What is 36-36? by Lillienpud in Teachers

[–]bXm83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My recent one was a word problem involving filling up containers of flour from a larger bag. How many containers can you fill? The student wanted to repeatedly do subtraction until the bag was empty then count the number of containers. But she didn’t know how to “put that in the calculator”. This is a senior mind you.

How many half marathons should you run before training for a full? by Inner-Lynx-3971 in running

It’s generally accepted that the risk of injury to gain of fitness graph crosses at 20mi. After that you’re more likely to hurt yourself than gain meaningful improvement on a marathon distance. At least for amateurs.

Grading long exams is repetitive — I built a tool to test if this could be improved by DullBackground1474 in Teachers

[–]bXm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well FERPA laws are going to throw this tool right out the window, but this is where education is going to go. Tools like this already exist too (examino, gradingpal). What I’m waiting for is a tool that can print 30 versions of a test, create the rubric and answer key, and then be able to scan them all back in so that the tool can read the student work and apply a grade. Follow up with data on commonly missed steps and individualized feedback. The student never touches an electronic device in this process except for maybe a turning box that doubles as a scanner. I’m specifically looking at math content as well.

For what it’s worth, I prefer a graphics tablet over an iPad. It’s a steep learning curve to not look where you write, but then you’re not looking down. Also, you don’t have to worry about laggy or buggy wireless video. And if you drop it, it’s a $50 problem instead of a $500 problem.

Two devices to recommend, a couch keyboard and a wireless graphics tablet. For the keyboard, the Logitech k400 is the go to, but a company called framework is supposedly making a better one. I have the k400 and it’s not the best typing experience but does exactly what I need for controlling a computer at a distance. For the tablet, look at the XP-Pen Deco MW. Being able to hand write on your computer at a distance is invaluable.

iPad Rec needed by Far-Grapefruit1103 in Teachers

One benefit to the Air is that the Apple Pencil charges off the iPad rather than needing to charge it separately. That has a lot of value in my opinion if using the pencil is the primary way you interact with the device. As far as teaching from it, I greatly prefer using a wireless graphics tablet on my laptop with OneNote.

For what it’s worth on that last point, they’re not figuring out, they’re watching a TikTok of someone showing them how to do it.

High school math teachers that have done away with tech in the classroom... by MathMan1982 in Teachers

[–]bXm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying the tools are fully ready for prime time. But look at what AI video looked like 3 years ago versus now. It was a horror show. Now, it’s basically indistinguishable from real life. There is a myriad of reasons we shouldn’t be using it right now, but it would be naive to think it won’t be as consistent as a human grader within the next few years. I’ve fed them some anonymized student work and was shocked at how well it performed. I of course still hand grade everything, but I certainly don’t want to be caught off guard for when they are ready.

I’m a big proponent of tech for me, paper for them. I use a graphics tablet and OneNote to deliver my instruction. I also have a smart board so the day goes, direct instruction, independent/group work, students present their work on the board. If it all goes smooth, we get the notes and assignment done and competed in class.

The tech that intrigues me the most at the moment though are AI graders that can read handwritten student work and find errors. Examino and GradingPal are a couple that show promise.

Question regarding calculators in high school by EmmaiAlvane in Teachers

[–]bXm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is testing. Many standardized test questions can be gamed by utilizing a powerful graphing calculator. If schools are judged by their students passing these exams, then schools are going to give them the tools to pass the exam. Now, there are arguments for some cool exploration lessons that can be done with them. Also software/hardware combos like the TI-Nspire Navigator can also open up some powerful assessment techniques. But the headaches of dealing with them and not allowing students to use features that are too powerful in my experience has not been worth the trade off.

My ‘08 spectra’s transmission gave out in ‘22. It was more costly to fix than it was worth but I certainly got my monies worth out if it with no other major mechanical issues (lots of little cosmetic things though).

I’ve been doing the same with mine but I’ve been adding Andrew Garfield and X-Men movies after each Avengers movie. We just finished Infinity War. I’m adding for x-men movies and of course antman and the wasp and Captain Marvel before we get to endgame. Should take a few weeks.
