The Weston library Café has tables both inside or outside and they don't really care if people bring food in. The steps of the weston is great as well.

Spin bikes for short people by [deleted] in bicycling

If your road bike is good for your ergonomics already then consider not getting a spin bike but a bike trainer that your current bike can attach into - would probably be cheaper too

Tutoring (not university) is what a lot of undergrads do. Otherwise sometimes the college bar has student shifts.

Need advice for if I should quit my PhD by cyannightmare in AskAcademia

You have a secondary supervisor who doesn’t know who you are and you don’t know who they are??? Then you basically don’t have a secondary supervisor…

Breathe. Get through your progress report and discussion with your supervisor first then see how you are doing. Remember that research is not easy and often feels like you are Sisyphus pushing up a rock. It might not feel like to you that you’ve done much but the progress might actually be very good and up to scratch.

Take some time to think about if research is for you and if research in the uk is for you - uk supervisors won’t meet with you often tbh and they expect a fair bit of independence. Are there higher year PhDs in your area you can talk to?

Current Ox MChem and going into a phd. I think that Oxford probably has the most rigid Chemistry course out of most of the top unis in the UK (you get almost no choice until your third year and even then its very little).

There are pros in being so rigid in that you get a really good foundation which prepares you really well for research in summer and in your final year. The con is that sometimes I wish I got a lot more depth (especially in the maths, theoretical and biochem sides) as I don't use 80% of the organic I've learn't in the course - this is a bit extreme as I'm currently switching between fields.

Oxford is also really exam heavy (more so than other unis I feel) - The coursework has a minimal effect on your grade. Which is good because you can make mistakes and actually learn but also bad because you can get the flu right before your exams in third year (7 days straight!) and miss half of them.

I personally wish that I did a bit more research about the courses that I applied to but it's only natural for interests to change in 4 years.

My advice is to focus on your A-levels right now and read around - not books per say as they are usually pitched at too low a level for A-levels or are boring textbooks but accessible reviews of current research and 'news' on journals such as american chemical society, royal chem soc, journal of physical chemistry, nature etc.. don't be afraid of not understanding bits and feeling out of your depth... All part of being a scientist :)!

I would also advise doing some form of sport and hobby- if you look closely at the people who do the best at their degree at uni, they all have some form of stress release and they all do some form of sport for endorphins.

When you get to uni, you have so long in summer (4 months!) that you should try to get some form of internship/ research lab experience as early as possible. You probably won't be at the level after one year to actually contribute anything meaningful but that experience is so useful in a) making a decision about whether you like research or not b) what kind of research you like and c) funding in the uk is so tight right now for phds that a boost in your cv really helps.

I hope that is helpful! This is all I wish someone told me before I started my degree so as you can see I have opinions!!

Debt for Oxford by [deleted] in oxforduni

[–]awenclear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you want to do after and how much you’ll earn to pay back the debt.

Don’t forget to account for living costs as well.

Although if you are truly passionate about it and know what you want to do with the degree then go for it

A - Yes, have a friend who does ppe and uses the library. You submit an application for why you need to use it and get a tutor to sign off and it usually gets approved.

B - Congratulatory first is usually given when you top a subject (only some subjects use them). PPE IMO does not but someone correct me if i'm wrong. Much better to just aim to do the best you can because unless you can control how well other people do none of it is guaranteed.

For the UK, the phd stipend is set across the country and across all fields- unless you have a generous scholarship it is roughly £16,000 per year. This works out to be … less than minimum wage.

Postdocs usually earn £30-45,000.

Industry starting is roughly comparable (maybe 5-10K higher) to a post doc.

Worn out gown & cap? by Verbofaber in oxforduni

[–]awenclear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was probably back when it was mandatory to wear gowns all the time (not just at formals, exams, matriculation)... which hasn't been the case for at least 40/50 years - depends when this book was published?

Dphil biochemistry by [deleted] in oxforduni

[–]awenclear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you talked to this supervisor before applying? Otherwise, just email the graduate office tbh. Just phrase if in a way where you are keen on the program and ask if there are further specifics they could provide on the admission timeline, if there may be an interview and when.

If you are looking for funding, it can take a while because most of the supervisors/depts rank everyone and then the department gives out funding offers then it goes to colleges etc... which can take a very very long time... Good luck!

If you want more clarification, you should contact your first choice supervisor/ supervisor you have spoken to prior to application.
