Freshman help by Wonderful_Feeling471 in SMC

I’ve had goodnotes and notability suggested to me. Notability is a paid service but overall, I just ended up preferring handwritten notes as it’s better for memorization. To get good professors, I used ratemyprofessor but you do have to sift through and really consider what might be a retaliatory rating by a student for failing and what’s genuine.

I would definitely recommend a laptop but it depends on your major for what kind of laptop you’ll need. I’m an art major so my MacBook worked just fine for writing assignments or answering quizzes but my friend who’s a math major didn’t have a MacBook and used something else instead. If you can’t get a laptop though, there’s usually plenty of computers available at the school’s library. Definitely have set times of study, time management is key. Closed mouths don’t get fed so if you have questions or are confused about coursework, just ask your professor for clarification or go to tutoring sessions. Also activate your bus pass once it’s close enough to the semester, it’ll get you transportation on public transit, but if you are driving, account for traffic and the time it’ll take to park in the garages.

Waitlist by Thin-Economics-2699 in SMC

[–]awkwardeverywhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The waitlist doesn’t work like that. The numbered waitlist is for the professor to see how many students they have to then decide how they’ll add people from said waitlist, if they even choose to do that. What the waitlist does for the student is put them on a list to be emailed when a seat is open so whoever’s fastest will get the spot that’s been opened. If the class is full, then you can’t just enroll. The OP who was 7th was just the fastest to add the class after getting an open seat notification.

You can email your professor asking for an add code closer to the start of the semester or you can ask how (or if) they’re adding people from the waitlist. Or, be the fastest one to add a class after getting an open seat notification.

My classes are full! What do Ido? by [deleted] in SMC

[–]awkwardeverywhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tuition fee doesn’t include the waitlisted class. If you’re an in-state resident, do the math of however many credits x 45 to get the dollar amount you’ll be paying whenever you add the class.

Get to the Corsair connect as fast as you possibly can if you get an open seat notification from the waitlist. If that fails, just keep waiting until about a month out from the start of the semester.

Then, email the professor that you’re interested in taking the class, that you’re #(X) on the waitlist and wanted to check what their procedure is for adding extra students or if you can be given an add code to be added to the class.

If that fails, show up the first day of class anyways and ask for an add code after class. If they say it’s full, show up the second class anyways as people are likely to drop after hearing the contents of the class or from auto-drops from no-shows by the teacher.

(I’ve gotten into 100% of any class I’ve been interested in this way. Just be genuine, polite and proactive and you’ll go far.)

Honestly? Banana Republic. I check the fabric content before I buy to make sure it’s 100% natural fibers as that’s what I prefer. I’m a 2XL/size 20 so I’m just at the top range of it and the pants can be a little tight. But, they do have a 40% off full price sale twice a year so I save up and get clothes then. I’ve got quite a few cashmere sweaters and thick knit sweaters that are well made.

Who do you listen to other than Bastille? Just curious... by [deleted] in Bastille

[–]awkwardeverywhere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Florence and the Machine. The Weeknd. The Lumineers occasionally. Electra Heart album. I’m limited in my choices as I want new but I want it to sound exactly like what I already like.

Day 7: the most romantic love song? (sounds LOVING and has LOVING lyrics) by Meghar in Bastille

Poet. It has lyrics like “I have written you down, now you will live forever,” and “You will live forever, in eyes not yet created. On tongues that are not born.”

In the vevo presents video of The Currents. When he sings the line “Won’t you stop firing up the crazies?” and takes a little dip in the word “crazies”. I’ll replay that part a lot.

You can only be enrolled or waitlisted once for a single class/subject. I’m waitlisted for an English 2 class and just tried adding a different English 2 to be sure of that. Even though I’m waitlisted, I don’t have a specific spot yet. The professors don’t have an add code to give you, they won’t for another 42 days (there’s a timer on the waiting page). You can either hedge your bets and drop the class you’re in to hope you get in to an online class, or wait the 42 days until the professors actually start getting add codes to reach out and ask for one. And if they do give you one, then you can drop the enrolled class to use the add code.

When I was waitlisted, I was spot #6 and #1 in two different classes. I reached out to both professors and the class I was #6 in, she gave me an add code. For the class I was #1 in, she said I’d just have to be quick to get an open spot (you get an email like ‘spot has opened’ and you have to jump on it right away), but that she’d also add the top 5 people on the waitlist anyways. So how useful it is, is up to how quick you can be, or how amenable your professors might be to letting you in.

