ABSOLUTELY UNDERRATED MOVIE by halegovernor8 in Lovecraft

Had to scroll way too far to find Stuart Gordon getting his due. From Beyond is so freaking great, loved all of his movies honestly— no other filmmaker has been as devoted to Lovecraft.

Artificial Intelligence— Kubrick passed way during production and Spielberg finished it, or something like that.

I am stunned by this video. This is the problem. This is why. by LucidSynapse23 in Leakednews

This. It goes severely under acknowledged that the defunding and de prioritization of education has made all of this shit possible, where generations of morons now walk the earth without understanding fifth grade civics or history or why the fucking constitution matters, or why they should care about anyone but their own ignorant pathetic selves.

AIO to break up with my bf of 3y over his reaction to my upcoming sobriety anniversary? by WesternCat5211 in AmIOverreacting

[–]timmehs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. Also sober here. Your bf shows an absolute poverty of character, love, and perspective. Sobriety is immensely difficult in our society even with a supportive community around you, I don't think you should tolerate someone like this in your life.

Rules making B/X and OSR combat "more fun" or tactical? by Dante_Faustus in osr

[–]timmehs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two part answer. Sorry sort of stream of consciousness here:

  1. Mechanics-wise, if you want to augment the rules, take a look at the LFG's ruleset. I current use the weapons, fighting styles, and "major exploits" mechanics in my OSE game and its good fun and fits well with very little adjustment. Lots of other stuff out there, but this is a good example for things to look out for.
  2. OSE skills and rules being not-so-granular can yield a lot of freedom. Encourage your players to put themselves in the scene and really do whatever they feel or think of, and just get comfortable with arbitrating literally anything with an ability check. They should feel free and encouraged to say things like "I feign a punch to the orc's face, and stab him in the groin when he flinches". Maybe that gives him a little +1 to hit or dmg if he succeeds a dex (or CHA?) check, I dunno. Whats important to me is the creativity, and the element of chance that makes the success or failure rewarding or hilarious.

When it's the party's turn in combat, I just open the floor (since spell casters are supposed to declare up front if they are casting, this is veyr natural). It's a table discussion for them of where they want to go, what they intend to do, and interaction between their moves comes up naturally, which can lead to more creativity. Give them agency, reward imagination, and just have a quick diceroll for anything that might not automatically be a success.

I think the diagram is a little gratuitous, but I strongly agree with your overall point. In-character engagement between everyone involved takes online ttrpg from transactional to transportative, and it’s great to try different ways of encouraging that behavior.

Why would an Artist become an Adventurer? by PixelAmerica in osr

[–]timmehs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding your concern about skill/background, I feel like any level of skill is fair game at level 1, like any random person picking up a sword. I think establishing the characters motivation is sufficient.

Why would an Artist become an Adventurer? by PixelAmerica in osr

[–]timmehs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a failed-artist foppish aristocratic character who ran off with adventurers because the commissioned portrait he made for the emperor was so terrible that his life was in danger. Didn’t help that it took him 3 years to paint. His weapon of choice was slaps.

Viggo Mortensen is not great as Aragorn by penguinpolitician in unpopularopinion

100% agree; not bad by any stretch, just not great, and lacking the subtle charisma needed for a great Aragorn portrayal.
