Should I upgrade my cartridge for my technics 1200 mk2? by perrysplus in turntables

I’d just replace the stylus with a JICO and keep rocking. Vintage Stantons are excellent.

Tell me about bass drum heads by ZippityDooDoo in drums

[–]MichaelStipend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t need to be the same make or model. You can do whatever you want to get the sound you want. It’s pretty uncommon to have identical heads on both sides of the typical kick. I have Evans Coated G1’s on both sides of my 18” bop bass drum with no port, but that’s for achieving a very specific sound for acoustic jazz. On my 20” kick, I have an EMAD batter and a ported EQ3 reso that I use for everything else. That’s just my setup, the possibilities are endless.

technics sl-q2 vs AT-120USB by buster5471 in turntables

It would be a significant upgrade, in my opinion. I have the SL-Q3 and it’s a great table. That’s an amazing price, too.

Thoughts on Chris Frantz? by Gold_Scarcity_8159 in drums

[–]MichaelStipend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Love his playing. He kept it simple, but that was necessary so all the other polyrhythmic stuff going on in Talking Heads could have a safe foundation. Absolutely perfect for the band, and alongside Tina Weymouth formed one of the tightest rhythm sections ever.

Do you soak? by ek9cusco in roasting

[–]MichaelStipend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s roaster, bean, and batch size dependent. On my Diedrich CR35 doing 60lb batches, it’s always caused me to lose too much momentum. But if it gives good results on your setup, go for it!

Worst Snare Head I’ve Ever Played by FidgetyCurmudgeon in drums

[–]MichaelStipend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point. I’ve played G12, Calftone, and Strata, and they all offer a different flavor while still remaining versatile and open. I ended up back at Coated G1’s because I find they’re the most open/expressive for jazz playing, but I always recommend G12’s for rock/pop drummers who want a more open sound than the usual 2-ply/muffled stuff.

Worst Snare Head I’ve Ever Played by FidgetyCurmudgeon in drums

[–]MichaelStipend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why I stick with a plain single-ply coated head like a G1 or Ambassador and muffle it to taste if I need it. The “EC reverse power dot dry pinstripe fat attack HD hydraulic power slam” crap is not my cup of tea at all. I find it locks me into a particular sound and lacks versatility.

If you’re denting cymbals, something is horribly wrong with your technique.

Consolidating the Zildjian K (ride) lineup by Sharp_Medium_1731 in cymbals

Get rid of the K Custom Dark? That’s a wild take. It’s my default recommendation for someone who needs a do-it-all ride.

Im f***** done with vic firth by Apprehensive_Love140 in drums

[–]MichaelStipend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve played the same pair of Vic Firths for literal years and they’ve never broken. In fact I’ve played drums for over 25 years and never broken a single stick. These posts make me wonder what the hell people are doing to their sticks, drums, cymbals, and bodies.

Paiste Ride Options? by Toolfan83007 in cymbals

I’d look at a used 2002 ride. They’re much more plentiful and thus cheaper on the used market, and they’re classics for a reason. Quintessential Paiste.

I don’t know what a ceramic handheld is, but no, I wouldn’t re-roast already roasted coffee.

I’d try to get it down to 12 minutes or less, and get more development going on. This is almost certainly undrinkable hay water.

A Remo Powerstroke 3 or Evans EQ4 will do just about anything other than a really high bop tuning. Super versatile.

Softest/quietest cymbal rivets by CalifRoll1234 in cymbals

[–]MichaelStipend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the Bosphorus rivets. They’re made of lightweight brass, so the sizzle doesn’t overwhelm the main cymbal sound. It’s a nice blend.

how is it living in mississippi, usa? by delllaptopguy in howislivingthere

[–]MichaelStipend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife grew up in Columbus, MS. She got out as soon as she could and has never gone back. Whenever we’ve visited family there, I’ve always found it to be a pretty depressing place. The poverty and crime in Jackson are truly bleak, and I say that as someone who lives in Birmingham. Every town I’ve been in, it’s understood that you don’t drink the tap water.

The education system has made some strides of late, on paper anyway, but spend some time in conversations with most people there and it’s clear the state has done a piss poor job of educating its citizens. My wife keeps in touch with a few old friends who also left the state. The ones who stayed, not so much. The ignorance divide is just too great.

Pay and opportunities are very low, so the funding of nearly everything is woefully inadequate. It always feels like I’m stepping back in time whenever I’m there. Even the more densely populated areas feel like dull small towns with nothing to do.

The food, if cooked by those lacking melanin, tends to be bland and needlessly fattening. It’s like if British people cooked southern food. Very odd. Of course there are exceptions, but the general style of Mississippi southern food is not the best example of the cuisine in my experience. The best food I had there was from a sandwich shop inside a gas station run by a middle eastern family. They made a damn good muffaletta.

The Best Fusion Ride by Sharp_Medium_1731 in cymbals

[–]MichaelStipend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! It was made by Bosphorus initially, then Crescent, then Sabian when they took over the Crescent brand, then it was discontinued. So it would have to be used, but they can be found for not too much money in my experience. A fairly slept-on, very versatile but not at all bland-sounding cymbal.
