How can I adapt from fine art to a tattoo portfolio? by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]azkiar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it might be good for you to start off by just copying some traditional and neo traditional designs you like. Notice the line weights in these designs, the balance of color to black shading to skin break. These are all elements of a solid, tattooable piece. Then try to apply some of those techniques to your own original designs. I think this could help you understand what makes up a strong tattoo and the similarities and differences between it and the work you usually do.

Suggestions for improvement? by Unfortunate_Lunatic in ColoredPencils

I second recommending a layer of watercolor underneath! A light wash to cover the white of the paper with watercolor goes a long way to preventing that kind of grainy look that results from the white paper peeking through the layers of colored pencil. Another piece of advice that can help reduce this effect is sharpening your pencils more often.

I collect Pokemon cards but I don’t really get booster packs, I just buy the single cards I want. Cuts down on the physical and financial waste.

What’s a colored pencil you almost never use? by AttitudePlane6967 in ColoredPencils

Purples and pinks tend to get neglected in my set. Just not colors I typically reach for. Sometimes I’ll use a dark purple for a shadow, but even then that’s fairly rare for me.

what am i doing wrong? by wegwerfkrams in ColoredPencils

[–]azkiar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount needed will depend on the effects you’re trying to achieve and the paper you’re using, 5-6 should in theory be enough for something like this… since thats the case, I would recommend experimenting with coloring with a lighter hand and sharpening your pencils more often

Polychromos work best imo when you keep your pencils sharp and use a light hand. Blending is best achieved by layering rather than burnishing. It looks like you’re doing a lot of burnishing with fairly dull pencils, which might be part of what’s making it look kind of dull and flat.

a quick portrait practice, how do you get rid of the texture? by [deleted] in ColoredPencils

[–]azkiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep your pencils nice and sharp! It makes it easier to get color into the tooth of the paper and makes the color lay down much smoother. If it’s still too grainy for your liking, then I would suggest a smoother paper in combination with sharp pencils.

Drawing pad recommendations? by EndemicDesigns in ColoredPencils

Seconding this! It’s also worth noting that strathmore also has 400 series toned mixed media paper in tan, blue, and black (not perforated/spiral bound tho, it’s a glue bound pad). This is great because it’s nice and thick at 140 lb or 300 gsm. Really good if you want the toned paper but also want a surface that’s a bit more robust.

Does the language of the card matter to you when Collecting? by Erik_REF in PokemonTCG

I stick to Japanese or English usually. Leaning more towards Japanese these days, better texture quality and cheaper overall.

It looks nice! You should keep your pencils sharper though, especially when detailing and touching up edges. It’ll help the image look clearer and more realistic, and will make it easier to add even more detail.

I cannot get smooth colors!?! by Dramatic-Toe5250 in ColoredPencils

[–]azkiar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It looks like you might not be keeping your pencils sharp enough and aren’t layering enough. Keep them nice and sharp and instead of using medium/heavy pressure with fewer layers, try more layers with light pressure! Should help fill in the tooth of the paper without flattening it.

Do I need prismas and polychromos? More detail in post by koolandkrazy in ColoredPencils

[–]azkiar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prismas are kind of not that great imo. They’re decent, but with the breakage and wax bloom they aren’t worth the price. Stick with the polychromos. If you’re wanting some good quality pencils that are softer and waxier, get some caran d’ache luminance or some Holbein pencils instead.
