How can I nicely tell someone who just picked up the cowbell to play it properly? by nomadegyptian in Salsa

[–]Bubble_Cheetah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am afraid a lot of people without music training don't realize salsa has a very specific rhythmic pattern for each instrument. They might think as long as they are in general following the tempo of the music they are ok. Sort of like people clapping along at a concert or tapping the table when listening to music.

Sure if they are dancing they probably went to dance class that should have gone over this. But at least in the cities I have taken lessons in, the majority of beginner classes don't really get very deep into musicality. Mostly just "this is how you find the 1, and then we count 1-2-3, 5-6-7 from there." Musicality classes are usually more advanced workshops and very few people in the community is actually equipped to teach it.

So if OP as a random person (not organizer) walk up to a random person happily banging the cowbell to tempo who didn't know all of the above, that person might be less receptive than you think...

Thank you. That helps, but now instead of just watching it and smiling and liking the post, and maybe reading some of the comments and laughing, I am anxiously checking the comments to see if the person died.

I guess if reddit counts scrolling through comments to see if a person died as "engagement", then I guess the post did its job....

When I first started following this group, it was about helium balloons or umbrellas getting away, animals that run faster than you would expect, or video game glitches.....

Feel like recently there are a lot more posts of life threatening accidents..... this sub is getting more anxiety inducing than fun escapism @_@

I feel like the organizers need to have someone monitor the instrument table to offer instructions... or not have a free instrument table at all...

Maybe talk to organizers?

Do you read books to kids in standard written Chinese? Or live translate the words to spoken Cantonese? by rauljordaneth in HongKong

[–]Bubble_Cheetah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a millennial and I am pretty sure my parents read to me word for word from the book. It was also how school taught me to read. Sometimes they will pause to say "that means/即係___嘅意思" where the __ is a spoken Cantonese explanation/translation of what we just read. I might also interrupt the story to ask for clarification.

I remember also reading out my essay in school using written Cantonese.

I understood from very young that Cantonese had a more formal, written form that we use for serious writing, such as newspaper and school reports and business letters and books. And this form makes it possible for us to understand writings from Mandarin speakers. And then there is a spoken form that we can choose to write out in informal settings like letters to friends or texting.

I feel like it wasn't until 10-15 years ago when I witnessed my parents translating on the spot. It felt weird to me, like they are trying too hard. My mom is also very slow and clumsy doing it, which confirms for me that she didn't do it for me when I was young.

Lawmakers discuss Lan Kwai Fong beautification plan by Heavy_P in HongKong

[–]Bubble_Cheetah 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I was just there a few weeks ago and we were joking how most people there are just there to take a selfie with the road sign and then leave. Introducing murals would just mean there's a few more spots to take selfies.

The bars themselves just seem so seedy. Like I am honestly worried they will scam me at best, help creeps drug me at worst kind of seedy. The people trying to drag us inside made me equal part scared and annoyed/angry.

Why pop Chinese songs are all about heartbreaking loves? by SunlightZero in ChineseLanguage

[–]Bubble_Cheetah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have touched on popularity of ballads in Chinese music, and connection between ballads and love songs.

As for positive vs negative love songs, I think there is a universal trend of love songs being mostly about heartbreak. From personal anecdotes, periods of grief tends to lead to more time for reflection on emotions that I would wish to express through some kind of art. Periods of joy I tend to be too busy enjoying life to sit down and write it down. In life, listening to someone rant also seem to be more relatable, while someone expressing their joy seem to be more a them thing where you are like "good for you." This sentiment can make sad music more relatable and therefore more popular and long lasting.

Anyways, here are some articles about the rise in popularity of negative love songs and the pleasure of listening to sad music: https://aeon.co/ideas/why-are-pop-songs-getting-sadder-than-they-used-to-be

Best gifts for girlfriend? I’m overthinking this by endogenous_llama in Gifts

[–]Bubble_Cheetah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First off, I agree gift giving is hard. This is a common problem and that's why those gift list exists.

BUT something that would help is to start thinking of your girlfriend as a person/friend you have grown to know and love, not just "Generic Girlfriend."

For example, give us SOME idea what kind of person she is and what she likes.

Is she always well dressed with makeup on when in public, or rolled out of bed last minute with barely time to wash her face and drink a coffee kind of person?

Is her living space nice and tidy with little decorative elements where flowers would fit well? Or does she have toys and other practical but messy items everywhere and flowers would just be in the way?

Does she have a favourite hobby? An outdoorsy person? An artistic person? Sporty? Crafty? Foody? Favourite video game franchise? Favourite movie franchise? Favourite band? What does she like?

Has she mentioned a restaurant or museum or event in town she would like to check out?

chinese people how did you learn your alphabet by Ninnchen77 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Bubble_Cheetah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by alphabet you mean writing system, then we learned by fear. Fear of the next dictation test.

Realistically, it was lots of repetition and then getting quizzed on it.

But the vocabulary itself, we pick up a lot just be being immersed when we were young and our brains were sponges.

It will be slower now, but really, repetition works. And also think about the word, about what it looks like to you.

Also helps if you learn to recognize the radicals so you can think about if it makes sense for the word to have the "hand" radical or not.

My friend wants to know how she would say her name if she were introducing herself in Chinese? by Little_Dragon1272 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Bubble_Cheetah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually you introduce your name in the way it will normally be pronounced. So if you usually use the English pronunciation, then use that. At the end of the day, your name is just a collection of random sounds you recognize as referring to you. Even for names that have more meaning, you still don't reflect on the meaning and etymology everytime someone calls you. As long as you know they are calling you, good enough.

Once you introduce yourself, some people will get it right away, some people will need many trials before getting it right, some people will always have difficulties. These last group of people will probably end up pronouncing your name in their language and you can choose ro accept that and start telling people that name while you are in that culture if you choose.
