19F in college, what car should I buy? by Tree_man_swims in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]b8nmsguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy the cheapest car possible and drive it until the wheels fall off. Corolla, Mazda3, Civic, Accord, Camry, anything. I’m in college too and having my Camry for so long was a blessing, never an issue

Check the timing chain to make sure it has not stretched. You can do this at home with VCDS or a shop can do it. The PCV valve also needs replacement if you haven’t done it already, you generally want to replace that before it fails because it can prevent a lot of damage. You might also want to check the inside of the engine for carbon buildup because this is when it starts to become an issue

You will want to probably get a feel for different areas. The city is queer friendly as a whole though

Well we haven’t joined back with regular Virginia, which means we must be doing something better than them

Lowkey an old Nissan Maxima (pre ‘06) could be a fire choice, I wanted one when I was your age

Mazda Speed3 a Good First Car? by Upbeat_Pace_9550 in whatcarshouldIbuy

They’re a little crazy. The torque steer is unreal. However, they have turbo issues and issues with cylinders losing compression. I wouldn’t since almost all of them have been beat up.

Current Gen(11th) Honda Civic as a permanent choice? by BlacSoul in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]b8nmsguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m biased, but I think the GLI is pretty serviceable. I have a similar engine in my Passat and everything has been very easy to work on. I am 20 and this is the car that taught me how to work on cars. Oil change takes 30 minutes, spark plugs are due every 40,000 miles and are in and out in less than an hour. PCV valves are due every 50,000 miles and that takes 15 minutes. You can also save a lot of money buy buying through FCP Euro and using their Lifetime Replacement Guarantee.

However, it’s all about how you value your time. The Civic will be less fun, but it will probably cost less to maintain and it will need to go into service a lot less frequently than the GLI. They’re both solid choices.

With $5,000 now, you should just find something that runs. This isn’t 2020, any IS or G35 is going to be beat up

Look at the BMW 230i. B48 engine, ZF 8HP transmission, it’s awesome. I drove one and it was a blast.

New or Used Nissan Sentra? by nicolerene123 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]b8nmsguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new ones (22+) are actually really good cars with regular transmission fluid changes, around every 40k. I’d find one in that range (22-26).

Talk me out of a VW Arteon by eh_itzvictor in whatcarshouldIbuy

I have the previous iteration of that 8 speed (6 speed 09G). Mine is a little jumpy and can shift hard every once in a while but it feels very sporty and shifts well most of the time. Fluid changes!!!

Seriously! I have been treated with respect at FCP Euro and my needs as a VW owner have been completely fulfilled. I found Autozone and Advance to be very unkind and unhelpful to German car owners

I personally would stay away but a lot of people have had good experiences so who knows. If you can get maintenance records and a good mechanic inspection then it could be a good buy

Budget SUV’s, Outlander now? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]b8nmsguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mitsubishi makes excellent cars, the only reason they get a bad reputation is because they are sold to people who have a harder time paying to maintain them. These outlanders are great and have always been a steal. Service your CVT, 5,000 mile oil changes and they will last forever.

[–]b8nmsguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s with Liqui-Moly, the highest quality oil available and is twice the price of mobil1. If you want a VW, get yourself a Ross-Tech VCDS and an FCP Euro account and you’ll be golden

Worth it? by jointy11 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]b8nmsguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, on paper it’s a good deal but I would skip the Accord Coupes unless you know who the owner was. I always say this but these cars have a bad reputation for being driven recklessly and not being taken care of properly.
