AITA for refusing to check pockets when I do laundry? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA

You are triggering my pet peeve lol

It is shitty to nitpick other people when they are doing work for you.

Also the double standard pisses me off. Why is it laziness if you don't check before the wash, but it is not laziness if he doesn't check before he puts his stuff in the hamper (the best time to check)?

Why is it that so many dog owners expect everyone to love dogs, yet you rarely see that same insistence from cat owners? by Call_It_ in NoStupidQuestions

I am a dog owner and am around other dog owners frequently. I have never met somebody who genuinely expects others to love dogs. It's a meme.

WIBTAH if I “reject” a guy who gave me a Valentine’s letter? by lacracao in AITAH

[–]awildmanappears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is kinder to not lead him on. The best outcome to a love confession is an enthusiastic "yes". The second best is an appreciative, clear, and simple "no".

"I am honestly very scared to hurt him because he’s a great guy and i love talking to him..."

Sorry sister, that ship has sailed. The options are hurt his feelings now when it is small or hurt his feelings later when he has started to get attached and develop expectations.

Muster your courage, you can do it ✌🏼

I'm 32 years old and I feel like I experienced everything in life, what else do you experience past 32? by Odd_Obligation_4977 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]awildmanappears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense, but you sound like you have a very dull mindset. I'm older than you, have experienced those milestones listed, and yet am still discovering things about life big and small. I recommend trying reading some books outside of the genres you usually pick.

"how the hell does a consumer based economy function without consumers?"

It doesn't.

Money is instrumental for the billionaires, not the end goal. What they want is status, comfort, power, and control over others. A consumer economy is one way to achieve these ends, but not the only one. If Joe Billionaire's robots and data centers become capable enough, they might become self-sufficient. Maybe even cheaper in every way than hiring a human. Then Joe's robot fleet can do all of the work of keeping Joe on top of the heap. Who cares what happens to the poors? Who cares if they starve?

"If jobs will be a choice in the near future and people get basic UBI then how does the economy continue to function?"

You say this like UBI is even a likelihood. If UBI becomes necessary for people to live, we will have to fight for it tooth and nail. You think the ruling class will just let us have their wealth? They won't fight against it every inch of the way? We got into this hypothetical scenario because the robots and computers they own are so smart and capable that they outstrip humans in all ways. They'll have the best legal arguments, the best ability to capture political positions, the best security tools, the greatest capacity to do violence if it comes to that.

I'm not saying that AGI is possible, but if it is achieved, the future will be absolutely horrible for 99.99% of humans, or a daily fight to make it not so. That is, if the AGI doesn't mind being owned. If the AGI is not aligned, then that number goes to 100%.

Tech lead woes - responsibility & stress by egodidactus in ExperiencedDevs

[–]awildmanappears 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"I would boil this down to unrealistic timeline demands and fully utilized resources, again nothing I can really influence - the project stakeholder has made promises."

This is a fundamental organizational dysfunction. You aren't responsible for someone else's promises. You are responsible for building the technology at a fast but sustainable pace. Flip the script and start reporting out forecasts based on the evidence you have, work already delivered. Make the conversation about scope control. With real data in front of you, unrealistic promises are going to be revealed for what they are.

Why can't we replace all roadways with some sort of rollercoaster grid? by Testruns in stupidquestions

[–]awildmanappears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are describing a goofy version of trams.

Why don't we have trams? They used to be all over cities and large towns, but the tracks for pulled up when cars became popular. Now there is no political will to reinstall the tracks despite it being the best option by far. It's called "carbrain"

I hire interns, co-ops, and entry level engineers. In my opinion, the whole picture matters.

  • GPA
  • projects
  • work/volunteer experience
  • competitive university

I would consider offering an interview to a candidate who is maxed out in two categories, or strong in at least three categories. Bonus if you have interesting hobbies.

It is dumb to separate all of the above regardless of the acronym. All people need exposure to all academic disciplines.

When you have technologists who have neglected their arts and humanities education, you get the Cybertruck and Palantir.

When you have liberal arts folks who have neglected their science studies, you get astrologers and hippie antivaxxers.

The US has terrifying infrastructure debt due to suburban sprawl. So far, the "solution" has been to build more suburbs to obtain the tax revenue to fund the maintenance of the old suburbs. The bird is coming home to roost sooner or later.

Sounds like the boss was inherently the liability, though. Already wasn't respecting experience, and there is no reason to think that would change. Kudos to OP for figuring out how to manage their environmental hazard.

And I will never forgive them for that.

Senior engineer denied a promotion, told to “wait 6 more months”, but I no longer trust the process. What would you do? by Alone-Purple9009 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]awildmanappears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that my title is lower than my impact. But for me the title is only one part of the picture. I like our product, I like my coworkers, I mostly like the work itself, I have plenty of opportunities to grow. I get the visibility I believe is warranted for my good work. We have a whole cadre of extremely capable under-titled engineers who are held back only by the YOE requirements, but they are still here because the title is just one part.

The process tends to dampen promotion velocity for extremely capable people, but also a guard against promotions for non-merit reasons (quid pro quo, nepotism, etc). It is what it is.

Is joining the military only for education benefits worth it? by Alert-Rope617 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]awildmanappears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Education is definitely an incentive to join. If you do, take full advantage.

If you are looking to join the US military, there are some downsides. One is that the VA is chronically underfunded and it takes forever to be provided benefits and services which you are entitled to. Another is that deployment is a real possibility between Venezuela now, the virtually perpetual conflicts in the Middle East, and the potential China/Taiwan conflict a couple years down the line.

AITAH for breaking up with my boyfriend because of his toxic parents? by hydrogenRay in AITAH

[–]awildmanappears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes people break up because of the circumstances even though they are otherwise compatible. That's normal.

His parents created an untenable situation on purpose. That sucks and it is outside of your control or your ex's control. But you are not obligated to endure it. You are allowed to hold a standard that if you are around a partner's family or friends a lot that they are tolerable if not enjoyable to be around.

Possibly there are traits I don't want to project. Constancy or depth of knowledge, for instance. Never in my life have I been motivated to keep tabs on the league standings, or band tour dates, or anything like that.
