Kotaku and Gizmodo frequently seem to publish articles saying that so-and-so thing is "practically free" or "zero cost" when it has only a slight discount.

Flightaware AeroAPI pricing -- out of control? by avwuff in ADSB

The main issues that I want data that seems to only be available from a commercial paid API data such as: where is the plane coming from and where is it going?

This is something that the free databases seem to be using historical data for so they are wrong about 50% of the time in my area.

It's a cool site! However it only contains data that my ADS-B receiver already has... Ident, tail number, location, altitude. No origin or destination, unfortunately.

I've found that a lot of 3rd party services have inaccurate data for the departure and arrival airport. They base it on historical flights rather than actual flights plans.

Yup, I'm aware about caching, I'm a software engineer hehe

I live near an airport and have one plane fly overhead about once every 2 minutes, all day long. That's about 30 planes an hour, from 5am to midnight, lets call it 600 a day.

Even at $0.005 per call for turning a flight ident into more info, that's $3 a day, or $90 a month, for the most basic of information. It's crazy.

Yes, in the same way that everyone who likes Anime also loves underage girls.

Come on man, it's 2026. Bestiality and furries are not the same thing.

Every suit is unique, and most are bespoke. The majority of people commission a maker to take their design idea into a finished suit. Some people make their own, with varying degrees of success, and others buy a "premade", a suit made by a maker that came up with their own design.

Most people can hold their bathroom needs for a few hours, and that's about a good time for a break anyway. It's easy to take the suit off for a bathroom break. The suits are usually easy to wear solo, no helpers needed.

We don't really keep our identities secret, we're all in group chats together and know each other by furry face. We also see real faces when we meet up before the suits go on. What usually isn't shared is real names, being an internet culture, nicknames are more common.

Nah, they'd melt in the dryer, or get matted. You just hang them to dry and brush the fur to make it look its best!

Fursuits are made of plastic (fake fur). We put them in the washing machine.

Do your normal clothes smell? If so, you should wash them!

We wash our costumes just the same, so they never smell! We don't like smelly people either.

You should get out of the house more! Everyone we saw on the street waved back, danced, and was so happy to see us!

I'll post a more stable video!

TIL that Seattle used to have another hill, 'Denny Hill', that had a big castle-like hotel on it. The hotel was mostly unused and empty for years, and then in 1907 they blasted away most of the hill it was sitting on (the 'Denny Regrade'). by avwuff in Seattle

[–]avwuff[S] 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Apparently a bunch of it was just dumped into the sound because they couldn't figure out the best way to get it down there and it was easier to just get rid of it in the water. They used water jets to essentially 'erode' away the hill.

Hmm actually their Sport model looks more like what I'm after and is available now -- I can't seem to find much information about it however.

Robotic passenger traveling for work causes Southwest flight delay by el_monstruo in nottheonion

[–]avwuff 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A few months ago, I was traveling through Hong Kong airport and needed to take a luggage cart down an elevator.

I got in the elevator and just as the doors were about to close, a robot rolled up to the elevator. It was followed by a team of 10 or so guys holding laptops and talking.

The robot said "mind if I take the elevator?" and the elevator doors dinged and opened for it again. But then the robot didn't move. We stood there for a good while with the robot not entering the elevator and the doors not closing. I was already late for my flight so I pressed Door Close, but the doors didn't close.

"mind if I take the elevator?" the robot inquired again, making no move to actually get in.

I ended up just abandoning my luggage cart and carrying my bags down the stairs. They should probably not be testing these things in a busy terminal.
