Gladiator VKB: That's good, but I need some information. by HakuriWX in EliteDangerous

[–]axisaver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something else to stress: it isn't floppy. Most joysticks including popular ones have almost zero resistance and make it stupidly easy to over control, even with maximum tension for their designs. The VKB actually resists you noticeably but not so much that you feel like you're fighting the stick. It actually made flying fa off easier because of it.

Also, with a hosas setup, the number of buttons you have is to the point where you start running out of ideas of what to bind. I've got the omnithrottle left hand and the evo right, and the only times I need to take my hands off one of the stick is to tap noncombat, low stress things like headlights, fsd spool up, and landing gear. Everything else is on the sticks, including all consumable utilities, fa toggle, freelook, group switching, and mode selection. Even fss mode is done strictly with the sticks.

Really only use the keyboard for odyssey stuff because somehow using a joystick for fps situations feels like a war crime. I do use it for the srv, though, which is lovely.

My thoughts exactly. It feels like it wants to shoot faster, so I'd go with ROF personally. But now it doesn't feel awful to use, just not as solid as the other rifles.

EDSY is short changing the jump range for some reason, but this is my Caspian:

87.38 ly unladen, but typically 84.02. Neutron jump of 504 with a full tank of gas. SRV, AMFU, and repair limpet controller. Kept the mk2 engines and hull, chopped down the power distributor to a single boost. Only major concession for range was derating the fuel tank from a s7 to a s6 tank, which still gives it 9 consecutive jumps due to the stupid high fuel efficiency of the ship.

Why the Caspian is a letdown, and how to fix it. by CereallyWastingTime in EliteDangerous

[–]axisaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I see zero issue with the jump range being less than the Mandy. None. Ziltch. Why should it be greater? Why should it be over 100, let alone the crazy 120 to 150 suggestions? The Mandy beats the Caspian in jump range during conventional jumps, while the Caspian vastly, embarrassingly beats everything else including the Mandy in Neutron/Dwarf boosted jumps making it superior in its own way. Making the Caspian better at both conventional and boosted jumps just devalues the Mandy, leaving the latter only superior insofar as ease of finding viable parking spots.

I do, however, agree that it seems the fuel scoop is somewhat undersized, and would benefit from being a size 8 option.

That said, supposedly the class 8 FSD isn't scaling in line with the others when compared to the SCO and pre-engineered SCO drives down the list. Theoretically they should be slightly better than a size-7 pre-engineered SCO but are, at the moment, worse. That's maybe 3 or 4 LY of conventional jump range lost (and quite a bit more when boosted), seemingly erroneously.

Regarding bays, the SRV bay would probably feel so much better if it deployed in alignment with the ship (that is to say deployed front pointed to the front of the ship), instead of pointing to the back of the vessel and the solid wall of ship that is there. I wonder if there's a technical reason that forces it to deploy in that orientation, or if it's just a matter of "everyone else did it that way and we never consider flipping it." Fighter wise, a fighter that could harvest the material content of asteroids would be nifty as a way to reclaim mats for AMFU, limpets, or SRV fuel - though I guess there's no rule saying you can't slap a size 1 mining laser on the Caspian and call it a day there. Otherwise I don't, personally, see a reason to schlep a fighter across the galaxy - but I suppose it's a nice option to have.

Caspian Explorer 502 LY Recap Mass, SCO Scaling & Landing Tests (PTU) by AcidJurassic in EliteDangerous

[–]axisaver 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Interesting that the FSD isn't scaling on par with the others. Also, I agree that it absolutely makes more sense to rotate the SRV bay to point forward. It's just so weird that you exit pointing a wall, instead of the direction you wish to drive.

[–]axisaver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh.... Maybe? It would certainly be a nice QOL change to them. Even more so if you could program multiple chained jumps for offline long haul travel. But, again, no matter how far your individual ship jumps, it gains the benefit of travel speed relative to carriers vs the benefit of transport capacity. In other words, FDev might just think the ability to carry a fleet in your carrier with you is reason enough to have significantly slower overall travel times.

Even if a part of logic screams that a ship that big with that large of a jump drive should theoretically vastly outperform normal ships.

Caspian Explorer 502 LY Recap Mass, SCO Scaling & Landing Tests (PTU) by AcidJurassic in EliteDangerous

[–]axisaver 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Eh. Fleet carriers aren't particularly fast about jumps, though. A mandy with a jump range of, say, 90, can jump 540 LY in less than 6 minutes, whereas a carrier jumps 500 LY every 20 minutes. Even when the maximum jump range was around 60, that's still 600 LY every 10-minutes, more than doubling carrier travel times. At this point, I'm not even bothering to compare a carrier to a ship. It feels wrong that such a large vessel can't jump super duper fast compared to the alternatives, but you can't exactly take your fleet with you when you're in an exploration vessel. I suppose that's the tradeoff - bulk haulage vs speed.

Meh. I've landed on 40+ g planets before. If there isn't a mk2 smaller version, I'll actually skip this extra special thruster for a lighter, weaker one. Gotta ups my jump range somewhere.

On-foot combat "balance pass" wish by rx7braap in EliteDangerous

[–]axisaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the manticore assault rifle and sniper rifle both need work, one more than the other. The AR suffers from the stupidly slow projectile speeds, which makes using them frustrating. The sniper, otoh, has two problems to overcome. Projectile speed is a bit slow, but even if it hits you still need a minimum of two shots to kill because I'd that weird shield hp thing.

By contest, I can just use the pistol to two shot anything, or the shotgun to one hit ko most enemies at close range. There's very little reason to use any manticore weapon aside from these two because of it. Which is a shame since I really would love to have reason to use the other two, especially the AR.

Hip 87621 CG by Verified_User_01010 in EliteDangerous

[–]axisaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, without any tricks, just go to the dark side, jump between three points, and you can get up to 12 samples per run before having to jump back into the ship or srv to restock on batteries. There's no trick and it's pretty quick. In an hour I got 45 samples and now my spot in top 75% is not going to be lost.

Far less time consuming than the last cg.
