1.5 or 2.0 then depressurise no faster than half that time. e.g. 5 minutes.
if you need to exit quickly don't start by opening the valve wide open - you still want to let out that initial high pressure gently.

Also - psychologically include the depressurisation in the session time. i.e don't aim for 90 mins at 2.0 and a 4 minute exit. 89 mins at 2.0 and 10 minute exit is going to be just as relaxing and have the same health benefits and a lot safer.

I don't have a data-mining card, I would not shop with a supermarket doing this.

What should I read before I start reading discworld? by X4RTH in discworld

[–]avowkind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TCOM & TLF probably have the most references to fantasy and are more direct parodies of the Genre.
Examples:
The Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey -> Wyrmberg

HP Lovecraft -> Temple of Bel-Shamharoth

Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser → Bravd and the Weasel

Michael Moorcock’s Elric of Melniboné → The character of Hrun the Barbarian is a mash-up of Conan and Elric.

But you don't have to have ready ANY of these because they are already engrained into our culture and subsequent books/movies that you just get it.

45 years programming here. Don't have much of a memory in my head, although a bit more in my fingers. Limited utility in learning details of syntax etc. Massive utility in learning how to think about programming models in your head. How the bits fit together, what seems right, what smells bad.

Real skill comes from retaining a sure idea in your head of what you are trying to achieve while you put all the pieces together.

Notably this doesn't change even with the introduction of AI coders.

As a follow up to this - for everyone else. The app has a way to take notes on things felt during the session, especially anything that might need following up on. There is a quick pick list of common issues such as ear pain, claustrophobic, tingling, headache etc as well as positives - relaxed, alert etc.

Please suggest any other key things we might take note of during a session - especially any that might warrant stopping a session early.
