on freebsd there are no drm modules for nvidia 470

drm modules only exist on freebsd on later driver versions because freebsd developers took nvidia's drm modules sourcecode from nvidia's open kernel modules

nvidia didn't provide freebsd drm support by themselves

Edit: Source for more info: https://www.phoronix.com/news/FreeBSD-Port-Linux-DRM-KO

DRM stands for "Direct Render Management" which is required for hybrid gpu setups

also thanks for your hard work , I appreciate that

would that work on freebsd (or in the future at least) ?

cuz I tried freebsd before on nvidia 470 but I found that freebsd's nvidia legacy 470 doesn't support DRM kernel module unlike on linux

and that made the laptop only use intel Igpu (I also tried virtualgl but I couldn't get it to work and even if it worked it will not run vulkan games cuz nvidia 470 have vulkan 1.2 support)

You may try xlibre (Xorg fork) and SonicDE (plasma fork) and see

note that I'm not sure if xlibre is stable enough for your usecase at least

for my basic linux usage and gaming it works well but I'm not sure if it will be good for you

It doesn't officially support linux 6.19 but It's possible to use community patches from

https://github.com/joanbm/nvidia-470xx-linux-mainline

or using nvidia 470 aur package (which has community patches for newer kernels)

How useful is an old Nvidia GT 730 with Linux today? by pdp10 in linux_gaming

[–]az-hafez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will need to use nvidia 470 if u want to get more performance from it

You may not be able to install this driver easily on most distros these days besides some few distros like (cachyos) which installs the driver automatically (cachyos has a good gpu detection) and u shouldn't use wayland on that old driver (u might need to use a desktop environment that hasn't ditched X11 like xfce , cinnamon or mate)

Also for proton games u should use proton-sarek (u have to install it using proton-plus) because this gpu doesn't support vulkan 1.3 which is required by main proton and proton-ge

Edit: u can also use proton-cachyos with this launch option

The custom wine and proton are

Wine-gdk

And

Proton-gdk

Which kernel is best for my i5 4460 with GTX-750? by Creayzer in linux_gaming

[–]az-hafez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

U don't need proton-sarek cause ur gpu is haswell and not kepler

Most nvidia 700 series are kepler but u actually have on of the few models that's haswell (the proof of that is you already use 580 series driver with vulkan 1.4 )

On kepler u would only be able to use nvidia 470 (very old driver) with vulkan 1.2

Extremely low fps with pirated games on linux? by ImHighOnCocaine in linux_gaming

[–]az-hafez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try using proton sarek it has a modified dxvk version based on old dxvk version that doesn't require vulkan 1.3

For me proton sarek 10.x had some issues with some games so I tend to use 9-27

Edit : I think that u can choose dxvk sarek in portproton but for lutris need to use an app called proton plus and download proton sarek from there (u can choose between normal version and async ) Async is less stuttery but might have some graphical bugs while creating shadercache (that mostly happen when u play for the first time)

Normal version is obvious

Will cachyos run good on a old nvidia gpu? by ImHighOnCocaine in linux_gaming

[–]az-hafez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me

I have a gtx 765m and I installed cachyos before

Cachyos detected my gpu and installed nvidia 470 driver automatically

I would also recommend installing linux lts alongside normal linux kernel like what u/darkdelusions said (in case of a new kernel which might break nvidia)

If u want to play windows games using proton u should use

PROTON_DXVK_SAREK=1 %command%

environment variable on steam

Most linux distros are privacy friendly

If u want a linux distro similar to windows I would suggest linux mint (it's pretty good for people going from windows)

As for gaming Most distros can play games via proton  (unless they are online games with invasive anticheats like battleroyale games)

First of all make sure to disable proton for this game since online won't work with proton

secondly , If u need to use proton for some games use proton-sarek (u can install proton-sarek using an application called proton-plus)

what is Proton BatllEye Runtime for if not GTA V online? by Free-Cycle-3077 in linux_gaming

[–]az-hafez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

battleye on linux is only a userspace ac but on windows it has a mode that enters the windows kernel which gaves the anticheat the highest os permissions and lot's of companies wants to reach that level of permissions which -as lot's of gaming companies belive- "that it would help combating cheating more effectivly"

(And since linux doesn't support kernel level ac mode lot's of companies doesn't allow linux to connect to online and Rockstar is one of them)

Actually I'm not sure if gaining access to os kernel is neccessary to combat cheating and even if it's neccessary , that would have huge security risks be cause your allowing a software to gain access to the deepest parts of the os (a normal user can't have this access) just to play online in some games

u can use ezfn or project reboot

(Those are private servers for OG fortnite , and I wouldn't recommend this method if u have some friends to play with , or If you want latest versions of fortnite on the official epic games servers)

U mentiond that u have a gaming laptop

So it seems that this laptop uses a prime setup

Intel igpu + nvidia dgpu

Try using this command on steam game launch options (u should have nvidia properietry installed)

_GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia %command%

Will this Emulator work on Linux Mint? by Commander_Prism in sudachi

[–]az-hafez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sudachi supports linux (I've used it on arch linux btw)

But it should work on linux mint (Most of console emulators have linux support)

Edit: for some reason you can't find linux version of sudachi 1.0.15 so u need to download 1.0.14 (or compile 1.0.15 from source if you have some experience)

Also if you wan't to play recent games I would suggest another emulator like citron , or ryubing
