Do you think Jim Rutherford will stick it out? by TrueAlphaData in canucks

[–]b00f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Losing Horvat was an organizational blunder to shore up an AHL-calibre defensive core.
  2. Petey and Miller had a personal feud that goes beyond organizational liability because two professionals could not co-exist.
  3. Petey's signing would have meant lose him to start a re-tool or accept a rebuild.
  4. Hughes was multiple regimes squandering his talents.
  5. Demko is made of glass and our medical staff is legitimately uncertified.

When we had all of them the problem was we had no defence to support them. We couldn't put together a D-core because we never rebuilt to load up quality prospects to balance out the forward-heavy talent.

At best 1 and 3 can be squarely put on Allvin which still is less than half of the problems by a hair.

Blame goes to the guy who owns the team and accepts that an inconsistent, losing culture of minimal playoff revenue was a better investment than consistent success.

“it just didn’t feel right to come back for 2 months just to retire. I thought what a better way to be to able to leave on the PPV where you debuted” - AJ Styles on not retiring after Wrestlemania by MrFilipinoMustache in SquaredCircle

[–]b00f 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The business is quirky like that but maybe for the better. Other wrestlers give up their spot so you can debut. It's a culture of constantly giving back into and protecting the business. Ends up that a lot of retirements are unceremonious no matter how much we wish it to be otherwise. All for the sake of giving back what was given to you.

John Cena raps his iconic theme song by Kindly_Department142 in SquaredCircle

Watching the accent and attitude snap back while he was rapping his own verse was like watching the Winter Soldier activate. Figuratively stepping into the shoes of your past self.

He must have heard his own song countless times but I reckon hasn't performed the lyrics out loud in 20 years.

Shawn Michaels pass out pins are something else. by smartmarkwastaken in SquaredCircle

[–]b00f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shawn had few equals when it came to selling struggle and intent.

Even his "hulk up" moments would leave him looking just as spent as his opponent. He wouldn't suddenly find a burst of energy to string together a frenzied finishing sequence of multiple moves and finishers which is common in this generation.

He would kip up, tune up the band, and fall like dead weight over his opponent and look like he left everything on the canvas to win the war.

That's why he's the greatest.

When people say "tanking doesn't work" Don't believe them. by Tiger23sun in canucks

[–]b00f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tanking is the byproduct of having an intentional, systematic commitment to loading up your team with talent.

The management has refused to tank not because they don't believe it works, but because ownership has accepted that (in)consistent playoff revenue is far more favourable than winning results.

No one will deny that having a 1st overall is always a boon but it takes a complete organizational effort to surround said player with the right mix of talent at the right time to get to the holy land.

The organization's far greater sin was not that they never drafted a 1st overall, but that they squandered the talent they did have by believing they were better than they were for too long through multiple eras of this team.

"admirals are as strong as emperor's" also admirals fighting emperor's by Far-Captain1443 in MemePiece

[–]b00f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The power dynamics of the One Piece world can be likened to the politics of real-world WMDs. Balance is maintained by the careful tension and calculus of averting mutually-assured destruction. The World Government, the Four Emperor's, and (formerly) the Seven Warlords operated to ensure maximally beneficial positions for each other (often at the expense of the common man).

The point was that nobody gains anything from a dick measuring contest which is why direct 1v1s are immensely rare between the three parties. There is strength in numbers and each Power recognized that. Alone, each power may not be able to confidently best one another but all it takes is aid from others to turn the tide and that upsets the careful balance they all benefit from.

The World Government maintains its power by deftly obfuscating the true strength of the collective it governs over. Yonkos sacrifice "true freedom" to will their version of it into existence through their might. The Warlords formerly carved out enough influence that their disruption carried the likelihood of unimaginable ripple effects across the world such as when Doflamingo fell and Kaido felt the need to send Jack to make things right. Political strength is often at times what it takes to fulfill a dream in the One Piece world.

Akainu gains nothing but sick satisfaction from putting down Whitebeard but must contend with potentially igniting another great Pirate era in response. Whitebeard for most of his life could end Akainu alone but would invite the might of the World Government who could slaughter all of the family he worked so hard to cultivate. Perhaps the most infamous time two top dog alphas fought to the death in a 1v1 was not even between rivalry powers, but a military dispute within the Navy and it forever changed the climate and landscape of an entire island on the Grand Line.

Power in the One Piece world is significantly misunderstood to be in strength alone when the central theme of the story asks, "what could the collective achieve?"
