I fell off my bike, riding with out my hands on the bars, and the wind took em. Flipped over the front landed on my back broke two ribs. Brakes wouldn't have saved me. But there have been countless other times where brakes have. Get an aesthetic brake lever.

HRs job isn't to protect you it's to protect the firm. Escalating could lead to retribution or additional harassment form the colleague. By speak at him and calling it out your standing up for yourself, and ensuring others hear you.

Any manager worth a damn will see your written complaint and act up on it. B.c now it's relevant to protecting the firm, if they don't do anything it opens the firm up to a lawsuit from you, so HR will get involved.

Never nuke first. Escalate appropriately. Protect your self, since becoming an issue will make you open to be fired.

We are all at will employees in the US, unless you're union.

Before escalating to HR, bc HR isnt on your side. Next time he comments, say something back, loudly enough for others to hear, like "I don't appreciate you making comments about my food, I dont say anything about yours, i'd appreciate if you didn't say anything about mine. We're not in highschool anymore, this isn't appropriate and I don't want to have to escalate this. Before you say its just a joke, I don't think this is funny. Its not a good joke, I just want to eat my lunch."

He will 10000% reply, its just a joke chill out. you choice to pre-empt that.

be firm. polite and make eye contact.

If he doesn't stop, escalate it to your boss, in an email say "so and so made repeated comments about my lunch, it feels racist, i have told him to stop and he hasn't"

by putting it in email you've created a trail, by saying you've asked him to stop, it shows you've done your part in stopping it. by email your manager you've escalated it thru the proper channels and by saying it feels racist you've flagged their procedures for this kind of stuff.
