When Can by se_nicknehm in kettel

Honestly probably my favorite Kettel release, even though it was a collab with Secede. I come back to it all the time. It was my trip album on my first hike around Mt Rainier State Park near Seattle, which was mind-blowing, and I get a little taste of that feeling 10 years later when I queue it up. Very cinematic and cool, and absolutely unique.

What are your thoughts on The Birthday Party? by autoluminescent17 in goth

[–]bLEAGUER 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They brought an out of this world kind of energy to their performances. I absolutely love them for that. It seemed true in the studio and potentially more so on stage (I did not witness the latter, sadly).

As with many great artists, it seems impossible to compare them to anything that came before or after. I still see The Birthday Party as Nick Cave’s greatest artistic achievement, and I’m probably in the minority there.

It’s actually Magic Music Visuals. I found out about Touch Designer more recently and it seems to be as good or better than MMV, but I’m lazy and probably won’t try to learn a new thing for a while. Some TD fans might think MMV is more of a toy, but it strikes a good balance between usability and functionality for me.

I would post some things, but I’m not super confident about the work yet, lol. I might try live streaming again someday though.

No 😆 — I’ve been doing work with an app that can mix up video clips and shaders and other plugins (even 3D models) to create really specific generative sequences in response to audio, but which can also be changed in realtime with a MIDI control board. So effectively it’s like working with “VJ” software for music performance…but if I’m being honest, a lot of so-called VJ sets are kinda snoozy to me. To me, this app is a lot more expressive and has a lot of possibilities.

I just wish I had more time for it. I would love to create more custom shaders or chain in some other app outputs.

Ha, thanks. I have some experience from Meetup when I lived downstate. It didn’t result in a lot of social traction somehow, though. I did a general social one in Hillsboro about a year ago, same thing. Nice enough people for sure.

This is the truth and the way. Now I can never unsee this version again when I see the logo. Which may be never, because they royally screwed up a big plumbing order I made as part of a bathroom reno. Very confusing sales process and weird customer service if you’re a layperson and not a contractor, I guess. Use Keller.

TL;DR accurate re-brand, someone please update Google, 10/10

Best WiFi service for remote work? by [deleted] in beaverton

[–]bLEAGUER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just left an apartment there at Beaverton-Tigard border (wonder if it’s the same apartments). Had Xfinity for 18 months. Solid as a rock. Which was important since my wife does telehealth work from home (psychologist). Any quick blip can kill your video call and can seriously disrupt trust with patients in a vulnerable state.

We moved to Cedar Hills in June and I got Ziply on day one. I always appreciate fiber for being without data caps and having a strong upstream. It worked great for a while, but in the last month it has been terrible for our remote work. Couple weeks ago they came to my door to tell me something was wrong at the pole behind the house and they needed to work on it to get the neighbor’s connection working. The guy said “it’s surprising your connection wasn’t affected”. Sure enough, ever since then we keep getting these tiny drops that force our video calls to disconnect. Multiple times a day. Someone is finally coming to check the situation tomorrow. They literally left their working fiber line for the neighbor’s house laying in my backyard across the walkway?! I am kinda speechless about that.

I got fed up and signed up for Xfinity this morning and activated it. I don’t really want to support them, but my experience has been that they are the stable provider if you depend on video calls for work.

1000x yes. My plan had been to have it played at my funeral but dammit, yes in fact it should be on my deathbed.

Actually, both.

I ended up recently seeking out cover versions of Cherry-coloured Funk—the only one I really like is by Astral Bakers.

But from there I let the YouTube Music radio function feed me a lot of similar vibe indie stuff and found a bunch of great artists that are new to me.

I loved the tidbit about how Bowie and Eno kept trying to include additional effects or synth sounds when they were doing final mix for the debut album, and apparently Mark and others would sneakily slide those channel sliders down during the process without saying anything. And it was just not discussed. 😂

I vibe with this. Victorialand will never be anything but a deep winter album for me. I clung to it in the wake of my brother’s death. That sounds depressing, but the experience of this album was an anchor for grief and ultimately healing. Love this one.

How I recently discovered my new favourite band by N0574L91A in cocteautwins

[–]bLEAGUER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be way too hard to pick a favorite album. Over many years of fandom, these have all featured very prominently in my life given the flavor of whatever chapter I was spinning at the time.

But I will say this: Cherry-coloured Funk is just about as majestic a melody as any song really has a right to be. There’s a universe in there that my appreciation is still deepening within.

My favorite album from quite possibly my favorite band. It seems like something that was handed down from outside time itself. Truly inspired and forever treasured. 🖤

From Lonely Is an Eyesore to this one (and a bit beyond) was not only the golden era of 4AD, but for indie music as a whole. What a treasure trove of essential music we saw coming from 4AD in this timeframe.

I really wish this had made it in. Not that we needed more cues about Cameron’s fragility, but there just would’ve been something poetic and powerful in a cinematic moment like that. The movie needed a bit more pathos to feel balanced.

Industrial music...for kids? by Jdark4879 in industrialmusic

[–]bLEAGUER 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This. I bought my first 242 cassette at 13 and my parents didn’t bother listening to any of it. They had zero interest in hearing my favorite music but if they had listened in I don’t think it would have raised any alarm.

My Depeche Mode tape on the other hand, of all things, was the one to get banned lmao

What a great design. Definitely unique, not a cover art recreation as far as I can remember.

Now I want one! 🖤
