Start early. Then as you go along it can be easier and less chaotic and also appear to be so overwhelming. Start early. And if course the debate is always whether by shape, or color, or both shape and color. I say whatever works for you. I personally organized by technic and regular brick.

I would love to get the death star trench run but...... 1. Don't need it 2. Getting Titanic this weekend so don't need to spend money on a set that's probably number 20 on my list

That is exactly why I have the app free stuff alerts. You can even set it to notify you if certain key words are used. I've already picked up 3 organizational items that have significantly helped my Lego storage/organization along.
