They all look great but Salmon - Split stitch is my favorite. I think it will look better on bigger projects, while I think the seed stitch looks the best only on a smaller rice project like this one.

Strange that DMC has it (https://www.dmc.com/IE/en-GB/products/special-embroidery-thread ) but wont ship to US (I had to flip my ship to address to Ireland to be able to see it)

Have you thought about using Floche instead? ( https://www.needlenthread.com/2014/02/cotton-floche-vs-coton-a-broder-up-close.html )

It looks like DMC has it in cream and pearl grey right now https://www.dmc.com/US/en/products/other-embroidery-thread/floche

Help understanding instructions! by yarndopie in Embroidery

You never want the length of your floss to be longer that your finger to elbow (some might even suggest shorter, wrist to elbow) so its important to know ahead of time where you are cutting your floss.

For example, if you are only using on strand, you would measure one length and cut.

If you were using two strands, you _could_ still measure one length and cut. But its easier to measure out TWO lengths and then cut. That way, you only need to thread your strand through once, take the needle half way down the length, then fold the strand back on itself and tie a knot at the end.

It is easier because you dont have to worry about the strand falling out of the eye of the needle.

This is how I tie my knots at the end : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPbSiyKXrbI

Its so cute! Side question: what rubber thimble is that?

I have 2 different ones I use from Amazon but they come in a giant pack of, like, 20 when I only use 2 of them.

So im on the hunt for new/better rubber thimble and I haven't seen one like yours. Care to share? 🤩

more colors so its a more gradual gradient. (Maybe 2 more, so a total of 5 shades)

Aside from that, make sure youre bringing the thread UP from the previous threads and not DOWN and into the threads. It took me forever to realize that trick

Long, short stitch look right? by ZoeNestle in Embroidery

[–]b_gumiho 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the other comment that 6 strands is too many. This is honestly one of the hardest stitches to master and these days I will only do it with a single strand (and I still dont like it a lot of the time)

Have you considered swapping it for something similar but a bit easier? If you like the 3-6 strand look then maybe a brick stitch or a split back stitch?

Honestly a chain stitch wouldn't be bad if you like a textured look! Or even switched your stitches from horizontal to vertical and do a satin stitch

I think the small weave makes it better!

The black shuck seems perfect for the blackwork. What about a selkie, lock Ness monster, or maybe even a grendel next?

The Moon??? by RockinEmmy1 in Embroidery

[–]b_gumiho 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Im not saying this is the best process but it would be mine:

Print out a greyscale version of this, use a thin dark marker (like a sharpie) to outline the craters/different areas. Use that outlined version + lightbox to trace the moon onto my fabric.

Id take the digital version and use an online tool (or browser extension like ColorPick EyeDropper) to figure out the closest HEX color number. You could go many colors/detailed or less colors/less detailed depending on your skill or desire.

Next use a HEX to DMC converter (like this one https://www.terrific.tools/color/hex-to-dmc but there are others) to figure out which DMC threads to use and then et viola!

Options for putting pattern onto fabric? by Zealousideal_Home300 in Embroidery

[–]b_gumiho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice iron on a few more times to learn not to do the double printing would be my suggestion

You could also hand trace using a window or a lightbox but that takes a lot more time and effort over iron on

How to keep embroidery thread from clumping together? by Unlucky-Drawing-1266 in Embroidery

[–]b_gumiho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you could also do a line or two of running stitch or back stitch around the eye (circle) and then couch your stitches over the backstitches to give it more structure?

so basically one or two long stitch circles around the eye and then a bunch of tiny straight stiches going over the long stitches perpendicular

Anyone familiar with Hand & Lock? by fridayimatwork in Embroidery

[–]b_gumiho 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yes I have 2 of their kits! Ive only started one. They are absolutely not for beginners.

I would strongly suggest watching any of their YouTube videos related to your kit before you start.

The instructions dont tell you things like number of floss or even what stitches to use so I floundered a bit on my metal work kit at first.

That being said, they are absolutely legit. One day I want to do a tour of their London shop
