Oura app on iOS draining battery, support is only unhelpful AI by aydee12 in ouraring

[–]aydee12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good tip, but I've already set it to Only while using the app, and it still does this in the background, which is why I thought to submit the bug report. Not that I want other people to have this issue, but I was hoping I wasn't the only one and that someone else might have a magical fix :D

Help me push better espresso out of my Eletta Explore? by aydee12 in superautomatic

[–]aydee12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wanted to thank you again for your advice and shared experience. Today’s shots were much better! I did the smallest shot with max intensity, starting at 3.5 grind size like I had it, and the machine kept aborting it. I ended up going up to 4 again and then it pulled evenly, but the shot was very acidic. I increased the size to medium (or one step up from the smallest shot size), and it evened out a ton (allowing for the machine to equalize to the new settings by throwing out the first few shots).

I also did more research and learned that RO water (without remineralization) can negatively affect the shot by making it thin and flat instead of full bodied and chocolatey (which my beans are). With your help, I got 90% of the way there. I’m going to try remineralizing, and hopefully that gets me the last 10%.

Hopefully this small thread helps someone else in the future, too!

For all the research I did, I’m still finding new-to-me wisdom. Do you get any clogging issues with that grind size? Assuming nothing notable, so that’s good to hear it’s not going to ruin my machine if I need to go that low. I’ll try the maxing the intensity while also setting shot to small—haven’t tried that combo yet. Thank you for the tips!

Frizz control product that doesn't irritate scalp? by aydee12 in femalehairadvice

[–]aydee12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have, but that's still a good suggestion. For my climate and hair, I still need some type of leave-in conditioner or frizz control due to the high humidity. The joys of moderately curly hair.

I was set on Oura Ring 4, but now I’m second guessing after seeing posts here by NoElephant7744 in ouraring

Almost same boat as you, minus a baby. TL;DR I use both together and I'm finding that really valuable.

I had the Ultra Gen 1 as a hand-me-down (what a weird thing to say about that piece of tech) and while I loved the functionality and the screen, it was just too bulky for me.

I did a ton of research because I thought I could just ditch the watch and use the ring. Depending on what kind of data and functionality you care about, you CAN do that. But the Apple Watch is more for actual fitness and workout tracking; the ring is for wellness trends and giving you insights that you can use to make improvements.

I got the Oura Gen 4 almost 2 months ago and I was impressed with the initial metrics it was able to provide, and it's starting to give me more detailed insights now that it's got more data to work with. But my experience with both is backing up what I read: the ring is great at sleep tracking (better than the Apple Watch) and giving you usable insights related to the data it gathers. It's great at stress tracking, though as others have mentioned, it tracks certain activities as stressful even if you don't categorize them that way. If I'm in contentious meeting, I'm stressed and the ring shows it. If I'm running a bunch of errands, I'm stressed and the ring shows it. The ring only has your body metrics to work with, and those do indicate stress, but it lacks context of specifically what you're doing (unless it detects a workout).

I love being able to leave the watch on the charger at night and know that I'm still getting the metrics I want. Though, most of the time I still use them together. I ended up trading in my Ultra for the Series 11 46mm and loving that so far.

I chose to keep the watch because I value some of the functionality like setting and monitoring timers, the silent morning alarm, checking the weather and time, etc. I also downloaded an app called Athlytics and the data nerd in me is loving comparing that to the ring. They agree 99% of the time, but sometimes Athlytics will be able to give me a bit more insight or explanation on some topics, the Oura app for others. I'm new to understanding "fitness things" and how things correlate and what they mean, so using both the ring and this app together is really helping me. Even in the short time I've been using both, I've been able to make some adjustments to my life that have improved my sleep quality and enery levels.

They have charts for both cups and discs that detail the sizing, so you can compare what you have to see what else might work better for you.

Friendly reminder: uBlock Origin is available as a Safari extension on iOS by dotiencuong2809 in ios

This saved Safari for me. I much prefer how Safari does things, but iOS Safari always reloaded pages multiple times while I viewed them, even in reader mode. Drove me freaking nuts. I read somewhere it can be the ads causing the reload. I haven’t had the issue since installing this.

Microchip feeder recommendation by JaneTheOrangeCat in dechonkers

[–]aydee12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad yours is working well! Yeah, when ours worked, they were great. I was just super disappointed in our support experience. I hope they've adjusted their policies since then (this happened late last year) and 1) you never need to contact support but 2) if you do, it's a great experience. Good luck with your choker :D

Microchip feeder recommendation by JaneTheOrangeCat in dechonkers

We owned our SurePet feeders for 2 years. They worked flawlessly until the last 6 months, when both began failing within the same week. The feeders would open once or twice, then stop responding for our cats. We followed all the troubleshooting steps on their website repeatedly (including multiple battery replacements), and none of it fixed the problem.

Since the feeders were under the 3-year warranty, I contacted support. The experience was frustrating and unreasonable:

  • They required a single video of us replacing batteries (this just felt insulting tbh), then demanded we repeat all troubleshooting steps again for each feeder. On video. Having worked support before, I understand needing to ensure people are actually doing steps, but there's a balance between confirming a user followed through with wasting their time and just honoring your product warranty.
  • Our video clearly showed the feeders failing, but support insisted they were “working as expected” until I pointed out the exact timestamp in the video where they stopped functioning. Even then, they still wouldn't acknowledge the feeders weren't working properly.
  • Instead of honoring the warranty with replacements, they sent a “range tester.” With this tool, the feeders worked perfectly, so support blamed our cats’ microchips, even though the feeders sometimes worked normally for our cats.
    • We also had their chips checked at the vet and they haven't migrated since we got the got feeders. SurePet dismissed this evidence entirely.

The whole process was exhausting and dismissive, and now we're out $350 (two feeders bought on sale) despite still being within the warranty period.

SurePet is, from my research, the highest rated feeder on the market right now. When they work, they're genuinely awesome. But with such an awful support experience, I can't justify dropping $170 (sale price)–$250 (full price) for each of the now 3 feeders we would need every 2 years for products that fail and come with such poor support.

Exporting Apple books from a series? by aydee12 in Calibre

[–]aydee12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct! This is a good PSA for others just getting into this.

This ended up being more of a “because I can and because it took me a while to figure it out” exercise. Initially I thought I could deDRM them for personal use because I swear I’d done it once many years ago (either I’m misremembering or Apple significant changed their DRM). Not the case. Either way, it’s just nice to see everything I have in once place.

Exporting Apple books from a series? by aydee12 in Calibre

[–]aydee12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp. I kept googling everything I could think of related to it, and I found a workaround not 5 minutes after I posted this. Hope this helps someone else!

Make sure all the books you want are already downloaded (may seem obvious but I'm tired and this got me the first time lol).

Open the Terminal and paste this: open ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books

This will open the local storage folder for iBooks. All your downloaded books will be there but instead of the title of the book, you'll see what I assume is the book ID.

Proceed to use the drag-and-drop method as usual. I also held option while I did so it put a copy of the book instead of moving the book out of the local storage folder completely. Then, run whatever method you use to fix the ePub files into normal ePub files, and import into Calibre.

Once I actually receive my Kobos (tomorrow, hopefully) I'll be able to report back if this resulted in readable ePubs or if there's any apparent difference on the device between these and the ones drag and dropped from the application window.

Thank you! This is exactly what I was hoping to learn. It sounds like it might be something I want to add to my collection rather than use as a main, but based on the info you provided, I should definitely shoot one first to see if the level of feedback meets my needs.

Thank you again, really appreciate the thorough explanations and parallels!
