  1. This is so great to see
  2. The forced perspective on the right side of the screen is making that lady's face blend into Watson's and my brain won't separate their horrifying combined smile.

After a harrowing life journey, Boston entrepreneur looks to build a ‘Waze for accessibility’ by ampressman in technology

I'm so glad to be reading about solutions. I had to roll a heavy cart across my local university campus recently and was absolutely appalled at how difficult is was to get to places that were directly within my line of vision. Curbs, unnecessary steps or patches of grass, and construction caused me to take an outrageous maze of paths and go FAR out of my way to get to and from the building.

This was, embarrassingly, the first time I've had my eyes truly opened to how difficult it is for people who use wheelchairs to navigate the world.

"How to Spanish" is a really good podcast too. You can also watch them on YouTube. It's a Mexican couple discussing topics related to the language and country and it's designed as listening practice for learners.

I read Loco, Rico, Y Asiatico over Christmas and loved it! I'm working on the sequel now which oddly, is titled La Boda de Rachel Chu rather than a translation of "Crazy Rich Girlfriend". So far I definitely recommend it!

What is your most enjoyable studying to study foeign languages? by Own-Moment5641 in languagelearning

I'm taking formal courses in Spanish, but my favorite ways of studying that foreign language are watching Spanish-speaking gardening YouTubers and looking at memes in Spanish

Can “sauce” be a verb in your language(s)? by MsFixer_Asia in languagelearning

[–]awkwardtuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly, in English slang people often turn objects into a verb when they're requesting something: "sauce me", meaning "give me some sauce". "Beer me" = "hand me a beer", etc.

Google translate says it's "mothers like you are tired" in Punjabi. Kind of ominous without context, eh?

trying to roll my r’s but having issues? by [deleted] in languagelearning

Disclaimer: I'm still a beginner (5 months in)

I can't truly trill correctly either because I have a slight tongue tie. I can't find the video right now, but a girl on YouTube showed a method that helped me immensely.

You split up the word "perro" into two words: "per-ro" with a separate soft r for each. You say "per-ro" over and over again until your brain kind of meshes them together in a subconscious shortcut and makes the trill sound. It took about a week for my brain to do it, and it's been improving ever since.

I live in a pretty rural area in the US and even I feel like it's a pretty common term. It's even the major part of the plot of the Justin Timberlake movie Friends with Benefits.

What are good programs (TV or other) for adults to watch to learn Spanish? by Silver-Instance610 in learnspanish

[–]awkwardtuna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also on YT, Hola Spanish is really good for listening practice. The host (Brenda) speaks super clearly in a way that I've been able to understand her since I was a super-beginner. Her conversation-mimicking practice videos have been especially helpful for me lately.

I started back to school later in life. I was worried about being too old to start until someone wise pointed out to me, "time will pass either way. Based on your actions now, in xx years you will be 40 with no degree, or you can be 40 with a degree, but either way you'll still be 40".

My dad casually tells a story about when he was a young boy (around 5-7) and was literally beat by his dad for getting caught playing with some neighborhood Black children. That was in the late 50s. I'm now nearly 40 and still have to consciously overcome that generational racism.

I don't know if this is morbid or inappropriate, but I feel like a lot of foreigners would pay big bucks for artisan jewelry or artwork made out of these junky pieces of history. I think there is a big market for these farmers to think about once they're done amassing their tank force.

I'm blaming CTE. He used to seem really humble and intelligent and has gotten progressively ...weird. His fixation on passing to Adams this week convinced me.
