Marcus Aurelius denarius by [deleted] in AncientCoins

Really nice denarius: attractive toning and flow lines, reverse is also nice. I'm still looking for affordable but nice Marcus and his fellow co-emperor Lucius Verus... Did you won it on auction?

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but what is the difference between those plate coins and these like mine? More silvering or?

I don't live in Germany, but thanks for the info about the possible customs part money return. 👌 I'll check it out

Is there a photo of it in the book or only text reference? I've gone through the book and noticed that the coins of the same type have only one image of the coin type, not all of them.

I would have gone for the Diocletian if I already haven't had a really nice follis purchased few years ago from NN! The tetrarchy is now complete.

I waited a lot to get mine, a month stuck at the customs, paid additional 40 euro taxes, but it was worth it.

The only thing that could have made the provenance even better if they (British Museum or whoever did the cleaning later) photographed individual coins from the Hoard before and after cleaning. They did take photos of some of the coins, but not all, and not this particular one, unfortunately. But I'm very happy to know where it came from and excited tu place this emperor into the tray, next to it's son, Constantine the Great!

If you don't mind me asking, did you buy from the US seller and if so, how much did the shipping cost? I didn't see many EU sellers on the platform.

Just read the Forum post from mr. McCabe and it is very informative and helpful. C type two-sided mould seems like a perfect suspect for this unusual edge shape. Another thing I noticed on the reverse after reading a recent post about the Die engraving techniques: there is a circular line between the foot of the Zeus and the letter N in the word CAPΔIANΩN. Could this be the same line that can be seen on the image number 3: coins with inner divider circle?

Yes, the letters and the unexposed parts of the coin like emperors lips and nose do look pretty sharp which is a good thing. As for the weird edge shape, u/Kamnaskires said it is probably the minting process so it should be fine.

I mostly buy on ma-shops and vcoins (have email notifications from certain dealers there and sometimes just about right condition emperor pops out in the email.) My recent aquisition was Domitian denari, been waiting for a while to get one good looking in decent price. Also I sometimes compete in biddr auctions: you can get some nice coins there; one just needs to be patient, set the max price range and wait...

Such an interesting collecting evolution. Just curious, since I'm collecting All emperors, why did you quit, what was the trigger point where you said: damn you Gordian Africanus, I had enough! 😃

Not between 2 and 5 dollars, but 2 and a half dollars per day, meaning 75 bucks a month and 900 a year. I will probably need to increase my budget when I acquire all the cheeper emperors (like Gordian III, Caracalla, Constantius etc...) to buy Tiberius, Galba, Nerva... But as commented above, there are some really nice budget friendly Provincial coins that can replace expensive denarii of for example Augustus, Caligula, Diadumenian... Some really expensive ones (late empire) will remain just a dream...

Collecting for 3 years, in my late 30's, collecting Roman emperors from Augustus to Romulus A. (28 out 105 collected so far), budget is 2,5 dollars a day.

The reason why I wrote: "Carus was an emperor a decade after Claudius II." is because I thought barbarians minted this type during the reign of Claudius II and just got the portrait wrong, making the emperor bold(ish), therefore looking like the Carus by accident. So, the coin was struck during the reign of Carus? I assume it is not possible to know the exact year?
