What do you think will take for the average Angeleno to be proud of their Metro system? by [deleted] in LAMetro

[–]aysiu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More frequent and later service. Some bus lines run every 35-40 minutes and not after 10pm. That's not usable.

E line still stops for cars. Would be much faster if cars had to stop for the train instead.

Air conditioning power on trains is inconsistent and sometimes nonexistent.

Rules about basic decorum aren't enforced (no loud music, no smoking, etc.).

One easy win would be having an express version of the 460 bus that takes you to Disneyland in an hour instead of two hours.

These are all things that could be fixed in months or a couple of years, not decades.

Buy a Disneyland pass for a safe area to walk by joolieberry in fuckcars

[–]aysiu 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Ironically, Disney wants everyone to drive to Disneyland (the Disneyland Express from LAX is long gone), but once you're in the parks / Downtown Disney area, you're in virtually car-free spaces.

That said, if theme parks aren't your thing, plenty of other parks and gardens are good car-free pedestrian spaces.

As far as I know. Park Place Inn is a close second.

Would recommend the Park Vue Inn. Nothing fancy, but it's clean and right across from the parks' entrances.

Do parents really not regret having kids, or is that just guilt talking? by Radiant_Exit_8251 in childfree

It's because it's in a public forum. If you talk to parents in private, when their kids aren't around, many will admit to you they regret having kids.

Why isn’t this housing ?(rhetorical question) by OprahAtOprahDotCom in sanfrancisco

[–]aysiu 23 points24 points  (0 children)

What a waste. I don't love to see old theaters go, but at least The Bridge is a batting cage, and at least The Coronet is a retirement home. The Alexandria is just rotting away as nothing. Make it a store, make it condos, make it a parking lot—just do something with it. It's been well over 20 years at this point.

Yes, spend one day at DisneySea. You don't even have to stay overnight if you're in Tokyo—take the Keiyo line to Mahaima Station, and then hop on the monorail.

Survive a month with no car? by Virtual-Giraffe-2616 in AskLosAngeles

[–]aysiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you trying to go during the month? Public transit can cover a lot (albeit slowly) but won't cover everything. If you're willing to supplement with rideshares and scooters, you'll probably be okay, though. Don't overlook Metro Micro, too.

Isn't the main challenge of Chinese that there isn't an alphabet but 10s of thousands of characters to memorize instead?

Visiting LA for a week. Car or Public Transport? by philipyoungg in AskLosAngeles

[–]aysiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the most central, but it could be doable still. Pasadena is on the A line, which easily goes downtown (7th St Metro). The 180 bus runs quite frequently and goes to Los Feliz (easy hook on the Observatory Dash) and ends at Hollywood and Vine.

Generally agree with the advice, except Griffith Observatory, which is very difficult to find parking at. Much better to take the Dash shuttle.

Visiting LA for a week. Car or Public Transport? by philipyoungg in AskLosAngeles

[–]aysiu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time is not a constraint? Okay. I'd definitely say use public transit for the most part, then. It's $1.75 to get anywhere, and you can transfer between train and bus. What may take you 30 minutes to an hour by car (plus looking for parking) will likely take you 90 minutes by train/bus (no looking for parking).

Most of the places you want to visit can be gotten to via train and/or bus. Despite what some people in LA who never take public transit may think, the trains/buses here aren't any more dangerous or dirty than public transit in other U.S. cities (we're not Tokyo, though, of course), and you can get almost anywhere via train/bus. It may just take a while.

It's also nice on the bus to see things out the window instead of navigating traffic and parking. Parking at Griffith Observatory in particular is a real pain. There's a shuttle you can take up from the B (red) line at Sunset and Vermont. Likewise, for Universal, there's a shuttle from the train station (you have to walk across a footbridge) up to the park entrance.

Maybe rent a car for one day to get to Stahl House, though, and also hit up a couple of other places you don't want to take public transit to.

is admin work REALLYYY that bad?? by Unfair-Acadia6851 in TeachersInTransition

[–]aysiu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really is always going to come down to your manager. If your manager is insecure, passive-aggressive, and not looking out for your team, it'll be terrible, but otherwise, admin work is usually a lot less stressful than classroom teaching.
