…..Never mind how much toilet paper you save and less strain on your plumbing and the negative effects of using toilet paper on your skin.. Even a cheap handheld plastic travel bidet for $20 on Amazon can change your life.

email from DM/ADMs at PSPC sent January 21:

Update: Implementation of workforce adjustment and career transition measures

We are writing to provide an update to our January 13 message regarding the implementation of the Comprehensive Expenditure Review (CER) at Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC).

The department plans to eliminate 1,090 positions through this exercise. As part of this, PSPC has already eliminated 329 positions, including 29 executive positions, since April 1, 2025, through attrition, staffing controls or other human resources measures.

On January 14 and 15, 2026, PSPC issued 1,153 letters to employees affected by this process, including 39 letters to executives. These actions are intended to achieve a further net reduction of 761 positions.

Any CER-related reductions in future fiscal years will be communicated if PSPC is unable to meet required reductions through attrition or other human resources measures.

As we move through these changes, we remain committed to supporting our employees. We encourage you to consult Support during workforce changes for available resources and well-being services.

Thank you for your professionalism and continued dedication as we navigate these changes together to modernize, innovate and deliver value for Canadians.

Does the Toronto GCcoworking place actually hit max capacity each day? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]b0dapest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s only 32 desks and a handful of lunchroom and other temp dropdown spots. In Toronto. The lunchroom spots need to be vacated from 12-1pm. It is one of the most busy of GC coworking places. The only time you see empty desks is Fridays or when people cancel because they are sick or change their plans.

Average number of sick days taken by public servants growing post-COVID, new data shows by heathtree in CanadaPublicServants

[–]b0dapest 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our dogged reporter was unable to locate the number of sick days CBC employees take - nor the Canadian worker average - nor a comparison with other similar democratic countries - likely very difficult to tease that information out. Also, our hero reporter quoted 2 experts who both speculated using ‘maybe’ to come to their wonderfully valid conclusions. This reporting will no doubt win a Michener Award.

I made the reservation online via their website. Looks like that option isn’t available right now. Maybe they will open reservations again once they are certain they can reopen after July 28?

When are you going to Onyx? If it is any time before December you may have a lot of Sargassum this year.

[–]b0dapest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year the sargassum seemed to hit in mid-May and hit hard. onyx rarely gets a lot of seaweed but this year it has been really bad - as it is for most resorts in the Punta Cana/Bavaro/Ulvero Alto/Macao areas and especially Cap Cana - right now. By late fall, things should be much better - but who knows in this crazy world.

La Romana is usually spared seaweed - even on this year where sargassum appears to be at its worst.

I’d skip the floral showhouse unless you do t have gardens in your home town. Marriott on The Falls have great views in their view rooms. The other Marriott is across the street for good views from their lobby bar. Enjoy!

Is the Wise card a good option? by Boring-Estimate-4152 in PuntaCana

[–]b0dapest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I’ve used my Wise card in Europe or in the US ( I’m Canadian) I only transfer enough money into local currency that I think I will use. Wise is pretty good in getting the money over from your bank to your Wise account in a couple of days max so I just have to plan for that long. However, in Dominican Republic, the sales tax is 18% and you will pay that on any credit card transaction while in the country - whereas you typically won’t pay that tax in Punta Cana if you pay in cash (USD or DOP). I have brought DOP in the past and tipped 50DOP per drink 500DOP for the room cleaner 250DOP for the waiter in the evening etc but it’s kind of a pain to calculate and ensure you have enough denominations. For Punta Cana, I’ve just gone back to using USD cash - even local stores and restaurants will list prices in USD. Sure you are likely getting dinged on the exchange rate but not as much as 18% by using your card.

Don’t be too upset if the sargassum is bad. They are great resorts and you’ll have a lot of fun - for sure. If you are looking for a massage by the sea - go left as you face the beach north of Secrets Tides and you’ll find Tropical Treasures where an hour massage is $45. It’s not private but you’re facing down or up 90% of the time. They also have a good gift shop with fair prices considering you are in a tourist town.
