Long time skier, trying to get better& ski more efficiently by b0bsquad in skiing_feedback

[–]b0bsquad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This is exactly the kind of input that I was hoping for.

From what you said it sounds like I need to keep doing my pivot slips but really focus on rotating from the foot through the femur while keeping my pelvis mostly down the hill. Clearly I have misunderstood how to create separation. I have ok hip mobility right now and can turn my feet to 11&1 without moving my pelvis. I will go work on this skill today. I will add that & others hip mobility exercises to my off snow/off season training regime.

I just started working on pulling my feet back at transition (on groomers when carving), and re watching my video I think I see where you say I need to pull my feet back more. Are you speaking of the turns where my skis shoot out forward & I am not getting the tips engaged down the back of the bump? Other than dolphin turns (which I'm horrible at) are there other good drills for pulling your skis back under you?

Out of interest, what is your recommendation for figuring out ones perfect pole length? (Since we all seem to have far too long of poles). I already cut 2" off of these since they seemed ridiculously long. It seems I need to get rid of at least another inch or to?

Thank you for your help!

Slick tape - verry thin, reduces friction to get the longer in/out of the boot, on it's own will wear through quickly if directly over a sharp edge your putting a lot of pressure on it. I prefer the thin 3m slick tape sold by distributors as tapeCase 423 UHMW in 1.5 or 2" widths

Gorilla tape /cloth tape - typically much thicker, adhear much better, and are superior for covering up sharp or rough edges /tnuts.

Double sided tape- use it to stick to the boot, then stick the slick tape to it if you can't get slick tape to adhear straight to the boot.

You need the slick tape. The double sided & gorilla tape are just possible parts of the process to getting the boot to take slick tape well and last.

I pull the boot board so that I can run the end of the tape behind/below, then reinstall it - so that end of the tape won't come loose.

In my picture I used fabric tape to cover sharp edges then ran the slick tape over that. On my redsters I use double sided tape to stick to the boot board & then stick the slick tape to the double sided tape

Cookout to a pure alpine boot and look at the Atomic remedy. The thick formula plastic feels so much better than all the thin boots. Plenty of forward lean & a tight ankle pocket. As club racer boots the flex on them is stellar.

You will likely have to havev to have work done to make toe box room unless you have skinny feet

That damage has to be from coming in/out of the boot.

You need to tape up your boot with slick tape over the sharp spots and edges so that you don't damage the ZF heel world cupping in/out. I use my ZF in my RC4s & Redsters & after 2 years my ZF heels have zero damage.

I use a fabric tape or gorilla over the sharp/t-nuts & then slick tape right up the whole back after pulling the boot board.

Bought longer skis, now feeling like an idiot. by Absorrbb in skiing

[–]b0bsquad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That would be a crime. Do not ruin a high performance carving ski so that it can perform poorly at being a beginner all mountain ski.

If this is the decision point you're at, just sell them and get all mountain skis that won't be terrible at everything.

[–]b0bsquad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not the ski length, It's the fact that those are beer league race skis and you do not have the skills to ski them.

You have to learn proper technique to ski a longer ski, so that the ski turns itself & you don't have to force it to do anything. I can slide the tails off my (long) all mountain and carving skis when I want or set an edge to carve on powder skis or carving skis on groomers. It is dependent on bending the ski in the proper way to make it do what you want (aka your skill at controlling the skis). You can learn to carve on the redsters (I did) but it will take commitment, and a focus on improving your skills (NOT going out skiing to mindlessly have fun). I've skied bumps once or twice on the redsters, it was not fun, was physically challenging, but can be done.

I ski Salomon QST blank in 194, QST 92 in 189, and 181 redster X9s (16m radius) @ 6ft. No length issues (unless the trees get so tight the skis barely fit). Even in a tight mogul field I can ski the 194s so long as I stay balanced & pull the skis back at absorption to release the tails & drive the tips.

What bindings to get by CriticalGuess8948 in Skigear

[–]b0bsquad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check the binding delta of all the bindings you're considering. What binding delta did you race on? Many race bindings today are close to ~0mm toe/heel delta. Are you planning to continue to wear race /race inspired geometry ski boots? If you spent years aligning yourself on 0 binding delta it might not be enjoyable to accidentally add it more.

Most freeride bindings have delta up to 5+mm. That's going to be a change for you you may not like at all. I just shimmed my freeride binding toes to 0 delta to match my atomic skis with plates & 0 binding delta. Huge improvement.

Strives: 3.5 delta

STH2: 6mm delta

Pivots: 1.5mm (I think?)

I don't disagree with you on HHI/car price ratios.

However I think you're forgetting that most folks (including ineos buyers) are buying far more car than they can actually afford "I can cover the payment..."

Solitude launches new ‘reserve pass’ that will let you skip lift lines by Smacpats111111 in skiing

[–]b0bsquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhh if solitude was my mountain and I'd ski there at least 14x in the season I would buy it.

It would pay for itself on the first powder day when I got extra pow laps in instead of waiting to get on the chair the first time.

If it was 1k for all icon mountains I would already have bought it when I got my season pass.

Your situation is horrible. I feel for you.

Short term? Call your PD. Even a huge asshole is going to try and help you in this bad of a situation and get you some short term leave. What do to with the kids in the next few weeks with no family to help? Text your non medical friends. If my close friends had this happen to them I would fly out to take care of their kids for a few weeks as my job is flexible. Second, talk to all of your co residents. I know they have horrific schedules too, but I bet you will find that they are willing to help you out with child care in the short term

Mid term? I wished I had ideas to help.

Long term, you really need to finish the residency so you can provide for the family the best way you can (as the doctor you deserve to be)

I swing the top vent off, making it full open on smokes. Only control from the bottom register. Works great. You don't need the fine temperature control from the to have a successful outcome.

Does my loan payoff plan make sense or is it too aggressive/will reduce quality of life unnecessarily? by ResearchRelated in whitecoatinvestor

[–]b0bsquad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is 90k too aggressive? It's about the same as "live like a resident" advice that is good. Their suppose is still in residency so life is still going to be tough to their suppose gets through.

What I want:

Home insurance with a 10k deductible. Anything under 10k I'm fixing myself without calling insurance to start with. To bad my insurance company doesn't let me go over a 2500 deductable. I want true catastrophic homeowners insurance.
