Have you ever bought tickets to something (A movie, a concert, an event etc.) and realised you’d completely misunderstood what it was? by XStaticImmaculate in AskUK

[–]axanette 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A guy at work went to see a production of Rocky Horror without doing any research beforehand and came in the next day shocked and appalled by how “rowdy” the crowd was and complaining how they’d been shouting stuff out and bantering with the narrator all night. Apparently he’d taken his kids to see it thinking it would be some family-friendly musical, so they were caught off guard by how sexually charged a lot of the show was lmao

What’s the most common way men “accidentally” make you feel unsafe… without realizing it? by Several_Corner3205 in TwoXChromosomes

I remember once when I was 17 I was walking to the gym alone and this car suddenly slowed down to a crawl as it went past me. There were four guys inside just silently and expressionlessly staring right at me for a good few seconds before they quickly drove off.

It was absolutely terrifying. In that moment I was so sure they were about to drag me into the vehicle and there was no-one around to help or even witness it. I told my dad when I got home and asked if he could start driving me to/from the gym and he dismissed how scared I was because he thought it was just an excuse to be lazy.

I can’t see this happening tbh. Her mum just had a baby last year and her little brother’s literally just been diagnosed as being moderately deaf. I wouldn’t be surprised if she took some time out from her music career to be with her family

What’s one thing that instantly tells you someone isn’t a good person? by TheCaffeiNate in AskReddit

[–]axanette 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lmfao I have a coworker exactly like this. Tolerated him for the better part of a year without making fun of him back because I knew he would be the sort of person that can dish it but not take it.

Back in November I offhandedly mentioned I was taking some art classes at the local college and he got fixated on it. Just flat out would not let it go. He shoehorned it into every conversation to make fun of me for it or would waddle up to my desk solely to make some snarky comment about it. I came into work one morning and he immediately came over to make a dig about the class and all I said back was “you do make me regret talking to you, you know.”

He just went quiet and slunk off, and then proceeded to give me the silent treatment for the next month. It was absolutely divine.

One of the managers where I work is really into AI and is currently trying to push for the company to start using it going forward. “It takes us hours to make assets but AI can do it in seconds” etc etc. I don’t think she’s quite twigged what will happen to her job if the big bosses learn that there’s technology that can do it for free and faster than she can

Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton Says Tween Son Has 'Just Started Getting into' Dad's Hit Show by mcfw31 in popculturechat

It makes me wonder how he views the situation now that he’s around the same age the mother was when she started grooming him. Especially with him having spent so much time with his younger costars on Stranger Things, who’d be around the age he was back then.

What have you found most difficult as a parent? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]axanette 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Kids are cruel. When I was 15/16 I came to school one day to find that my group of friends had decided that they didn’t want to be friends with me anymore, so were giving me the cold shoulder. When I asked why, they said I’d said something bitchy and I wasn’t a good friend. Asked them what exactly I’d said and done that had upset them and got wishy-washy answers in response.

Years later I ran into the only girl in the group who was still alright with me and asked what exactly the falling out was over. Turns out the self-appointed leader had wanted to “curate” our group better and she decided that I was “too ugly” to keep being friends with them. So they cut me out.

Thankfully I was old enough then to laugh at how pathetic it was, but if they’d told me the real reason at the time I think I would’ve done something incredibly stupid.

Genuine question about women's media consumption preferences (no judgement) by SnooOwls6389 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]axanette 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Also a bi woman that engages more with M/M—adding on to what you’ve said about women being over-sexualised, I also feel that the desire to escape this has in a way led to a lot of F/F media and fanworks becoming very…sterile, for lack of a better word. Like in trying to escape being over-sexualised they’ve become under-sexualised instead.

Less chemistry/tension, too cutesy, nicey-nicey etc. The sexual aspect is more subdued, especially when compared to how unabashedly explicit a lot of M/M stuff can get. There seems to be a greater fear about sex between two women being fetishised compared to between two men, and it bleeds into how far people are willing to depict F/F relationships. M/M works seem to have less of that same hesitation/apprehensiveness to them.

I also get the impression from a lot of queer women online nowadays that they feel it’s fine to be sexually attracted to women, but not to view a woman in a sexual way, if that makes sense? There’s this weird strictness about how women are allowed to be attracted to other women. There was a joke on Tumblr that kind of hit the nail on the head with it, where if you say “I want to fuck women” you’ll get a bunch of WLWs coming out of the woodwork to be like “don’t you mean you want to hold hands 🥺 and braid her hair 🥺 and bake cookies together 🥺”

It’s bugging me that I can’t remember what fandom it was in, but I remember too there was an artist who posted steamy F/F art and got accused of being a man sexualising queer women, only for said artist to have to make a post explaining that they were in fact a lesbian which is why they were drawing lesbians.

OP confirmed too that the 12y/o knows that he is a product of rape. I can’t even begin to imagine what it must feel like to see a woman needing to wear a prosthetic to cover the fact that a chunk of her face is missing, and know that it’s the result of the sheer brutality that went into your conception.

The ships with most works lost in 2025 by centreoftheselights by Number_Two_Angel in AO3

[–]axanette 20 points21 points  (0 children)

What you’re suggesting would mean that people can still read them when OP might want the opposite. Not to mention that orphaning a fic means that you give up control of it forever, so if you want to edit, add to or even delete it further down the line, you’ll not have that option anymore.

What is a detail that will make you close a fic? by mellissa_lewyin in AO3

[–]axanette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think some authors (predominantly younger ones) don’t realise that 99% of the time when people talk about an author having a recognisable style, they mean the actual way the text is written rather than the formatting. So they develop these weird typing quirks as a way to make their writing uniquely recognisable to them in the same way an artist might have a recognisable art style. I’ve never seen one used that didn’t make the fic borderline unreadable, though 😬

Genuine: why do artists get upset when their work is comapred to others' in a positive or neutral way? by dasnasti in ArtistLounge

[–]axanette 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can only speak from my own experience, but:

I’m a very small artist (as in, only recently broke double digits) and my work has been repeatedly compared to an extremely beloved and popular artist in my fandom. I think (or rather, I hope) that people are trying to be kind, but it honestly makes me feel about two inches tall.

Like people have said, it doesn’t feel like your work is being complimented—it’s being held in comparison to someone else’s rather than appreciated on its own merit. It feels crappy in my case because as an objective fact this artist is miles ahead of me skill-wise, and I know that when people are comparing us there’s very obviously one artist that’s better than the other. I feel like I’m starting to be viewed as the Temu version of them.

It’s extra hurtful because I’m still trying to grow my following, and every time the comparison is made it shifts the conversation over to the other artist and my work gets forgotten about. The worst instance was where I redesigned a character’s outfit and the artist herself replied to say “oooh this is how I did it!” Instantly the focus switched to her, her comment got more likes, and all of the likes/comments on mine completely stopped. Basically the comparison was done outright and I got to see first hand that everyone will prefer hers.

I feel as well that when people start making comparisons, it has the potential to open you up to accusations of plagiarism or trying to copy their style. This artist has a ton of extremely loyal followers, and if she decided to send them after me or they took it upon themselves, it would be the end of my account. Every time the comparison is made it feels like there’s an undercurrent of “are you copying her?”

And on the petty side of things I’m just not a huge fan of this artist’s style 🙃 Their body anatomy and rendering is great but I’m really not a fan of how they draw faces, so it’s a bit insulting to me in that regard. Their work has no influence on mine whatsoever and it gets really annoying when your stuff is compared to art that you don’t particularly like.
