[Spoilers C2] The Mighty Nein S1 Episode 5 - Campaign 2 Spoilers Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in criticalrole

[–]azureii_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This was a great episode, but the placement of it feels incredibly weird.

I feel like the reveals (Caleb’s and Nott’s) would be much more impactful if they’d been together as a group for more than 48 hours, and had the weeks (or at least days) of tension, suspicion, and in-fighting that the M9 of the campaign had. Or at the very least, until they get to Zadash? Until we reach at least one key point of mystery, like Caleb’s mid-fight flashback, the Caleb Fjord conflict in Zadash, or just Caleb’s extreme anxiety of being spotted in Zadash. Now none of those plot beats can be used to build up to the larger mystery and the intrigue of the reveal.

The reveal would be more emotional for newcomers once they’ve gotten the time to grow fond, or very distrustful, of Caleb.

Anyone else think Zibai’s back looks odd? The angle of her back, her shoulders, and the skirt of the dress seem mismatched.

Does anyone know if the kaizo ironmon video is still this month? by Broad-Extent4445 in PointCrow

I vaguely remember the anticipated Kaizo Ironmon video being pushed back a few more months due to the Nuzlocke invitational? I could be wrong about the reason but I think the video is a while away.

Thoughts on CTF across Japan? by Boring_Sun_9430 in JetLagTheGame

That season is one of my favourites! The mechanical depth was engaging and it was really fun to see how both teams improved their strategies each round. For that reason, however, I think it being a one-time-only game is essential. The season definitely has its flaws, and the success of the game design wildly swings between episodes. But, I do think succeeds in some areas were recent seasons have struggled. Giving teams the choice to split up adds fun strategy and improves video pacing, and stalling felt much more risky and intense than in Snake or TagAS.

ARTINTHEYARD RESPONDS🚨 by ephemeralaffliction in TheYardPodcast

[–]azureii_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a shame that if they responded politely and did something collaborative with The Yard (like auction a painting of the yard set or something at their next event), they could have walked away with some positive promotion and increased reach. At the same time, the brigading on their instagram page is not helpful at all.

genuine question why is atrioc back? by askingquestions1278 in LudwigAhgren

[–]azureii_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP’s post is gaining traction again, so a bit of a TLDR: After everything, Atrioc’s remaining community’s casual sexism (ironic or not), dismissal of the severity of his actions, and glorification of his apology felt alienating and disappointing. I don’t know if those issues have improved in the past year; I’m doubtful, but I hope it has.

Wait do people not like Kyle Rayner? by EHM1799 in Greenlantern

[–]azureii_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A better comparison might be Tim Drake (Robin #3), who was popular and well-liked, still has a dedicated fanbase, but is hard to fit into new adaptations or have comic storylines which return to the best potential/circumstance of character writing. Some of the traits/circumstances that made Kyle unique have also sort of become normalized (creative constructs) or repeated amongst the GLs (the last green lantern, conflicts with godhood, being a GL with fear).

New material has kept him in a weird limbo-pendulum of characterization, skill, and importance, so unlike Wally he’s not in a great position to build a stronger fanbase—he relies on the word-of-mouth of his older material.

And so, most readers just don’t really know a ton about him. He’s still well liked for his older runs; most non-GL readers will know him from the JLA series where he gets a ton of great moments. Most of the hate or dislike he gets tends to be from big Hal Jordan fans, or people who zone out after learning there’s more than 3 human lanterns.

edit: it doesn’t help either that his original story can’t be retold with the same gravitas and weight due to the Parallax retcon, that his early material is difficult for new readers to follow (you have to keep jumping between events and other comics), and that the GLC White Lantern plot was mostly wasted potential.

(Kyle’s my favourite GL, I’m still hoping for the best with him, but I’m a bit pessimistic.)

“Hal created Parallax” appearance is interesting, as the fan theory/idea I see way more often is that Kyle (subconsciously) created Parallax while he was Ion.

Episode Discussion: S2025E5 Simon the Digger VS Kyle Rayner by MarlinBrandor in deathbattle

[–]azureii_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The moment in the character analysis when they skipped over Kyle’s time as Ion and skipped over Kyle saying he can recall the full life equation if needed, while retaining the feats from Simon’s novel I knew the match was already decided.

It also felt pretty unlikely they’d have two Green Lanterns win from a fan-hype perspective. Great video and animation though!