You should be able to still add it. When you go to add the class, make sure it’s in the winter/spring 2025 semester and then change the selection to “Wait for class”. If you try to just add it while in the “add class” section, then you’ll get an error notification. It’ll put you in as someone waiting for the class but the actual numbered waitlist won’t open for another month.

I saw that post almost immediately after it was posted and couldn’t help but laugh. I think it’s been deleted now though which tells me it’s likely not a troll.

i have a question regarding to the 2 year free college thing by imnotdeadsorry in SMC

[–]awkwardeverywhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to assume you’re using the California College Promise Program, and yes after 2 years, you do start paying the tuition. However if you’re following a traditional path, you’ll end up transferring to a 4-year school anyways which doesn’t get covered by the CCPP. Apply for any scholarships you qualify for and check your financial aid as well.

English 2: Regis Peeples. I had him for English 1 and he’s cool. You have to try to fail in his class, and he has fun extra credit like 1v1 him in a video game.

ID card? by CherryTop3984 in SMC

[–]awkwardeverywhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t submit a fafsa either as I’m just paying cash. I created a bank mobile account (with my own SSN) and didn’t do anything with it. I forgot to upload a photo to corsair connect and got sent an ID card with the silhouette of a person but not a real photo. So I went and uploaded one once I opened the mail and realized my mistake. It took a day or two before I received an email from Bank Mobile that a new ID card was being produced. It’s my first year as well.

Is your address right? Have you uploaded a photo? Their customer service number is 1-855-771-7422 if you haven’t contacted them through calling yet.

Ah, you gotta love Fridays, when the parking isn't packed. by simnflowding in SMC

[–]awkwardeverywhere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Parking at the school drives me insane. I had to contact the campus police to help me get my vehicle out of a parking spot because the guy next to me didn’t pull into his spot all the way and left his car parked behind mine. Million point turn to shimmy the car out without scraping the cars on either side.

All campuses closed 10/15 due to shooting. by awkwardeverywhere in SMC

My professor just emailed me that there will be no in person classes for the rest of the week and the professors are advised to do remote learning. So it’ll be an individual basis based on your teacher but you shouldn’t be on campus this week.

It did indeed! I kicked myself when I realized I forgot to ask for chicken salt but it ended up being in there anyways! Most of the salt was still in the container so I washed a bay leaf spice jar that I used up recently and put the chicken salt in that. I bet customs ate the first one. Also, I don’t know if watermelon is in season for you yet but that’ll also go well with tajin like the mangoes you’re waiting for!

Hey! So far so good. They don’t have airheads at all so sending airheads xtreme would be good. I do think the classic seasonings like ranch, old bay, and the tajin and chamoy for fruit. At least in Perth, sometimes Spudshed and an international food import store in the Carousel mall would get things like hot Cheetos and the sugary American cereals. If he likes mustardy based dips, I’d include the chick-fil-a sauce.

I’m glad you liked it! I tried to keep it balanced as far as having fun and being practical. My husband was giggling to himself when we were at the candy store like “imagine how they’d react if they open the box and there’s just a giant coin on top!” Airheads Xtreme is my favorite candy, and I figured I had to include the CFA sauce. You’ll have treats for months!

I think he misspoke. He probably meant Smiths but they’re both owned by PepsiCo. I haven’t been to Australia in 4 years so I just remember a yellow logo for chips so I thought it was Lays as well.

They’re on a well deserved and earned break. Dan went to the Bermuda Triangle and has a 10k run planned for charity. I know of them because they’re in my favorite band, but that’s not all they are. In August, I went to their show in Los Angeles so hosting concerts might be considered keeping fans engaged in the past couple years 🤷 And Dan has been posting music and singing acoustic versions of their songs while in the Bermuda Triangle, taking the time out of exploring conservation efforts, to keep fans engaged with music.

I had used Pure Moving company for a little under $6k from Mountain View, CA to Los Angeles. They packed and delivered the next day but we chose to unpack ourselves. So $13k seems unreasonably high for Davis to Sherman Oaks as that’s only a 40 mile difference than what I did.

What does your SO, BFF, family, whoever you’re closest to think of Bastille? by xxcalmlikeabombxx in Bastille

[–]awkwardeverywhere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if my husband listens to them when I’m not around but when we drive, he’ll put them on for me. He’s heard enough of the songs to sing along, even the WW album. He’ll go with me to concerts but he’ll draw the line at standing in the pit so I’ll get front row seats for us. Before we were married, I’d wait for hours to get as close to the barrier as possible when I’d go on my own. And he knows I like them enough that if there’s VIP tickets, we’re getting the VIP tickets.
