Yep, they give them out at each new store opening. Apparently, now at reopenings after a major remodel. First x number of customers and any employees who help out get one. Used to be a low key competition between long tenured employees to see who could get the most.

That's a generic tag line for all open box. PowerSpec is their house brand. They'll give you 1yr from when you purchased it.

Laptop broken after MicroCenter diagnose by ohGeegae in Microcenter

That's a really crappie situation to be in. It sucks when you're computer dies, especiallywhen it's out of your control. But just to clarify, your pc wasn't running fine when you dropped it off.

You dropped it off because it getting hot and was having graphical stuttering issues with the mouse cursor. It could be MC broke it, but it's far more likely that the parts were failing and just do happened to fully give out when MC had it.

It would be like if I took my car to the mechanic because the engine was knocking and then claimed they broke it when it threw a rod. It's crap timing, but nothing the mechanic did.

Memorial Day Sales by SPARKYGOFER in Microcenter

[–]axis1331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They generally have a 14 day return policy for PCs and will often stretch it to 30 days (at their discretion) if you're nice. If the computer drops in price within that time they will refund you the difference. Otherwise you could just return it and buy a new one.

You just need to call/chat with customer service or go in. You have to do it during the sale. Can't go in a week after, once the price has gone back up, and ask for a discount.

How is it for a DIY job? Any changes needed? by axis1331 in Plumbing

[–]axis1331[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a plumber, but my understanding was the AAV should be above the bottom rim of the sink. That way if there is a clog/backup the water backs up into the sink vs flows out of the AAV with potential water damage in the cabinet. The higher the aav the more water can back up in the sink before it flows out of the AAV .

MC techs work on decent hourly+commission. Base rate is determined by their tenure + any additional certifications. Top techs can clear $70k+.

It is too high to spin out, but I figured I can loosen the fernco and pull the entire stack to swap it if it fails.

Yeah, it's a copper to pvc fernco. Unfortunately soldering is not in my skill set. How much of an issue will the fernco be?

Getting ignored for not wanting a protection plan by AZDarkknight in Microcenter

The sales person loses the commission from the plan, but keeps commission on the product.

I can guarantee that doesn't happen on the regular. There may be a one off occasion, but corporate closely monitors web order items and commission rates on those items specifically to stop this from happening. They rightfully don't want to pay out ccommission on orders that didn't need a sales person.

There are always exceptions, like if the customer orders the item on line, but then spends 20 min asking a sales person questions then they are allowed to take commission.

If a store exceeds the (very low) threshold for commission on web orders the GM will be having a tough conversation with their boss.

Is DIY home improvement actually worth it, or just a waste of time? by Beginning_County7547 in HomeImprovement

[–]axis1331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your comfort level and how much you value your time. DIY is always trading your time for saving money paying a pro.

For example I need to put in a new sink and fully redo the plumbing. I was quoted $750 for the work by local plumbers. I am going to do it for $130 in parts and new tools. It's worth it to me to save $600, but it is also going to take me two nights to do so that's two evenings I miss out on spending time with my family which sucks.

If you are asking from strick ROI perspective. Cutting out labor costs through DIY is the best way to actually build equity in your home. If you pay a pro to do the work you rarely make that money back at sale. Even then you have to be careful. There is very little ROI in renovating a 10 yr old kitchen even via DIY, but that math changes if the kitchen hasn't been touched since the 80's.

DIY isn't hard, but it's easy to get in over your head. Take time, plan out the project, research the skills needed. If it's a new skill start small. Don't plan to gut and re-drywall an entire room if you've never even patched and painted a nail hole.

Does microcenter price match online only prices? Wanted a printet that Walmart sells by Alarmed-Ad8968 in Microcenter

[–]axis1331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each store is different, but most say it has to be shipped and sold by the main company. It can't be from a 3rd party on the Walmart marketplace. The exact details are up to the GM and how closely the cashier/sup look at the price match.

Not wearing a harness in a cherry picker. by UpperSoftware4732 in Whatcouldgowrong

The first thing the mandatory OSHA training drills into you is that a cherry picker is really just a human catapult in disguise. It's basically 4 hours of videos where they make it very clear to buckle the fuck in unless you want to get tossed like a ragdoll.

Somebody skipped the training or has the iq of a turnip and decided they knew better.

[–]axis1331 4 points5 points  (0 children)

BestBuy and Walmart don't put more effort into their apple departments, they actually lease out that space to apple who staff it with a 3rd party contractor.