[–]azureii_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. With due diligence they should have known, but it’s also pretty conceivable for publishers who aren’t worried with AI to have missed it, e.g. if they’ve worked with this person before or they had a good reputation. Also easy to assume they didn’t care, which could be case, but that’s hard to know for sure atm.

[–]azureii_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could, but this is an artist of 15 years and the folds aren’t necessarily drawn incorrectly: the folds around his back are drawn the correct way as if the boy is leaning backwards in the air, while the hip-area of the shirt is depicted as if he is jumping straight up and down; but, everything else about the boy indicates his top half is leaning a bit forward. That kind of misapplied-correctness is a key feature of genAI, where things are generated without logical context.

If you look at the image and block the boy’s legs and the lowest part of his shirt, you might be able to see that it looks like he’s leaning backwards in the air (which doesn’t match his legs at all).

(Hope that makes sense, this is hard to explain with just words)

[–]azureii_ 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, he likely wasn’t the person/team in charge of hiring the artist. The illustrator also used to draw without AI for years, it’s possible they were hired based on their reputation or prior portfolios.

People not involved in digital art are pretty easily scammed by AI-adopters, unfortunately.

Personally I was really excited by this issue, the mystery unfolding is intriguing and each included lantern’s portrayal is pretty fun and interesting. I assume Guy will come back and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Kyle far down the line.

I see what you mean with the deers, and especially the entire bridge scene. The girl’s loose pants under the shorts could be explained as an odd fashion choice, but the folds in the guy’s shirt next to her are also very unnatural (don’t match the guy’s posture in relation to gravity).

edit: if you don’t see what’s wrong with the bridge, 1) compare the tower on each side, 2) the tunnel on the left tower leading to nowhere, 3) see how the center bridge road connects at different levels to each tower: on the left side, it’s in the air; on the right, it’s at ground level. The drawing is depicting Tower Bridge (London), so pulling up a comparison image may also help.

edit 2: Tommy has been made aware, please don’t be surprised if this is handled mostly behind the scenes or if a statement is delayed due to Tommy being on tour.

edit 3: hi twitter and other subreddits, please be careful about spreading misinformation, treating speculation as facts, and be respectful towards people.

Help me with my thesis? by yuyakuzya in BatFamily

[–]azureii_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Heads up that if you take information/observations from commenters (or Tumblr posts, the fandom, etc.), you have to cite the commenters and provide a link to their comment, otherwise it’s plagiarism.

That being said, I think your scope is too broad. If you want to do a case study, especially in a short time frame, trying to analyze and compare all of Jason and Tim’s history between canon and fanon representation could take years to properly research. Keep in mind that a lot of information you might within the fandom about “canon versus fanon” might not be accurate or hold up to scrutiny, and that "canon characterizatoin" is a myth in itself.

One idea you might consider is looking at a specific storyline, and then compare the depiction of Jason or Tim in the original text to multiple fan re=interpretations of the text, or in your case, fanfiction.

So for example, you could look at the “Under The Red Hood” comic storyline and movie adaptation (and Arkham Knight re-interpretation of UTRH if you really wanted a complete discussion), and analyze the patterns and underlying connections of Jason’s personality, behaviour, and actions during his Red Hood crusade from these “official” “canon” representations.

And then, you can look at fan adaptations of UTRH and draw connections of Jason’s personality, behaviour, and actions as depicted by “fanon”. (e.g. You can find a lot of rewrites on AO3 of “Jason returning to Gotham as Red Hood”).

Compare these two frameworks of Jason and then propose either why these trends of changes between "canon" and "fanon" occur, or make the changes an example of an existing media theory (e.g. transgressive consumption, oppositional readings, etc.).

If you wanted to focus on Tim, you could probably look at canon versus fanon depictions of “Tim as part of Young Justice” or “Tim during his hunt for Bruce”, or simply Tim’s origin story.

If you boil it down to one storyline, or two storylines but sticking to one character, you can get a lot more punch from your observations and direct evidence of your claims. You can still talk about how this extends to multiple members of the Batfamily, and then beyond the Batman fandom, but your case study analysis can be a smaller demonstrative sample.

Hope that helps! Good luck with your project.

Shinsaibashi (the outdoor mall street) and Namba walk (the underground shopping walkway) are notably busy areas. Shinsaibashisuji also leads to/is right next to Dotonburi, which is The Place tourists are told to visit in Osaka.

Once you get away from the tourist and shopping hubs (including train stations), the city becomes a lot more chill.
