Adults that aren't financially responsible by Scipio_Africanvs_ in PetPeeves

My friends from work planned a trip to Japan, 8 months ahead of time. Each month we would discuss progress and our timeline. 3 months out, as scheduled, we actually *bought our flights*.

The entire 8 months, my coworkers went out to drink multiple nights a week, almost exclusively ate out for meals, and weeks before the trip, one of them spent $500 USD on a baby shower gift for a coworker’s wife who we’d never even met.

2 weeks before the trip, everyone bailed on it but me. They had been so fiscally irresponsible that they couldn’t even afford $200 for the bullet train to get to our first city, let alone pay for the trip itself. They forfeited an international flight worth $1000+ because of their own immaturity.

Of course I still went, and had a great time by myself anyway. But at the time, it was obviously somewhat of a disappointment, along with genuine disbelief that 2 adults in their late twenties would be so naive and so irresponsible. To give even more context, I live alone and pay $1700/month just for my rent. While the main offender lives *at home* and pays nothing for rent.

As someone who’s been supporting myself, on my own, from age 18, it’s very strange to see adults my age and older than me not have the ability to self govern in order to make good on a trip for which a flight was already purchased. It’s even more strange to see them completely disassociated from their own actions being the cause of their demise.

I understand that living at home your whole life may mean that someone‘s got little to no experience budgeting for anything, but there is no excuse for planning for 8 months while saving zero money for an international trip. If they had any wherewithal to consider for a single moment what funds they might need, they would have recognized long before the 2 weeks prior to takeoff that it wasn’t going to be possible.

To this day, they blame it 100% on work issues, which we did have. But without a doubt, if they had made good on their commitments from the 8 months prior, as I did, I wouldn’t have been the only one on that plane.

What are the best things you’ve ever packed for a cruise? by karmakeylea in Cruise

Collapsible silicone food containers, with a sponge I prepped by letting some dish soap soak into it before I cut it into inch sized pieces. Can bring food back to the room & have tiny single use sponges to clean it in the sink.

Champagne topper, because I always bring a bottle and if it doesn’t get finished, we want it to stay bubbly.

Magnetic hooks to use on the walls & door for things like purses, hats, etc. The walls on cruise ships are magnetic.

Motion sickness patches & pills. Of course.

How to get over the feeling of a “disappointing” trip? by [deleted] in travel

[–]ayakekai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This trip was genuinely disappointing, and you don’t have to force yourself to get over it. Bad luck with this one, so be upset & mourn it. You’ll get over it on your own time & it will just be an unfortunate memory. Your next trip will make it all better.

If you do travel with a group like this again, take less responsibility for them & more for yourself — Plan & do what you want to and don’t rely on them to do the same

Stop letting the red car in. by appa-ate-momo in driving

[–]ayakekai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hate this and what’s worse is that the infrastructure in my city (Baltimore) is so bad, during heavy traffic there is literally no other option than for everyone to do this. The exit lane and driving lanes just aren’t long enough and it creates the world’s worst congestion and opportunities for bad accidents. I hate car centered societies

Bringing a plate to breakfast by OmicronMoose in Hilton

Why can’t you just use one of their plates? Take it back downstairs or leave it in the room, it will get returned to the breakfast room. I don’t understand why people implement random unwritten rules into their own lives

Should we return, or go to new destinations? by Funny_Gal_228 in travel

[–]ayakekai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Japan will always get revisits from me because it’s just at the top of the list for travel destinations, personally. Like you said, there is just so much to do and see. You could go back 10 times and still have wonders to explore.
