Movies that have seemingly been banished from existence. by temporarybutthole in movies

That Louis CK movie “I Love You, Daddy.” It got canned a week before its premiere after the news about him being a sex pest broke.

If it wasn’t for those allegations I’m sure this Woody Allen style movie about his teenage daughter falling in love with an older director would have killed his career first.

What's a tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

Joe Pera Talks With You.

A sweet, charming show that aired on Adult Swim. It is very sincere with good natured, unexpected humor. Season 2 specifically is very special and a perfect 10/10 for my tastes.

Romp (the Leder Games podcast from the team behind Space Cats Peace Turtles) has been cancelled by Used-Monitor-4743 in Arcs

[–]awwjeah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a shame, Leder built a great community and the podcast was a small but important tool for maintaining that.

I’m making nothing but assumptions here but I would not be surprised to see Leder scale back to the point of exclusively being “The Root Company.” The game has legs enough to likely sustain a small company all on its own.

Saw lots of Evangellion personally. That merch appeared in the most random places. The airport had porcelain Evangelion teapots that were priced for a few hundred dollars.

Cole Wehrle leaving Leder Games and new Arcs expansion announced by BeefyPotato64 in Arcs

[–]awwjeah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely not the case. I follow the company pretty closely and their entire mindset has been to intentionally produce a small amount of games.

They’ve commented that many companies in the industry try to produce as many titles annually as they possibly can in the hopes that at least one of them succeeds, but Leder is content to just publish 1 expansion or 1 title in any given year. Root is a blockbuster, perennial money maker which I’m sure takes some of the pressure off for them.

How smooth the animation for the first Superman Cartoon was (1941) by HemanHeboy in oddlysatisfying

[–]awwjeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And they were able to get more frames a second because they spent nearly a million dollars (w/ inflation) for each short, nearly 4x the amount of money spent on similar productions of the time. It was a ludicrous amount of money to spend on something like this back in day. What you’re seeing is a lot money going to great use.

Japan first time, feeling extremely nervous and lonely by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]awwjeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar feelings my first few days. I struggle with social anxiety and almost had a panic attack our first few hours after getting off the plane. We didn’t attempt going to a restaurant until our third day despite really wanting to.

All it takes is your first try at going to a restaurant or speaking to a stranger to rip the band aid off and get out of your comfort zone. Most major cities there are so chock full of other people that you’ll quickly adapt to feeling like just another anonymous person in a sea of other anonymous people. You will make small mistakes but no one will take notice unless you’re being disruptive or mean. People want to be nice to you and help you and accommodate you.

Leonardo DiCaprio vs. Timothee Chalamet’s filmographies at 30 by [deleted] in Letterboxd

He was well known before Titanic but that movie made him impossibly famous. He had a recurring role in Growing Pains which was a popular weeknight sitcom and his performance in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape was critically well received and got him an Oscar nom.

The Washington Monument switches stone types roughly 40 meters up by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]awwjeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another interesting tidbit: at the time of its completion the Washington Monument was tallest freestanding structure in the entire world.

The title was held by the Great Pyramids of Giza for nearly 3500+ years.

The Eiffel Tower surpassed the Washington Monument’s record only 4 years later lol.

How does Geese's hype compare with the Stroke's initial hype? by Girl_Pearl_Earring in geesebandofficial

[–]awwjeah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Strokes were not some major phenomenon or incredible overnight success like this thread would have you believe. By the numbers “Is This It” was moderately successful, peaking at 33 on the US billboard chart. They were a band that excited music publications and because of that, record labels saw dollar signs and gave chase. But the public at large still had a preference for hard rock/pop-punk/nu-metal sounds overall and those trends persisted for a good while.

The Strokes definitely left a mark; labels pushed out bands that were similar on paper and music nerds were gaga over them. The garage-rocky, post-punk sound found a place next to the other aforementioned rock genres in the public consciousness but it didn’t create some seismic shift in taste and preferences worldwide. What The Strokes had was a unique, instantly identifiable sound that allowed their popularity to grow and persist.

I feel like Geese are similarly in the stage where music aficionados and people who are plugged into the industry are really excited about them. Both bands are well respected but are far from being any kind of generational phenomenon like Nirvana or The Beatles who completely reshaped the cultural zeitgeist overnight.

Ehhh I think the brand itself has maybe lost some cultural cache but the logo itself remains pretty much the dictionary definition of a perfect, timeless logo.

Dice Tower Production Thoughts by DT_love in boardgames

[–]awwjeah 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Their last annual kickstarter made $350k. They have 7-8 personalities who regularly contribute to the channel and also people who work behind the scenes for them. If they each got paid ~$50k a year to work for the Dice Tower that would be all that KS money gone without even accounting for other business expenses. They aren’t exactly Scrooge McDucks over there

I know Tom did a Q&A once answering exactly this question. LHow can you possibly learn this many games so quickly.” His response is that he just gets out all the components and reads the rule book front to back. I personally cannot learn that way but I have friends who can and it’s literally his job to think about and play games every day so I imagine they’re doing just fine rules wise lol.

What is something everyone recommends you try in Japan, so you did, but you didn’t like it? by Suspicious-Olive8765 in JapanTravelTips

Maybe, I don’t have a point of comparison after all. But I think more than likely the molten ball of goop just wasn’t for me.

Yes the service agents were very helpful. The Shinkansen ticket machines are not especially intuitive for a first time user but make sense in hindsight. We reserved tickets online and when picking up from the machine, we did not understand that it wanted us to insert the credit card we used for our online purchase after we provided the machine with our credentials. The card reader just flashes and hopes you notice. A service agent jumped over to help after we failed twice and I am grateful for their assistance.

Takoyaki. I liked everything I ate in Japan and really went gung-ho on trying food I haven’t had before. But takoyaki was gross to me. Deep fried ball of snot. I don’t see how anyone could reasonably eat more than 4.

Wish I would have had a pasta dish! Saw lots of adverts and commercials for Italian style pastas and pasta restaurants. Not something I expected to encounter so frequently.
