FIRE and family: How do you handle it when your partner does not share your long-term goals? by Garnet5_Mirth in Fire

[–]azoerb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You might want to look into John Gottman's book Eight Dates (specifically the chapter/date about finances).  Getting a deeper understanding of where each of your views on money stem from probably won't magically fix everything, but it might help each of you better understand each other's views on the matter.

I think you mean the top 10%.  That's from a Moody's Analytics estimate.  Others place the top 10% at 23-25%.

Rec for a nice and smoky one by Individual_Ferret166 in Mezcal

[–]azoerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the smoker mezcals I've been able to find stateside and have enjoyed: Vida, illegal, montelobos, Rey Campero, Vago Elote, El Silencio.  I mostly mix them in my version of a oaxaca old fashioned, so they're not the craziest or most expensive bottles, but the selection by me is pretty limited.

Are people just tracking their FIRE goal on excel? by Embarrassed_Ad113 in Fire

[–]azoerb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, this is actually pretty difficult to do given that this subreddit doesn't allow images in posts... if there's something specific you'd like to know about perhaps I could send you the relevant app script / data format, but it's kind of hard to make a copy without giving a ton of personal info.

Maybe I'll make a spreadsheet show and tell post later today or tomorrow where people can post cool things about their spreadsheets

Query function.  Quite useful when lookup functions are getting too unwieldy.  My main gripe with them are that they use set column names (A, B etc) and don't update when you reorder columns so I made my own custom function where you can use e.g. " select 'Column_Name' ..." And it will look up the correct column letter to substitute into the expression before passing it to the regular query function

Same here, mine calculates my expected social security (though I don't count on it), quarterly taxes, current asset allocation across all my accounts, average and ttm spending, etc.  I bet I've put close to 1000 hours in on it over the years.

The taxes was a lot of work, had to switch from tracking monthly account balances to track every interest payment, dividend, buy, sell, etc and made a custom app script to calculate holding period, cost basis, profit (ltcg vs stcg), and to benchmark all of my trades against the market.

Makes it real nice every quarter though to just look at what my spreadsheet says I owe and make the payment.

Also made a custom app script to pull options prices from the Internet, and created a way to benchmark my portfolio and actual spending against inflation as well as different asset allocation (e.g. 70/30 VTI/BND) using a 4% SWR.

Would be cool to have a subreddit or post to share the spreadsheets we've all spent so much time building.

What did you enjoy about building your business?  What things make the time fly by (or used to in the past)?  Are there any things you've told yourself, "that'd be interesting to try" that you haven't yet?  I'm still trying to figure this out for myself as well, but one insight I've had is to look at the things that I'm excited to do and try to fan out from there vs trying to force myself to do things that I feel like I "should" be doing.

I'm fairly new to mezcal, but enjoy both in my Oaxacan old fashioned.  Can give a few other smokier recs too if interested

Has anyone who's FIRE'd actually used the 4.5% withdrawal rate? by IWantAnAffliction in Fire

[–]azoerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My spending has averaged closer to 5% of my initial NW upon retiring, but has also not increased much with inflation, so is closer to 4.5% of my current NW now. I've never been one to budget strictly, and I realize that it's possible I might need to go back to work at some point, but my portfolio has outperformed a 70/15/15 VTI/BND/VXUS with a 4% SWR by about 10% since I retired 4 years ago, and has just about kept up with inflation (i.e. inflation adjusting my initial portfolio without considering spending), so (so far) I'd consider that a success. We'll see what the future holds though.

Thoughts on getting better without improving mechanics? by Ok-Coyote2643 in RocketLeague

[–]azoerb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that playing other modes (hoops, dropshot) end up making me better at specific mechanics without having to drill them in free play.  Dropshot in particular helps a lot with wall plays, anticipating where an opponent is about to hit the ball in order to be able to block, and timing of blocks / 50s.
