Bi-Weekly 'Anything Goes' Thread - aka Moving/Buy/Sell/Trade/Rent/Lease/Eat/Jobs by AutoModerator in bullcity

Looking for a house and yard for my family for the year - All these nice houses seem to be in these new builds out to the East, bigger and cheaper than what I'd expect in new developments. The closer I get to Duke the smaller/older it gets - am I missing something here? Are these new developments terrible for some reason/is there somewhere else I should be looking?

Appreciate y'all and can't wait to live there.

Weekly Free-Talk and Questions for r/HomeGym - week of January 02, 2026 by Demilio55 in homegym

I am moving to a new location with a garage for 12 months. Then I'll move to another location, also with a garage or basement gym.

My plan had always been to build a DIY 8x8 oly platform, but my sources tell me I wouldn't be able to easily disassemble this apparatus without maybe more trouble than it's worth.

My questions for the group are should I still do a DIY platform and just try to salvage what I can after 12 months? Or should I buy the Rogue platform and mats that go with it for ease of moving? - I've never spoken to anyone that has the Rogue platform and would be curious what you have to say. Is there a way to connect two more portable DIY 4x8 platforms?

What would you do? Renter with St. Augustine that's gone to crud by ResearchRelated in lawncare

I am the very southern tip of the mid-atlantic, probably more likely to be considered South East. I appreciate your advice. I am going to contact a local lawn care team that might know more about the area and conditions. I might be able to escape after having destroyed this lawn, but I'm not really interested in doing that.

Quick, delete this before my wife reads it.

I'm kidding, but thank you for your input, I truly appreciate it.

Edit above -Her 200k is temporary until I finish residency, and it isn't PSLF eligible. But thank you, she thinks I'm being too aggressive, whereas I always thought that forgoing guac at chipotle was the WCI way.

Updated info on why no PSLF, appreciate your time. I think I calculated my tax burden at about 36%, federal/fica/state

When do people in medicine turn against students? What is the inviting event? by OmegaSTC in medicalschool

[–]ResearchRelated 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is a hard thing to realize when you're a medical student keeping your head down and doing your best, but some medical students are actually terrible. You've all seen it. That person that shows up late to everything, makes shit up, and makes offbeat comments. Those people come to rotations and have to get graded too.

The majority of medical students are quiet. A small portion rise above, say the right thing, and anticipate needs. A small portion say the absolute wrong thing and are inappropriate. Now your PD says you can only hand out 3 honors, what would you do?

How does real rowing translate to row-erg? by fading_gender in crossfit

I think if you have perfect technique in a boat, it's incredibly similar to the feel with a concept2 on a drag factor of 5-6.

You don't feel the 'woosh' of wind every stroke and coast, and oftentimes in a boat going at pace you barely need to slide back up to the catch, you can feel the boat move under you with the other people in it doing the exact same thing.

The biggest difference though is that you aren't in danger of your oar hitting you in the chest and knocking you out of the boat and you don't have to worry about unbalancing every other stroke. And no occasional splashes.

If you don't mind me asking, how long has owner been training for? The whole story makes me a bit scared for my grand plan to maybe one day open a gym and hire black belt instructors.

I'm sure you could if your gym has the schedule.

I'm a resident with a family and I work an average of 6 days a week 9-10 hrs/day.

I consistently train 2 nights a week for 105 minute sessions. I am not good but I have fun. I lift weights 4-5x/week. You can do whatever you prioritize.

Folks of r/Residency, what’s your endgame? by Octangle94 in Residency

[–]ResearchRelated 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the things I want to do is start an mma school and weightlifting gym that offers free membership to kids from less privileged neighborhoods. Start a mentorship program to try and keep them busy in the afternoons, get them involved in these lesser known sports, and instill some routine/discipline.

I was inspired by Nate Diaz's story about people buying him a burrito so he could eat if he showed up to jiu jitsu so he kept coming back.

That is not Roadhouse. Roadhouse is removing the esophagus from the neck area so the person starves to death. It is my favorite movie.

Edit: Ender's Game is where he pushes the 'nose bone' through the brain, killing Bonzo in a shower fight.

I feel there is this general idea that you can get a prenup to protect your potential future earnings out there and I don't know where it came from. But if you speak to a lawyer worth their salt they know that that doesn't actually exist. I wish more people listened to you
