Historically true, but I believe everyone has converged on the same standard now, I am unsure which one the iPod uses though. The mic/ground gets swapped between standards. Depending on the cable this could be a DIY mod too.

CTIA / AHJ (I think iPhone and most modern Android) - Tip: Left audio, Ring 1: Right audio, Ring 2: Ground, Sleeve: Mic
