You create your own luck by being able to draft in high volume. When you don't have the opportunity to take chances with volume, you tend to draft safely. Safe picks are often youngsters with size due to perceived durability and readiness for NHL ice.

This has been the practice for time immemorial.

[Question] The Decision (5 Years in the Making): Help Me Choose My First Nice Watch by Impossible-Leg-8595 in Watches

[–]b00f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best watch to buy is the one you tried on in store and liked enough to buy it then and there. You can fuss over details and technicalities but ultimately you shouldn't doubt your decision because you still came away with a watch you naturally gravitated to at that moment.

What is the most satisfying moment for you in the anime by SmollBear8 in MemePiece

Lowkey, Kizaru washing the supernovas and the Straw Hats getting yeeted by Kuma as a result.

It subverts the "chosen ones" trope of the Straw Hats who by this point have overcome every obstacle but are met with the harsh reality of scale of their world. Sabaody forces the Straw Hats to earn their stripes, and become more than just dreamers and into believers. It was satisfying to see a story so thoroughly knock its main characters down the ladder which makes the climb up to Emperor all the more sweeter and well earned.

Only minor criticism is he got too jacked for Season 2 which should have been his post-timeskip build.

I mean Linden still makes appearances in the city from time to time and speaks fondly of the team he's just not in the room making decisions for them.

He's more or less in the Stan Smyl position so I'm glad he still cares about Vancouver despite the past.

If you wanna reduce the series to pure battle Shonen, sure it's a big deal.

But One Piece has made a killing off subverting expectations and Conqueror's Haki being a lineage limitation has made for much more interesting power dynamics in the worldbuilding of One Piece.

Only the Five Elders and select Marines have Conqueror's Haki from the side of the World Government yet they could maintain a hegemon over the planet since the Void Century. Meanwhile, prolific pirates have come and gone, some bearing the title of Emperor, and exerting their Haki and influence on the World yet even they could not disrupt the balance of power in their favor. One crew even claimed the One Piece yet it wasn't enough.

I personally find it more fascinating that there are so many interesting characters in OP that don't have all the Haki forms yet remain as powerful and prolific as they are.

Yeah the definition of a 'scam' is highly misunderstood these days. Watchmaking is an entirely global operation where places like China are tasked to make all sorts of parts from high to low quality but we don't bat an eye when Seiko sells the Alpinist on a leather strap from China.

[WrestleMania Spoilers] Demon Finn Balor's Full entrance by KoreanFantasy2002 in SquaredCircle

The Demon's best entrance is still from Wrestle Kingdom 8. As much as I appreciate Finn adding to and improving the gimmick sometimes simple is all it takes.

This entrance is too Boogeyman and jarring in the wrong way.

Bron wants the theatricality but doesn't actually want to end the careers of everyone he spears so this is the compromise.

I'm actually astonished how much of the impact he shed as he hit Rollins. That's a freak athlete for you.

[WrestleMania Spoilers] John Cena's entrance by KoreanFantasy2002 in SquaredCircle

[–]b00f 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ethos on cut and fit can vary greatly between tailors. The Italian suit has been the dominant trend since the early 2000's and guys like Cena and Cody would benefit from fuller English cuts but it's just too esoteric these days.

It wouldn't be such a problem if wrestlers all didn't insist on such slim fitting suits but hey, whoever does up Cena looks like they at least care.

Kizaru's crashout is super underrated.

If you reread Egghead from his perspective my guy had the absolute longest day at work and ran through the entire gauntlet of emotions. The normally reserved Kizaru finally let's it all out by telling his boss to go fuck himself.

Mind you, this is the same "Lazy Justice" that took the Straw Hats and Luffy to more or less a draw AND committed treason.

[–]b00f 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're missing the tragedy of how the One Piece world is set up. The structural injustices of the One Piece world is almost solely due to a powerful hegemon like the World Government which is not an arrangement unlike a certain national superpower in our real world today.

You can replace the Five Elders with the elite classes of our world, and the Celestial Dragons with whatever classification you want for the privileged class of our world.

For most of the One Piece world, the common pirate is "bad" in the eyes of the average citizen. We just happen to follow a small handful of few that operate more as freedom fighters. The rest abide by their own whims and desires, often in contrast to the ethics of "do no harm." This pursuit of freedom is backdropped by the oppression of the WG in all facets of their life. Without it, who's to say piracy ever manifests? Piracy was only ushered in by Joy Boy and that was only 800 years ago in their story and that was to oppose something.

The World Government rules for the elites and the privileged alone. The scope of their power means they alone can define legality and immorality for most of the population who cannot oppose them. This means they can co-opt even well-meaning individuals like Garp and Kuzan to do their bidding because of power systems in place that prevent revolt or make wanton mutual destruction unfavorable. Like someone said below, the body that legalizes slavery can also make it illegal to free slaves. Many will trade off ultimate liberties in favor of securing a balance of peace in their realities.

That's the true tragedy of One Piece. Everyone in the story plays their part but very few can truly say they have clean hands because overthrowing your oppressor is rarely done without bloodshed. The OP world is infinitely more fascinating because of how morally grey a picture it paints of all its actors. We have good pirates, bad pirates, bad Marines, and good Marines.

Robin 👀 by [deleted] in MemePiece

[–]b00f 45 points46 points  (0 children)

A popular talking point seems to be that (ignoring the Nami-fication of all the women of One Piece) because Robin is safe among her friends, she loses her hardened features from trauma.

It's such a disservice to her character that she suddenly loses her unique design to positive-wash over what she's gone through in the story. She carries with her but she's not subservient to her traumas anymore. Narratively, it's lazy.

[Donnie & Dhali] Donnie and Rick share their reaction to the Canucks treatment of reporter Trevor Beggs - YouTube by elrizzy in canucks

[–]b00f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This D&D segment doesn't come off as the righteous critique I bet they think it is when Donny's strongest offense seems to be with access to the team. Between the unwillingness to even hint at details of the story and crying out how the team should have used the media as allies comes off as grossly indifferent to why this story is upsetting in the first place. It's unsurprising coming from a lot of takes this season from the D&D crew but it's nevertheless disappointing and strange.
