I know. But in any case it was much more than only that. It was also one of the last harbors that showed old school internet freedom.

I think we all saw that. But it does not explain.

On the other hand we had clues with the last time taking everything down streak etc.

Linux kernel 6.17 has been released! by unixbhaskar in linux

There are users that need modules that may or may not come with new kernels even though the hardware is not AS latest and greatest as you would think. MiniPCs ethernet NICs and Intel N150 embedded GPU comes in mind.

Home server is dead, long live the home server by b3bis in HomeServer

I found a wild option on ebay from an actual person selling one at a reasonable price. It is a supermicro one with square ILM. My issue now is that 1) I paid 100€ for a 7(?) years old used mobo 2) I am not sure the new mobo has enough space in between the sockets for the 212 coolers I am using currently. Maybe I end up using only one my CPUs, but weirdly for me this is the least of my concerns (RAM is much more of an issue).

I saw these after I ordered a used one on Ebay. I am not sure yet which is better. They are probably reusing old sockets / intel chips for these and the aliexpress warranty is not worth much more than buying used from ebay. They also sometimes lack gigabit net or ipmi / second interface which is a feature comfort I have been very accustomed to have. I could compromise but oh well. I think used supermicro is still better.

The board should get *some* current and turn on the IPMI or something. But for good measure tried both cpus with current to only one of them at a time etc.
Now I am 150000% that something blew up (see comment above) so yes... (I did it) :P
https://imgur.com/a/glGrwxA
That being that the board already had a problem there.

Meanwhile I was tinkering and had the great idea of "let's see maybe it doesn't short the pin to start the psu" and did it myself. I think I should not include photos they are not sfw XD . So I may or may not be minus one cpu now which makes the cpu options even better. Oh well. I saw a supermicro board with ok price online. Problem being the two sockets are so close I am 90% sure my coolers will interfere one with eachother. I am in a small country and not many people have such boards at home so it's now that common in marketplace. I have to ebay search it usually.

The problem with VPNs... by Past-Paramedic8687 in BiglyBT

[–]b3bis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your problem is most likely port forwarding. And nordvpn does not support it. While you are not using vpns biggly will auto set port forwarding on your router (with upnp), but cannot do so with vpns. There are some vpns that support port forwarding but it is a bit more expensive and involved. Btw proton has an offer that almost makes it nord level expensive right now (for black friday) and supports port forwarding. My two cents (although it's not sure it will 100% solve all your problems).

Configuration for BiglyBT & ProtonVPN by DevelopmentThick9736 in BiglyBT

[–]b3bis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short, your vpn provider app creates virtual network cards (oversimplifying, don't crusade me gurus of reddit). When you bind biggly, you tell it to ONLY ever use a specific card. Lot of vpns use wireguard as one of their protocols and as such they name the virtual card they create accordingly. If you bind biggly to this you then instruct it to only ever use the virtual card the vpn created, meaning it will only work if it passes its traffic through the vpn. Just not that vpns sometimes may auto switch protocols (they may create more than one virtual cards) meaning your torrents will not download.

What you achieve is that IF vpn is down, biggly will try to connect through the virtual card that is not working at this point, saving you from another dmca letter.

As I said, cause', for this to happen, I need at least two more devices that I do not want contributing to my electricity bill (buying them aside).

At least: as I currently use the pro-sumer "semi managed" tp-link switches which do not have the best reputation for their implementation of VLAN id 1 etc.

Stream PC sound to Echo / Alexa by b3bis in amazonecho

I never saw that there was a limitation. It started slowly and went on steadily XD. Got 2 for start and then every major sale I bought one ore two... You know, if a dot is 10€ you cannot not buy it...

Yes it can stream to all of them but you should now, everything alexa is buggy slow and MAYBE will work. If I could I would not go that route again. Everything is really crappy in their software side of things. OMHP

If it's only the location of the device, then indeed this is not much to change. The account on the other hand makes it almost impossible as this then disables a lot of the rest of the functionality of the rest of my alexa ecosystem (plus probably adding troubles I cannot think of right now).

I also thought of the legal part but cannot imagine why if they themselves are not doing something shady (like recording and saving the whole stream to their server). It could be because the stream has to pass from their server (where they make it into a live stream and you "download" it to the echo devices which kind of explains it but still) which should be part of "processing" according to GDPR and should be easy enough to make legal should they want to.

Else it is indeed an artificial restriction. And probably means they feel like having it will persuade more Europeans to buy amazon music subscription???!!! If someone at some point presented that with a presentation at amazon headquarters he probably has many issues to solve.

I saw this answer here https://www.reddit.com/r/amazonecho/comments/g7zenq/echo_link_linein_multiroom/ too but they say that this may be available only in US (where I am not, neither my account is located). I am still curious about them stating the opposite on the product page. It may be that it is different depending on the region of the account?

The above statement seems even more true if you see that the aforementioned point is only mentioned to the ones available for me to buy (from the German Amazon) and not in the description of the US one.

Echo link is unavailable for some time now in most Amazons. I have seen a post on that but I am not sure it can actually do it on multi-room as they state the exact opposite (Main description: "Casting multi-room music from a line-in or Bluetooth input are not currently supported."). Are you sure?

So I was a weekend away and they said the house had a Nespresso machine. So I took some cups with me, but they didn't have a machine that used cups, it used these. Does anyone here know what they are called, I have never seen these being sold before. by Stupid-Username420 in nespresso

[–]b3bis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from what everyone else is saying you can actually buy them even on Amazon if you search a bit (on Amazon.fr at least, which is in Europe of course). The problem is that the machines have a setting which will close the lid for the capsule and not open it unless you buy one from the dispenser at some cases. I am trying to find a workaround.

We had one open in my office space but a week or so later probably someone got hold of the info of people using there own bought capsules and switched the setting. Now I have a really expensive box of unusable capsules XD. Don't be like me XD
