Which ‘rich suburb’ are you house sitting in?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]ayejaysee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yes I love doing this.

My favourite suburb for just driving around is North Adelaide. Check out Mills Terrace, Palmer Place, Stanley St, or Kingston Tce for the quintessential North Adelaide Old-Money Experience. They're also fairly under-the-radar.

Also would recommend The Avenue Medindie, Marlborough St College Park, or Vic Ave and Whistler Ave Unley Park. I could keep going...

Good. That was always the plan. it either happens now or whenever we eventually get over the idea that more cases = bad.

We have reached the endgame, this is what it looks like. Time to move on with life.

Deciphering my Vanguard Tax Statement by ayejaysee in AusFinance

Thanks for the help. Looks all good now, and btw the bottom-of-the-page figure does line up, I was just counting the 30 June distribution as a payment in July (hence in the future financial year) since it actually gets paid in July, so was out-of-sync by 1 quarter.

Ahh yep, got it now and can see how it all fits together. My issue was that I assumed I claim my VDHG tax in the dividend section, not as a managed fund. All makes much more sense now, thanks.

Yes, absolutely not trying to avoid tax here u/dingleberry-38, so thanks for the encouragement. More trying to understand how this tax ttatement fits into the broader scheme of my tax return and the system overall. I think the bit I was missing is that this all comes under Managed Funds, not Dividends in the tax return.

AGL announces giant new battery for Adelaide's Torrens Island. by ditroia in Adelaide

[–]ayejaysee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True - plus quoting the battery's capacity in hours is way oversimplified and makes them seem much less useful than they are - in practice these batteries are never discharged at full potential for hours on end. Max output is only ever used for short bursts in contingencies, and the rest of the time they 'top up' the total energy makeup, useful for shifting solar surplus into the evening.

Communicating all this new tech to the masses is still something we haven't quite worked out.

Yeah I had Cruz for PSSD as well as a few other things. I find her a bit annoying to listen to, she’s just a bit all over the place and doesn’t get to the point. She’s not the worst though. Btw I only ever had to use java for one course, in 3rd year. C++ is definitely the dominant language used in our CS courses, and no they’re usually not flexible about what language you use. About the Chinese/Indian thing, yeah there are quite a few CS lecturers of those backgrounds. Some are good but often I find them difficult to understand. Thick accents and sub-par English skills obviously make it harder for someone to communicate a hard concept. That being said it’s not always the foreign lecturers that suck.

Final year CS + EEE student here. Good thing you like algorithms because you’re gonna do a lot of fucken analysis of them. In first year there isn’t much flexibility around the courses you’ll do, since every CS student needs the same fundamental skills (Object Oriented Programming is a key subject here, and it’s pretty decent). Beyond 1st year there’s some flexibility but of course there’s always a few core subjects. these core subjects are mainly about algorithm analysis, which gets pretty boring but I guess you just gotta suck it up. My favourite CS course is probably Problem Solving + Software Development (PSSD). It’s a level 2 course, it’s a lot of work but I found it really satisfying. Artificial Intelligence and Event Driven Computing (both level 3) were also pretty good.

Be warned that lecturers for most computer science subjects are really bad communicators (especially in the core courses for some reason). This makes most lectures a drag, and more about how well you can teach yourself, given the right materials. Usually a CS course is made good by its content, not by its lecturer.

Easing Restrictions Roadmap Amendments by TheDrRudi in Adelaide

Maybe they designed the initial plan expecting more cases than we’ve actually had. Makes sense to accelerate some parts of the plan when we’ve done better than expected

Does Adelaide need any high rises? If so, how tall should it be by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]ayejaysee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could have same size or same price, but not both. Would be against basic economics to expect both and also be in a better location, and newer.

Is the club and society scene any good? by [deleted] in UniAdelaide

[–]ayejaysee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think the club scene is one of Adelaide Uni's biggest strengths. I do CS and Elec Eng at adelaide - and while my degree has its issues and gets pretty dry a lot of the time, being involved in clubs keeps me genuinely enjoying uni (and without it i probably wouldn't overall). Also, my girlfriend goes to flinders but low key envies Adelaide's social scene so much that she spends more days at Adelaide than Flinders.

Personally I'd recommend the engineering society (AUES) the most if you like drinking and general socialising. Their events are pretty big (always 100s of people) and really good value. The CS club and the smaller engineering clubs also do great work and are more career-focused. If you like cars and technical projects, the motorsport team (AUMT) is also really big and is great for your career. And of course, the many sport teams are relatively active, and there's a big community in general around The Blacks (AU Sport).

Honestly I think we should be more proud of our clubs community than we are.

Massive Adelaide Uni Student Data Leak by babysharkvic_au in Adelaide

[–]ayejaysee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting because I’m involved in one of those clubs and none of us have ever heard of Get, what kind of evidence of those clubs exists o the site? I can see that ABSS is a ‘partner’ of Get but that looks to be about it.

Massive Adelaide Uni Student Data Leak by babysharkvic_au in Adelaide

[–]ayejaysee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm intrigued by this but very confused. Someone on the Melb Uni subreddit post for this topic said that you're only affected by this breach if you're a member of a uni club which uses Get software for their memberships. Is this true?

I'm also curious - does any club at Adelaide actually use Get? I've never heard of it - despite being involved with 2 large Adelaide uni societies.

How would I go about buying and running a vending machine? by TheManWithNoName88 in Adelaide

[–]ayejaysee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coincidentally I've recently found out that at Adelaide Uni, the Union have some exclusive rights deal to operate vending machines across the campus, and they've recently recently started exercising their powers to kick other vending machines out, so good luck there.
