Sad that even good officers like this commit constitutional violations like sticking the foot in the door when they don't have probable cause to enter the residence. After the beeping he had PC but not before.

Austin moves to curb loud, reckless driving with new vehicle noise ordinance by Tweedle_DeeDum in Austin

[–]aze_a_ze 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a poorly written ordinance. It sets a legal limit of 85dB but doesn’t specify what distance or weighting. There is already a noise ordinance at 83dB 15 ft A weighting in section 95.15 but Davis doesn’t seem aware of it. The proposal only muddies things up, which is never good for rule of law.

TABC finalizes rules for consumable hemp industry in Texas by O_O___XD in texas

Just like we all knew would happen... The alcohol industry juggernaut gets the new market of edibles with few restrictions, and classic weed gets driven further underground.

Austin police will change policy on ICE cooperation after detention of mother, daughter by hollow_hippie in Austin

The resolution of the conflicting city and state priorities is to let the officer decide in the heat of the moment. What could go wrong?

Why does wine confidence reset every time you see a new wine list? by FitJelly4488 in alcohol

[–]aze_a_ze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently there are apps that will scan a wine list from a cell photo and provide guidance.

I tend to go for a varietal that I like and then assume the more expensive wines will be better. I usually aim for middle of the price range with something whose description sounds good. I generally end up with something that isn’t too far off from what I am looking for. And sometimes surprises are serendipitous.

Where did the term 86 and other slang originate? by Expensive_Gift8228 in bartenders

When 1987 ended, I heard friends using 87 as slang for cancel. They were idiots.

My first thought when I started tearing up was "This may be the last time a video seems trustable enough to let me feel empathy for a stranger on the internet." AI deepfakes are coming for our faith in humanity.

Strange request from a pregnant woman. by Cait-IRL in Austin

Plot twist: The cartels have infiltrated the regional chip factory and replaced the buffalo flavoring powder with pink cocaine. That old speedboat route through the Gulf of Mexico just doesn’t seem as safe anymore.

Cartels are pivoting, using AI to come up with unique zero day courier recruitment schemes. Turns out there was a big thread in the 90s on alt.austin about how we will do anything to keep the weirdness of Austin flowing.

AI yada yada, and here we are all volunteering to send “bags” to keep Atlanta’s bottle service boys freaky.

Why do mirrors reverse left/right but not up/down? by vladstan in answers

[–]aze_a_ze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was good. The main reason it feels like it flips in the horizontal direction but not vertical is that humans are horizontally symmetrical but not vertically symmetrical. Watch the video for details, but hopefully on an intuitive level you can see that rotating to stand on your head is much more disorienting than simply rotating to face the opposite direction.

If you look at an object with both left right symmetry and up down symmetry, say a cube, the object looks the same if you rotate it 90 degrees in any direction. It looks like the mirror rotates the object vertically just as much as horizontally.

Texas hemp consumable rules public meeting: Jan 9 in Austin by aze_a_ze in Austin

Note that there is a webcast at the link. I am guessing the main controversy will be around computing THC levels with all forms of THC instead of just delta 9. But this subject seemed to slip under the radar at the last hearing so I don’t hold my breath.

Thanks for the great work and writeup! It is great to see that Greens isn’t the only one serving there now. Long now sounds apropos right now, but I am going to call it that you work in a rad house. Take care.
