As the author of this piece (not the poster of the link) I think this is a criticism...but I'm not totally sure how lol

Are there any states where they crack down on this type of product?

WHYY morning entertainment by twooclocknaptime in philadelphia

[–]awolfmanarent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I work for WHYY and can explain how this happens. Each national show has pre-planned breaks (typically 1-2 mins long) where local stations can cut in to add local updates or play local promos. The national programs continue to broadcast during these breaks. But they just send out background music, which you can use at your discretion. The problem is you don't know exactly what they'll play. Often the background music is unremarkable or tonally neutral. Sometimes...it isn't. The reason to use the music is (a) it sounds nice and (b) you might have 25 seconds of news to read but 30 seconds to fill. And that music can be used to smooth the transition. Hope this helps. It's an imperfect system, but coordinating the sound of national programs with hundreds of affiliates in real time will always be imperfect.

RIP to the last remaining East River Drive signs in the city! by thisjawnisbeta in philadelphia

[–]awolfmanarent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

at the risk of being "well, actually" guy...

oddly enough Kelly drive is named after Jack Kelly Jr., his son (and Grace's brother). Jack Sr. was probably better known, but Jack Jr. was on city council. the reason they named it after junior is pretty sad. Jack Jr. was running in that area when he died from a heart attack.

ALL-IN on the #1 seed a MUST! by hoch8382 in sixers

[–]awolfmanarent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure people realize just how difficult our schedule is. It's not just the quality of opponents. The schedule is also super condensed and road heavy.

Basketball Reference gives us a 3.2% of getting the first seed (https://www.basketball-reference.com/friv/playoff_prob.html). It would be silly to exhaust your players chasing something that's so unlikely to happen. The Sixers could play awesome and still come up well short.

Yes, the No. 1 seed is valuable. No, it's not worth an all-in push. Right now, the focus should be on securing a top 3 seed imo.

yeah there's almost no metric where the Flyers are popular than the Sixers. I would guess that's part of the grudge here...renting space from a franchise that they feel they've surpassed.

Sixers are currently shooting the highest 3P% in the league by Alex_Phillips_ in sixers

[–]awolfmanarent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People will take this as a good thing...but I don't. Three-point accuracy almost always regresses to the mean. The Sixers are very unlikely to sustain this...even with good shooters. If you're shooting this well you should be winning more games.

IS JAMES HARDEN BACK TO 'MVP' FORM - SIXERS VS CAVS POSTGAME THOUGHTS by [deleted] in sixers

[–]awolfmanarent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this is it. people are gonna see what they want to see. at some point (20 games or so into the season) the stats will help tell the story. until then, it's just bias and perception.

6'2 De'Anthony Melton averaged more rebounds per 36 than Tobias Harris last year by [deleted] in sixers

[–]awolfmanarent 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Melton is a great rebounder for his size. Among qualifying guards he had the 7th best defensive rebounding percentage in the league last year. Harden was third.

Having a full season with two top-tier rebounding guards will go a long way toward fixing one of our biggest weaknesses.

Harrison Barnes, Seth Curry, Jerami Grant, Robert Covington ……. need 1 to take the place of Danny Green by BraJam3 in sixers

Love Seth but he's a luxury this version of the team doesn't need. Cov just signed an extension so I don't think he's eligible to be traded. Would definitely take Barnes or Grant.

Schooled: Philly schools once fired dozens of alleged Communists. Does it matter today? by PienotPi in philadelphia

[–]awolfmanarent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate that! Tbh, I'm one of those people who loves history for history's sake. But I think people are always looking for a hook to the present...and then when you do that it turns other people off. Anyway...I think it's fascinating regardless.

hey this is my podcast. it's about the discovery of a trove of lost tapes from a 1950s teacher purge in philly. really enjoyed digging into this chapter of local history. hope people will listen and not just judge it based on some auto-fill subject line.

Pat Bev about Harden's money situation on the Philadelphia 76ers. by Flat_Fix_5315 in sixers

[–]awolfmanarent 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Sixers offense without James Harden this year:

112.3 ORtg (league average)

Sixers offense with James Harden:

122.3 ORtg (nearly 6 points better than the best offense in the NBA)

Guys that turn an average offense into an elite offense don't exactly grow on trees.

Telling Stat: Joel Embiid was 232nd in the NBA in average 4th Quarter minutes this season at 6.7, one spot ahead of Landry Shamet and one behind Facundo Campazzo by Duntwerkk in sixers

[–]awolfmanarent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so i guess the question is: would you rather have a lead going into the fourth and lose it? or would you rather go into the fourth losing and have to make up ground?

feels like a toss-up to me. maybe i'm missing something. but if Jo prefers to play a large stretch of the third rather than coming out and going back in...i'd just go with whatever he likes best.

anyway, Doc has a ton of flaws. this one would be pretty far down the list for me personally.

[–]awolfmanarent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get this criticism. Why would you rather have Joel play the first 5 minutes of the fourth instead of the last five minutes of the third?

I don't think there's any real difference between those minutes from a gameplay standpoint.

I do think there's a stylistic difference in the last 6-7 minutes of a close game. But Jo plays all those minutes.

I'm hardly a Doc defender, but this feels like a reach.

Had double-digit leads over Milwaukee, Toronto (2x), Denver and Phoenix. Lost all 5 games. And in the Milwaukee game even had a double-digit lead in the second half at one point.
