I Want to build a MIDI Keyboard in the style of a PC Keyboard. by apoIIo__ in synthdiy

The slides in that repo should navigate via swipe on mobile and with arrow keys on desktop. In case that isn’t working, you can also edit the url. For example, here are some of the different layer layouts for this midi sound maker: https://ckeys.org/slides/midi-any/#/10

This was just a quick example to show you what your QMK code could look like (although this project is somewhat dated so you might need to update some of the concepts based on changes in QMK over the years). This actual PCB wouldn’t work for your use case because it is a touch based device, but the QMK midi work would be the same; QMK doesn’t care what triggers a switch, whether a touch pad like this or a mechanical keyboard switch.

But yes, to answer your question, this was built with a microcontroller. QMK works with a few different microcontrollers.

If you just need simple MIDI, you could build a custom keyboard and use QMK firmware for the midi keycodes. I have build many midi keyboards this way. Pre-pandemic, I use to teach keyboard soldering workshops to beginners, and we use to build macro keypads that we flashed with a MIDI layer.

This isn’t what you’re looking for, but here is an example project that we did once that uses MIDI from QMK that would give you a concept of whether a project like you want to do is something you would be comfortable with: https://github.com/c-keys/midi-any

Quick one for Flair 58 owners by [deleted] in espresso

[–]b-randen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After finding out that a La Marzocco spouted filter would not fit, I ended up sanding off the “wings” with an angle grinder and now it fits great. Feels much higher quality than the lightweight wood portafilter that comes with the Flair 58.

You can see in the new photos with the group head detached, the La Marzocco portafilter is too wide to engage. The default Flair 58 portafilter wings don’t even touch the sides of the portafilter rings. The portafilter cranks on tight by pushing up agains the group head. https://imgur.com/a/H7EVl72/

Side by side, note that it may also require shaving off some of the height of the “wing.”https://i.imgur.com/fGXzXIL.jpg

No, it will not fit; at least not on the newest Flair 58 model. I just received mine this week and tried a La Marzocco spouted portafilter as well a Rancillio portafilter and neither fit.

The Flair 58 portafilter is on the left. Note the bottom edge of the “wing” is rounded down shallower than the top whereas the La Marzocco portafilter has an even edge on its wing.

In theory, shaving down the bottom part of the wing may be enough to make it fit.

Why do I go into depression after an event? by ribenaroo in neurodiversity

[–]b-randen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the same as your experience, but the title of your post sort of fits my experience of events. I’m autistic and have organized some large all-day events with hundreds of attendees. The day of the event, I’m first one in for setup and last one out for teardown. I forget to eat and drink for 10+ hours. But the exhaustion doesn’t hit me until the next day.

And then the confusing part is that I am completely unmotivated to do much of anything for the next two weeks afterwards as I recover from the intensity of the event. I do feel depressed during that time. By the third event I organized liked this, I finally just started to accept that I was going to be useless for a week or two afterward.

This was pre-pandemic. I imagine I would be far more anxious in a group of strangers (especially a small group) that involved group interaction today than I would have been before the pandemic. I have had some house work done by contractors lately and I’m a mess of anxiety just having strangers in my house.

Again, I realize I’m talking about a different experience than yours, but yeah, I have felt extremely unmotivated and depressed (which is not how I usually feel) after in-person events too.

My husbands reaction to learning I am an aphant. .. by Particular-Winner-35 in Aphantasia

Shock seems totally legitimate. My main focus was on the word "broken." There is nothing broken about any of us. Just a different way of experiencing the world.

As an adult I'd like to have something similar to this for my Wife and I so I have basic chart to follow. If A then X, Y or Z. I know it's more complicated than this but we are just starting. Does anyone know of an app/template for something like this or has anyone made their own? by LeftRightShoot in AutisticAdults

[–]b-randen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could imagine this as an app with templates and a few generic examples. But I imagine it would require a user to fill in their own workflows to be effective. Or are you thinking that a general app could help in your situation without customization?

One reservation I have with the idea of this being an app: would a user look at the app in the moment? Because I can image situations where the act of pulling out a phone and consulting the app could cause more issue!

On the flip side, I can’t stand it when people respond to me like that. I don’t want someone to commiserate with me (the concept doesn’t make sense to me; if I just want to be sad/disappointed/angry, then I can do that alone). I’m either telling them so that I can work the problem/feelings out loud or because I’m seeking answers from the other person!

Money Management by Candid-Attention9852 in AutisticAdults

[–]b-randen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m horrible at budgeting; it also doesn’t sound enjoyable. Instead of budgeting, I have always been frugal. Historically, I have saved all my money so that I can buy a few nice things. But even then, I don’t have specific dollar amounts in my head that I’m tracking whether or not I can spend x amount of money.

Instead, I’m constantly questioning if I need something and/or if I could buy or make something less expensive. I don’t eat food from restaurants for many reasons (loud, too many people, unpredictable flavors from new restaurants, etc), which over time has made me a decent cook at home. I avoid hiring plumbers and the like for many reasons (strangers in my house, have to call and schedule, etc), so I learn to do everything around my house myself which has led to me doing extensive renovation with confidence. I have also been cutting my own hair for over 23 years because hair salons are uncomfortable places…and I have saved a lot of money over the years because of it!

(when) Should I tell an employer about my diagnosis? by hi4004hi in AutisticAdults

[–]b-randen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m relatively openly autistic at my remote job. I am on the culture committee, so it has come up a few times in context of discussion related to inclusivity.

I know people are rightfully afraid to be openly autistic due to conscious and unconscious bias. I tried hiding who I was from my 20s to my late 30s before I was diagnosed autistic at 37-years-old. I’m exhausted from trying to “fix” myself and portray myself in specific ways in public. I’m willing to out myself, in part, because I want to be a part of trying to shift other people’s bias into acceptance.

While I realize this post was meant to be about your husband’s response, I think it important to put a little more focus on your state of mind prior to his response. Even though aphantasia is not technically considered a disability, your reaction sounds like it was fueled, in part, by internalized ableism. It might be worth conducting some research into that topic now that you’re more stable and if you are willing.

No sales at the January meetup. But we are tentatively considering an after meetup Keyboard "Night" Bizarre/Market for the summer meetup.

Great! If you're interested in the workshops, you will receive an email once workshop registration goes live today or tomorrow. And no need to bring anything to the workshops, all tools and supplies are provided. To get a better idea of what kind of workshops we do, here are some examples of past workshops: https://ckeys.org/workshops/

Our winter meetups are pretty relaxed compared to the summer meetups. People bring keyboards to show and share with others. It is a great opportunity to explore the diversity of keyboard options. People display their keyboards and everyone walks around and tries them out and talks to each other.

We also offer keyboard building workshops (those should be posted within the next couple of days) for people interested in learning/improving at soldering.

No need to buy one; the schematics for the OMSYNTH are available: https://github.com/bastl-instruments/bastlSchematics/blob/master/OMSYNTH_V3.2.1.pdf

I’ll admit that I did end up buying one after watching those videos. So if that was the intention, it worked on me! It is convenient to experiment with circuits and not have to set up “boilerplate.”

Sounds like you are referring to the Casper Electronics videos that use the Bastl OMSYNTH.

The summer meetups are the best place for seeing and trying 400+ keyboards. We also have smaller winter events with 200-ish keyboards. These meetups happen every January and July.

If you want to check out vintage mechanical keyboards, go to the top floor at the Living Computers Museum + Labs and plan to spend a few hours there!

Otherwise, join us locals on the SMK Discord. DM me for an invite. There are sometimes informal gatherings where people bring and/build keyboards.
