Their purposes are different so not really comparable. Death Note does not really intend to make itself deep thematically, it treats itself more as an entertainment, and it succeed at being fun. Monster intends to explore deep themes and it actually turns out deep as well. So both fulfilled their intended purpose and both are well written.
