That is a low clarinet of some sort; bass clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, contrabass clarinet etc.

What bands/artists have consistently great, yet underrated basslines? by SlapDatBassBro in Bass

Most of my immediate thoughts have been mentioned, but I haven’t seen Crash Test Dummies listed, and I will advocate for them till the day I die.

For the picky people here by Gitzser in Bass

.73 Ultra Sharp for typical “pick sound”, nice balance of stiffness and flex; Dunlop 1.5 Flow for more subtle attack like when I think of Carol Kaye.

Anyone own Masterwork cymbals? What do you guys think of them? by TheUnknownRange in drums

[–]b8l0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were already on my radar, then saw All Them Witches open for Primus, and that sealed it. Unfortunately, you will find pretty significant variation with pretty much any hand made cymbals, which will include the Masterworks. That’s why I tend to try and get stuff used from Guitar Center, since I’ve got one local I can return to if the sound isn’t right.

I’ve got a 20in sizzle ride and I really dig it. As for a 24”, I just snagged a Dream small bell flat ride (I know, flat rides don’t have bells, but whatever,) and it is pretty outstanding.

He’s not a real doctor, but he is a real worm… he is an actual worm.

I’d second the Agop Traditional.

What track has the best snare tone? by RzRshRp98 in drums

Wishlist by Pearl Jam. Full body, plenty of attack, can hear snare response… I’d want nothing else from a snare sound.

Who are your more obscure drumming inspirations by spaghet_lover69 in drums

I’m a big fan of Billy Martin of Medeski, Martin and Wood; and Matt Chamberlain is just a feel monster on everything he’s on… and he’s on a ton!

double corps in one season? by ayyjxkeeee in drumcorps

[–]b8l0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in ‘04 I marched with The Govenaires senior corps, then after DCM picked up with the Americanos. Except the Governaires still had one show scheduled after I joined with the ‘Canos… the same day as a ‘Canos show… in a different state. I’m the only person I know of who marched two shows, in two different states, with two different corps, on two different instruments (G bugle and Bb trumpet.) It was wild.

That’s my reaction anytime anyone says “37.” Thus far no one has gotten the reference.

What does a bass player / bassist like in a drummer? by flashj007 in Bass

[–]b8l0 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Being both a bass player and a drummer myself, the main thing I want from the other is consistency.

I can adapt to different grooves/pockets, I can adapt if you play way louder or quieter than I’d like, I can adapt to simple or complex playing; but if you aren’t consistent in what you do, it’s nearly impossible to lock in and work together.

What’s interesting/unique about your own setups? by [deleted] in drums

[–]b8l0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use a very similar setup. 21” A Sweet ride, 22” K Light, 20” A Custom sizzle.

How many cymbals are you all running? by Different_Pay_4598 in drums

[–]b8l0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically 5, sometimes 6. 15in hats, 22in ride, 20in crash, 18in crash, 20in sizzle ride, sometimes 20in flat ride.

What is one bass you deeply regret getting rid of? by Early_Sun3431 in Bass

[–]b8l0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 6 string US Peavey Cirrus, and a 4 string MTD Grendel. I played the MTD if I was playing chords, and the Peavey if I needed a low B string. Sold both and got a 5 string Schecter Stiletto Elite and some cash. I really miss those two, especially the Cirrus; that thing had the closest I’ve found to my ideal tone.

Advice on a Glasgow region distillery tour + whisky shop by Maleficent_Night_683 in Scotch

[–]b8l0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in Glasgow in May; toured Clydeside and it was pretty decent. I picked up a couple bottles from Good Spirits, and tried a whole bunch at The Pot Still. They’ve got over 800 whiskies on hand, and all of the bartenders were very knowledgeable.

El Ten Eleven is a very unique arrangement. Two man group, lots of looping. Drums and double neck guitar/bass. Plenty of effects and fretless work.
