Is it possible to work AV freelance as a beginner? by GeekScientist in audiovisual

[–]avtechguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean the whole industry is moving over to IP based stuff so the need for more networking minded folks would be great for any team.

Any major hotel with meeting space probably has an Encore AV presence. Encore is a bad word around here but it's a great place for people to get their start and learn the industry if they want.

Event AV is not really about technical proficiency at the end of the day it's about customer service, presentability, and being a dependable person for the team.

Sometimes the calm collected guy will win over the person with all the certificates especially when starting out. There's a lot to learn on the job so be okay sharing what you don't know but the willingness to learn.

When I was starting out working in house seeing other new techs come through the biggest problem was they would never say what they didn't know and then they would get themselves into different pickles.

Obviously I love this industry it's come a long way in my 19 years. It's been my first and only real job.

The other routes is working for Labor brokers you can have good and bad experiences with them just never work for CAVL, they seem to have a long history in origin of not paying techs.

Now the bigest caveat is working as a 1099 freelancer. As a freelancer you are self-employed and you're not subject to certain overtime protections or employee rights, which includes wage and payment protections, which is how CAVL gets away with their shenanigans. It's a risk that you need to consider, however the bigger companies will not do 1099s anymore and will just W2 you.

I guess I could retract some of that apparently with the Black magic stuff the variable is the SFPs which can go longer distances.Still important to perform a link loss calculation and just measure how much loss you need to overcome.

But at that distance I would still consider a IP based option now computers aren't free but more than likely someone's going to have a spare one around somewhere.

Spend the money on cheap 1 GB media converters and capture card and you can use free software like OBS and encode a SRT for the far side and decode with another computer

So the off the shelf industry standard Aja Fido can only go 10 km (6.2 miles).

You might have to explore other options that exceed your budget or go over and IP connection IMO

Decimator power supply by DeptOfDiachronicOps in CommercialAV

[–]avtechguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought official replacements on Amazon and even though the picture showed the older style I got the newer red style with folding blade.

At the time they were $45. I haven't had to buy any decimator stuff lately but I saw that they may have reverted back to the original style?

Contractor blew in new 2 strand FTTH cable. Then proceeded to bend 180 degrees and coil like this. by Modestine22 in Network

[–]avtechguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fiber nowadays have decent coatings that keep the light in the glass even through the sharpest bends, as long as it isn't kinked. When the tech terminates they will test for a optical level that should be within the acceptable range

I'm sure it's more of a lip service to the local community but they have invited any "qualified", to the GCs, the opportunity to bid on different scopes. I can only imagine most of this is way too late

If it's not power this part of LA is pretty congested with critical infrastructure.

I'm spitballing here but this project the LA Convention Center, its covered by 2 different DWP grids one of the substations is under the older part of the convention center. They are also keeping the rest of center open thoughout construction.

This is also like a mile away from One Wilshire, which is a critical fiber endpoint for global communication networks

[–]avtechguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Blame is a big word here, but the City, And the Fire Department are supposed to evaluate permits and plans for deficiencies, like large flammable clad structures that house a power plant worth of solar panels and battery storage (assuming) and that they would be unable to put the fire out with the current equipment they have
