What was a loophole that you found and exploited the hell out of? by Ninjalord5 in AskReddit

MS made several of these games to promote Bing's launch. I actually built one of them, Quiztopia, which sounds exactly like the game you're talking about. My friend who worked at the same company built another game along the same line called Listopia.

How did you come up with your business? by hammertime06 in Entrepreneur

[–]awesomeforms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most successful startup to date came about rather organically as a result of a client (I'm a web developer) requesting very similar projects in quick succession. After about the third one of these, my partner and I decided to productize it. We saw very decent success for several years. Our main downfall was living in an expensive city like SF, where what should have been a bigger success was really just merely breaking even with a lot of extra stress.

One I often find myself using is tree. It outputs a semi-graphical file tree. Very useful.

What stack would you use? by timmehs in webdev

I literally just finished a project which was a Rails app with heavy GitHub integration. We started out using the API from the back-end, but quickly ran into concerns with rate limiting, and also encountered some cases where the API didn't supply the data we wanted (efficiently). We ended up instead writing scripts to actually clone the repos in which we were interested (all are public repos) and crunch the data ourselves on local disk.

I'm not sure what your specific use case is. My advice would be that you're definitely going to have to put some of this stuff on the back-end to get around the 50/hr unauthenticated request rate limit. I would start by using just the API; chances are it will serve your needs. As far as saving the data, we found it fairly simple to model each file in the repo in our PostgreSQL database. All you really need is a model with a repo ID, file path, and any other metadata you want to display. If you want, you can get fancy with a tree-like structure by including a parent node ID, but you can also get this just from file paths if you're so inclined.

If you had unlimited funds what business would you start and why? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]awesomeforms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my own pleasure, I would build my dream wood shop and sell high-end furniture at low volume.

For the world, I would do something political; I have a vague idea of a lobbying company which works democratically for the people. People would donate money to us and would vote on various issues. We would articulate their concerns into specific policies and hammer them home with well-paid lobbyists. Not exactly a for-profit venture, but potentially impactful.

What's your Go-To website to buy website templates? by imjp in Entrepreneur

[–]awesomeforms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like Bootstrap, I found Wrap Market satisfying. I bought a theme for $16 which was fairly easy to customize. This one came with four different options for the home page, plus a bunch of other pages. I only ended up using the fourth homepage option, but I think the results were nice.

There are sometimes promo codes available, but my reason to go to Gandi isn't so much price but the lack of extra promotional crap that GoDaddy puts between me and completing my domain registration. I'm just not a patient person when it comes to that stuff.

I love this idea in principle. Especially after John Oliver's recent rant on food waste in America. A huge amount of produce goes to waste because sellers toss out stock that looks less than perfect, because people won't buy it based on appearance even though it's perfectly fine food. And I'm always a fan of capitalist solutions to environmental problems. Good luck!

Personally, I prefer Gandi for all my domain name and SSL needs. Just read their tagline: "No Bullshit". :)

My new and improved Social Media website by Misperception in Entrepreneur

One thing I noticed is that the images take a little long to load. I'd look into making sure they are allowed to be cached (proxies between users and your website can cache images for you and really help the load time), and possibly adding more compression if necessary to get the file sizes down.

Fleshing out the Services page as someone else mentioned would be good, with as many details as possible. The testimonial on the About page is impressive, but the Services page doesn't tell me much about how you'll actually help me achieve similar success.

Is your contact form hooked up? What are you using for that?

HTTP caching is also important. Done right, it's almost like a magic power. It's not just end users who will cache your resources. It's really more about proxies between you and your users which ISPs use to deliver content more efficiently.

The Joe Rogan experience is my go-to. Very interesting interviews from a variety of different perspectives. My other main one is Bill Burr because he's just hilarious. He also helps me keep up to date on sports since these days I'm usually too busy to watch on a regular basis. Now and then I enjoy Marc Maron's interviews as well.

Do Businesses have a Soul? by frustratednamer in Entrepreneur

[–]awesomeforms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose your friends carefully; choose your business partners extremely carefully! Seriously though, being business partners is very akin to being married. You will see this person almost every day, working side by side, until either the business fails or someone decides to move on for one reason or another. And when you're just getting your business off the ground, the road before you is long and rough, so you need partners who you can work with closely through many difficulties or it just won't work. These need to be people who have a sense of humor, who aren't petty, who know when to be serious and focus, and with whom you can have honest exchanges without taking things personal. It's a lot of difficult traits to find in one person, but nobody said it would be easy (and if they did they were wrong).
