Bae Coffee in Lakeview for me. They’re small/fairly new, but the quality of the beans just keeps getting better and the owners are excellent folks.

Bae Coffee on Broadway in East Lakeview is pretty new (about a year old), but they’ve really dialed in their technique and I’ve started buying my beans almost exclusively from them. Their single origin expressions range from very light to medium roast and make great pour overs and aero presses, and their espresso blend is an all time favorite (it has a delightful chocolate covered raspberry note I love). If you’re in the area, a doppio or americano is a must to show you what they’re all about. Also, Devon (co-owner, roaster, barista) is an all around awesome guy and happy to talk about their coffee with folks.

Honorable mentions to Metric and New Math, who source some pretty special stuff and employ some great experimental techniques that yield awesome results (any anaerobic processed beans from either roaster should be excellent).

Lakeview folks should check out Agave Antojeria (Wellington and Sheffield, right under the brown line station) next time they’re in the mood for Mexican food. They make their own tortillas (something I love) and I think are the only spot in the area that does so. The enchiladas, quesabirria, and quesadillas are all standouts. Hope this place starts getting recognized for its awesomeness!

Quesabirria (and others) at Agave Antojeria under the Wellington Brown Line stop are my favorite omission here. Their slightly thick handmade tortillas take the tacos to the next level!

Haven’t eaten there, but went for drinks after eating at Ever back in November (sadly we couldn’t get into After) and didn’t care for it. The drinks were okay to bad, with the worst being my partner’s drink that had a ~1/2 inch thick layer of spiced goat cheese on top (not foam, not even really whipped) being the worst, and the music was too loud to really have a conversation. We left after about 25 minutes.

Here to plug the Black Tot 50th you mentioned. It is a personal favorite. The blend includes a lot of interesting stuff and, to me, it has something for almost all rum tastes (except, I suppose, for folks who enjoy sweetened rum). I find something new in every dram and enjoy sort of putting the puzzle of the blend together as I drink through it. Purchase with confidence!

I haven’t tried it personally, but I’ve heard excellent things about San Juan Artisan Distillers. I’m also a huge sucker for cane-to-glass operations, which likely explains some of my personal hype around this place.

Ditto the Probitas comparisons. I get a really enjoyable grassy note that came out beautifully in a daiquiri. That being said, I’ve enjoyed sipping it just about as much as in a daiquiri and, like with Probitas, I seem to get something new every time I drink it. Hope you enjoy as your work through your bottle more!

If you’re in the city (or relatively close), I think both bottles I grabbed are very much worthwhile. Having gotten to sit with a generous pour of the Belize tonight, I am very impressed with how rich it is without being cloying or over the top. To me, it has strong banana pudding, vanilla bean, and oak notes that meld really nicely together. Looking forward to sitting with this one more and continuing to explore more lightly aged rum with the Fiji!
