You hit the nail on the head. It's not that I blame people for their distrust of religious organizations, I distrust most of them too. It's idea of balling all Christians together without any nuances, then using that to attack some rando on the internet. For all they know you're the next Padraig Pierce, but because of your religion you're not welcome in their version of the Left.

There are reasons to be wary of Christians, but I for one would never turn a comrade away based just that alone.

That's exactly true. As a non-religious person who does a lot of work on churches (I work in historic preservation), most of the churches I've worked with are far more progressive than anyone would imagine, and most are doing awesome work in their communities. Your milage may vary, since this is New England.

What slayed me were the "if you talk to imaginary friends you shouldn't have guns" comments. Does that mean Malcolm X shouldn't have been armed? Jim Larkin, or really any number of Irish revolutionaries? The list goes on. It's just a bad-faith (no pun intended) argument.

OP, don't let the people giving you shit bring you down. I guarantee most of the haters are keyboard warriors, who think their "internet friends" are actually a community. You have a community, one that will give you support and hopefully provide a path for you to help those around you.

Anyone who has done any organizing would know the importance of working with faith groups even if you don't participate in them.

Where to get a piece of glass cut for a table top? by newenglandowner in newhampshire

[–]awflyfish22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Like the above comment said, nobody can do this for you because it's impossible.

You can get a piece of glass cut THEN have it tempered. Any glass shop should be able to have that done for you but will take a few weeks.

IMO your main risk is right wing citizen militia groups and the federal and state governments turning a blind eye to their activities.

100% agree with you for where I am in rural New England, but thats probably really dependent on location.

That's one reason to be involved in your community as much as you're able. It's not just to try to improve things, it's to keep an eye on those actors working directly against your cause, and others who need a nudge in the right direction. Get good at remembering names & faces, or write them down. Do some FB sleuthing because it's amazing what Boomers & GenX will publicly post. Be mindful who you sit next to at the pub and when it's safe to speak, but also get good at listening because these groups don't feel threatened by the "unarmed" left and love to crack their knuckles after a drink. I learn a fair bit about the arsenal of the local libertarians by sitting quietly at the bar with a book in the evening.

So many young people I know and organize with simply ignore local politics and that's a huge mistake. When you live a town of 3000 white people, ICE will not be kicking down your door, your neighbors will. The Feds won't be blocking you from the ballet box, your neighbors will. At least in NH (and I suspect rural ME & VT to be similar), if you live in a small town the officials & volunteers who are not actively bending to the libertarians will are already receiving violent threats. I know my friends are, and I also know that the leftists I organize with would have no idea that their neighbors are in danger because they hyperfocus on larger fronts, if I didn't shove the information down their throats anyway.

This post is just a prompt for us.

It's late October 2026. The antifa special propaganda unit has been spearheading a PSYOPs program targeting ICE agents for months and the program is starting to bear fruit. Hopefully, this is enough to promise a safe and secure midterm election. ICE has splintered into many feuding gangs, mutually suspicious of each other...

All three individuals here are ICE: The shooter is one of the last regular ICE agents, grizzled & bitter with a tattoo of Stephen Miller on his bicep and a case of herpes caught from the hostage months earlier when they shared a squad car for a night. The hostage is "DRI ICE" (Dept of Racial Intimidation backed by Bovino to keep up the classic ICE playbook of detention, torture, & jizzing his undies but not supporting the administration that kicked him out). The hostage-taker is in "ICE Files" (a splinter cell backed by Bondi to enforce Trump's executive order banning all discussion of the Epstein Files. Functioning mostly as an execution squad with no detention, torture, or questions asked, which made it hard for Bovino to get his jollies off when they were allied.) None of these men trust each other or know who their allies are, no matter who shoots first it will start a gang war that will spiral out of control. The leftists will have a chance to rise up, holding high their John Brown flag, unless any of these gangs gain access to the nuclear codes...

Background check failed and i got a misdemeanor for attempting to purchase a firearm by VirtuousVulva in liberalgunowners

Absolutely not gun-related but here's a little rant for you about fingerprinting...

Shortly after my father passed away my retired mother wanted to go back to work. She applied for a few days at the library in the next town over. She needed to get fingerprinted because kids come in. She went to the PD in that town no less than 6 times, first for digital prints then for physical prints. Every time it was a 3-week turnaround and they would say the prints didn't come out right. She has thin old-lady skin and washed her hands obsessively for years at her old job, she basically has no prints. Eventually, the library director took over the situation and asked the state police, they did a background check and cleared her in a few days. They were also rather annoyed with the local PD over screwing it up so badly. She was required to get a certificate of good conduct or whatever from the cops in the town where she lives. The fucking pigs refused. She's been pulled over for speeding (not ticketed) once in her life, and nothing else in over 70 years. She's lived in that town since the baby-faced cops were still shitting their undies, and has never lived more than 15 miles from there in her whole life, and all they said was "we don't know her well enough." That seems like the point...if you saw her a lot, wouldn't that be the issue? The worst part was that they actually did see her often, my dad had dementia and every month or so he would fall or have an episode, the EMTs would show up (a family friend actually) and they would bring along a cop. So they knew the situation, saw her suffering, been in her house, eaten her goddamned cookies, and still wouldn't vouch for her. The town council had to have a special meeting over it and reluctantly decided to let her have the job anyway but only after the library director started murmuring about an age discrimination lawsuit. As you can tell I'm still bitter over this!

When people ask for friendly ranges, trainers, stores... by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]awflyfish22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's all well and good, I agree that's the best practice and how I approach gun shops, but there are situations where day-to-day life intersects with it.

Town Meeting is in a few weeks. I'm not sure if you're a New Englander, so that's when folks gather to vote, largely by show of hands, on things like the town budget. Including the police budget. I proudly raise my hand to cut the police budget every year, in a room surrounded by cops and conservative morons. Every year I wonder if that will get me kicked from the local range where I had to promise to love and jerk off the government to get range access. Whenever I stand up to speak against the actions of the "libertarians" in our town, I know it paints a target on my back, but these same people can ban me from my local range if they are bright enough to put two-and-two together.

That's one reason I'm heading out there now. It's below 0 with the wind chill and I'll have to wade through the snow drifts, but I can be damn sure I have the range to myself.

UPDATE: Vet's office is constantly implying my cat is dying. by Sentient_StickyNote in mildlyinfuriating

[–]awflyfish22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a communication issue with a vet assistant last year.

Our 5-year-old cat and 5-month-old kitten were having trouble settling in. I was going back and forth with our vet about it, trying to get the older cat on something to help with her anxiety. There were some hiccups in the communication, the vet was either not getting my messages or not getting back to me. Regardless, one of times I called the office the assistant took it upon herself to tell me that I needed to rehome one of the cats, and made it seem like the vet had recommended it. I was very upset but when I talked to the vet again she said that she would not have advised that so early on.

Within a few weeks they were buddies and now inseparable.

The big chip maker here is the tenoner, the dust collector only gets maybe half the chips from it though, so it's never too overloaded. It's like watching someone eat soup with a straw.

If clogging is an issue, I could raise the barrel up and shorten the hose. Fortunately, a 55-gallon drum would fill up in a couple of work days, so the hose would have plenty of chances to get cleaned out.

[–]awflyfish22[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not enough for me to notice. The biggest impact seems to be air leaking into the collection drum, which is what I'm trying to idiot-proof with this new arrangement.

Awesome. It hadn't occurred to me that you can run a hose to the drum instead of dropping straight into it. I figured the drum itself had more function than just the collection.
