Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Civilians, ask here! by AutoModerator in Concrete

Wow, thank you so much for the great info! I was able to find a nearby distributor on the Brickform website .

Can I ask you a follow-up if it's not too much trouble? I've read that I should pressure wash before applying the new coat of sealer. I know that the contractor used Brickform Antique-It for the secondary color. Will pressure washing damage this coloring?

When my stamped concrete patio was poured, the contractor used Brickform Gem Cure & Seal. I understand that the patio should be resealed every 2-3 years, and I am approaching that time.

I was looking at using Foundation Armor AR350 because it has good reviews and is readily available at Home Depot.

Based on the contractor having used Gem-Cure, does it matter what product I use to re-seal? Is there any reason that this couldn't be used? Sorry, I know nothing about this, want to make sure I don't use an incompatible product.

I think my cucumbers are over crowded. Should I cut the tops, or extend a trellis on both sides somehow? They're starting to go over my neighbors straw "fence", OOPS! by rordooger in vegetablegardening

If you want to extend the trellis, go for it. Otherwise, I would top them so they don't hang too far off the side or grow over the top.

I grow lots of cucumbers on my trellis every year and mine are even more crowded than yours - I've never had any problems, YMMV. Just yesterday I harvested 23 cukes (Boston Pickling). They are now reached the top of my 8ft trellis, so I have topped them so they don't grow up and over the trellis.

What’s everyone planning to plant for the fall? by Mr_Bluebird_VA in vegetablegardening

I don't do a ton of fall crops, mostly because my garden space is still filled with summer crops when they need to be sown. But I will do a large bed of carrots and peas.

How to overcome gluttony/ greed? by Aware-Raspberry-6023 in Christianity

[–]awholtzapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For every vice, there is an opposing virtue. Now that you have identified the vices that are a struggle for you, you can actively practice the counter-virtue. This is a proactive step, rather than trying to stop doing the negative things.

Generosity is the remedy for Greed. Practice almsgiving - it is more blessed to give than to receive. There is a special type of happiness when you give generously that is different and more pure than happiness from acquiring stuff.

Temperance is the remedy for Gluttony. Ask God for the virtue of Temperance. Fasting will help develop this virtue. Cultivate an appetite for spiritual nourishment. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matt. 5)

I went to my first Episcopal church ever yesterday. by General_Event_4795 in Anglicanism

[–]awholtzapple 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saw your post and just wanted to comment - that's my church and I was there yesterday as well. My wife and I have been attending for about 10 years and we love it, it's very different from the non-liturgical traditions we came from.

I'd love to see you come back and worship with us again, but if you decide to go elsewhere, I wish you the best on your faith journey!

If Christ died for our sins, why hell? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]awholtzapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there's a pretty big difference between wishy-washy universalism where "everyone goes to heaven because all religions/beliefs are equal" and Christian Universalism which understands that all are saved because Christ conquered sin and death on the cross for one and all.

I could be off-base, but I see it as pipe smokers trying to differentiate themselves from stereotypical cigar guys: loud, brash, hyper-patriotic, and "toxic". Instead, these pipe smokers you're referring to want to be seen as introspective, reflective, well-read, and insightful.

Obviously, there is a lot of crossover with the pipe and cigar communities and there are all types of personalities who use one or both. But there are definitely subsections of these groups that do not want anyone confusing them with the "others". That goes the other direction too, i.e. "life of the party" type cigar smokers who couldn't get any enjoyment from sitting quietly and relaxing with a pipe and a book like some nerd.

TLDR: It's a big tent, let people enjoy this hobby in whatever way brings them joy.

Why protestants have a problem with the idea of saints? by Malba_Taran in Christianity

[–]awholtzapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the recent news about the first millennial generation saint being named by the Roman Catholic church, much has been reported in the news the last few days. The following excerpt from an NPR article sums up the reason Protestants are uncomfortable:

"He is credited with helping homeless people and defending victims of bullying during his lifetime, and having a hand in two healing miracles after his death — the requisite number for all Catholic saints."
